Problem updating firefox esr .

Post by xenial »

Hi
I use firefox esr version as my preferred browser of choice and yesterday there was an internal update to esr version 78.0.4.I allowed the update but firefox would not restart and then would not open when i closed the browser.
I downloaded firefox from the mozilla site and i extracted into the opt folder and then i created a new script so i can use apulse.

If Xenialpup 7.5 is a frugal install.
I assume you had enough free space in the xenialpupsave to hold the update.
Had only Firefox running when you did the update.

Here is Firefox support about update problems
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/up ... n-updating

You may have just got a bad download of the update.
Downloading from the internet is not always 100% perfect.

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.
When I was a kid, I wanted to be older.
This is not what I expected :o

@xenial :-

What do you get when you fire it up from the terminal? Should give us some clue as to what's going on. It's either a bad download (as bigpup says) or summat's missing, or otherwise not right somewhere.

Have you installed, or uninstalled, anything else recently? Sometimes, if a package has overwritten certain dependencies, and you then remove it, those dependencies get removed from the system permanently.....although, with the frugal install it normally just reverts to its originals.

Hello mike and good evening.!
i get nothing via the terminal at all.
just a normal internal update, weird how firefox would not restart as there was nothing happening on the restart button.

all of how i created my firefox script is pictured above.Usually it is a case of update and restart but no restart even.
I had to download the new esr tarball and extract and more or less set firefox up again from scratch. :o

Uh-huh. O-kayyy...

Question (if I may?) Why do you start from 'firefox-bin'? Just curious, really, since most folks would start it from

Code: Select all

apulse /opt/firefox/firefox
....that's all. Sounds like you have it running now, since you say you've had to set it up again from scratch?

Were you getting the wee window saying you have to set-up a new profile? Mozilla have introduced that 'functionality' since 78esr took over from 68esr. Seems they don't want you to 'corrupt' your new browser by using an old profile; there is a 'work-around', apparently; something to do with the 'profiles.ini' file, I believe....?

Hi mike.
Yeah firefox is working fine now thanks.
i went for firefox-bin purely based upon research for creating the apulse script.
