Completed Updates of phpBB, Extensions and Styles

Post by rockedge »

Finished installing the latest versions of the styles this forum offers which means manual code insertion and modification to add our Links and Puppy logo for eye candy. Also upgraded all the extensions that go along with the latest phpBB version.

If any anomalies appear please let us know what is happening :thumbup2:

Noticing one thing.

When I log into the forum and click on Quick links -> New Posts

A list of posts show, that have been made, since the last time I logged in.

If I re-click on new Posts.

It seems to only show posts I have not read.

In the past it would give me the same list again and maybe some new posts made during my log in time.
Very useful if checking to see if anyone added to a post I posted in.

@bigpup I noticed this also and I don't really like it this way either. :geek:

I'll look to see how much the code was altered concerning the search functions that generate the new post listings page and how the user_last_visit timestamp is being handled.

Maybe they tuned up the new posts query so it also uses the unread - read filter. We'll have to examine that.

Hi.

There still seems to be a problem with the list of newest posts.
I had a list of at least 15 newest posts.
I had read two of them and replied to both of the two.
Returned to the list of unread posts gave me only three.

It seems the problem is connected to the reply made.
I had 5 entries of new posts. Just made one reply in DE forum and returning to the list of newest posts returned just one new post. It was the post of the topic wherein in replied.

@RSH It is the changes to the search and filters in the new versions of phpBB to how the new post function is working.

I don't like it that much because it is confusing and annoying that the list changes so rapidly. The code changes were made to the entire search mechanisms in phpBB by the developers. Perhaps an alteration can be found that's easy enough and can survive the next phpBB update.

I am using Unread after the first time I use New posts.

Still looking at fixing the new format of YouTube "handle" URL's and the "@" special character. I think it's a mistake to use this symbol again in URL syntax.

What I have been doing is clicking on Quick Links ->New posts

A list of new posts is displayed under a browser tab..

If I want to look at one. I Right click on it and choose open link in new tab.
Go to this new tab to read and do anything in the topic.
When finished, close the tab.

Still have first tab, that is the complete list.
As long as I never directly click on a listed item, to open it in the first tab.
The list is always complete.

Note:
If the list on this first tab, shows at the bottom, there are more pages to it.
Click on the next page and the list is gone.
You may or may not see, what would be on the other page.
So right click on the page number and choose open in new tab.
That gives a tab with a list of what is on that page.
.

That is problematic. I am going to make some inquiries on the phpBB forum and report our experiences with the New Posts functions since the update.

a note from the phpBB team describing the New Posts search mechanism:

Returns a list of topics containing posts which have been made since the previous time you visited the board.

That is what it always did.

But now if you close the list it is gone and no way to get it back.

Click on new posts again, what I am getting, is what looks like any new posts, during the time I am logged in.

Before, if you have not logged off.

You could click on new posts and get the original list back, showing all posts new for this same log in. All new posts since the last log in.

This ability to access new posts, seems to be getting more not working.

I first logged in.

I just went directly to a topic, I wanted to read.
Read that topic and posted in it.

I did not log out.

Then went to Quick links ->New Posts
Only showed two topics and one was the topic I just posted in.
Seems to be only topics, that have been posted too, while I am logged in.

I know for sure there should be many more since my last login, one day ago.

@bigpup This is happening no fault of our own. What is happening is the entire search mechanisms and functions have been rewritten and upgraded during the last update. Lots of other boards complaining to the phpBB Dev's so perhaps they will change some things to make it work like it did.

They changed the variable that phpBB uses to store the last_login timestamp. So now by using a different value the behavior has changed.

The Dev's at phpBB recommend in the meanwhile to use Active topics or Unread Posts.

If I can get my Puppy Linux Noblepup64-FR to boot as a IBM mainframe computer using a mainframe OS from the era, I will be encouraged to look at the specific PHP code and see if I can switch the timestamp value variable back to using the previous version's schema

Been using Active topics to get around the annoyance, thanks.

Started using the active topics list.

It does bring up about 5 or 6 pages of them.

But if you look at the date posted info for the last post in the topic.

That tells you how new the posts in it are.

After the 1st page of listed topics.
This date gets older and older.
So the newest posts are going to be only on the 1st or 2nd page of the list.

So the newest posts are going to be only on the 1st or 2nd page of the list.

Depends on what you consider as "new". The Active topics list displays only active topics of the last 7 days. If you haven't visited the forum for 2 weeks then all posts will be new to you.
Fortunately it's possible to extend the list. The URL for the default 7-day list is is https://forum.puppylinux.com/search.php?search_id=active_topics.
If you need the list for the last 14 days you can edit the URL to https://forum.puppylinux.com/search.php?search_id=active_topics&st=14 . Also possible would be &st=1 for the topics posted to within the last 24 hours or &st=30 for those within the last month.

"Active topics" doesn't require to log into the forum. This means you can bookmark one of above URLs and check for new posts without logging in. I made "Active topics" my access page for the forum, not the index page, which I found too bloated. This is particularly convenient when accessing the forum via mobile phone.

Well, I am mainly looking for new posts a day old or less.

I have time to check the forum every day.

Mainly looking for topics I have tried to help with.
Anything new in them.

I use the New post search function a lot.

I have time to check the forum every day.

Mainly looking for topics I have tried to help with.
Anything new in them.

Same basic thing for me.

Plus looking for posts that don't belong or straight up spam
