Help! I've locked myself out of my account. (Posting here from my wife's account on the same computer)
This computer is a Dell Precision 3420 with 16 GB RAM and 480 GiB nvme storage. The OS is Fatdog64 902 installed on the nvme using the method described in the Fatdog Help Frequently Asked Questions .7
"• 7. How to install Fatdog64 to a flash drive that works for both BIOS and UEFI machines "
There are two partitions, nvme0nip1 a 16GiB vfat partition labelled EFI and nvme0n1p2 a 953.0GiB ext4 partition labelled OS. The OS partition contains 29 files and directories but the most relevant would seem to be the three directories fd64save-jan, fd64save-ken, fdsave-liz together with directories Jan, Ken, Liz, initrd and the files vmlinuz, isolinux.bin, usb-boot-mbr.img and VERSION.
On booting the computer all proceeds normally until you get to

Loading base sfs from initrd : file /fd64.sfs
Loading savefile from local, ssearching for /fd64save.ext ...
Looking in nvme0n1p1 nvme0n1p2 sr0
Looking in nvme0n1p2 (OS)-->fd64save-liz
Looking in nvme0n1p2 (OS)-->fd64save-ken
Looking in nvme0n1p2 (OS)-->fd64save-jan

I would usually type 2 then Enter when the above line appears and would arrive at my desktop.typing 1 or 3 would bring up my daughter's or my wife's desktop. Unfortunately yesterday while trying to compile the text processing program Lout-3.43
something happened which changed the permissions on some vital files which first prevented me from being able to either re-boot or shut down. I got Permission denied messages (I cannot remember exactly) so I held down the power button until the
computer shut down. At this point I was hopping that a reboot might solve the problem but on restarting and typing 2 then Enter after seeing "Your choice [none] I got
Loading savefile from /dev/nvme0n1p2 on fd64save-ken and then the screen was filled with endless lines of
can''t run '/sbin/getty' : Permission denied
which could only be stopped by holding the power button until the computer shut down. My next thought was to delete and re-create fd64save-ken. I can still boot into either of the other two accounts so I booted into my wife's account and then deleted /mnt/home/fdsave-ken. After that I rebooted but at the "Your choice [none]" I just hit Enter and booted without a savefile. Using Quick Setup I selected the Australian locale and set the UTC option for the hardware clock and Australia, Sydney for the time
zone. After this I rebooted creating a new save directory /fdsave-ken in the process. Unfortunately attempting to boot into my account still produces "can't run '/sbin/getty' : permission denied
Can someone who knows Fatdog64 902 well please tell me where to look for my mistakes and how to fix them. I'm guessing that there are some files or directories somewhere without permission to pass through or run.

looks like you tried to name your new save the same as the old?
try naming it entirely different than anything you might have used before

Deleting the savefile and re-creating it usually fixes the problem, but it's odd that it doesn't.

Let's try this: boot without savefile, and check the disk (right-click on nvme0n1p2 and choose "check integrity"). Then delete fd64save-ken and re-create it again, and see if it works?

Carefully following James' advice has solved the problem. I still do not know what caused the problem in the first place nor why I was unsuccessful in my first attempt to re create my fdsave-ken but the e2fsck may have fixed something.
Anyway thanks to James for the solution and thanks to williwaw for responding to my cry
I will mark the thread solved when I remember how to do that.
