Does anyone remember a multiboot cd/dvd?

Post by cretsiah »

ok im going back to somewhere between puppy 2 and puppy 4 series on the murga

i think it was in the 4 series, someone developed a multi-bootable cd/dvd package that did a similar thing as ventoy.

- you dumped your iso files in a folder
- then burned it to cd / dvd rather than usb

from memory it had sys.linux, grub, grub4dos as its boot up sequence ( i dont know how the magic happened )

im looking for this program to build a cd/dvd because i wish to use it on a non usb bootable laptop.

laptop Toshiba L30
- cd/dvd drive
- 864megs ram
- 1.6ghz celeron

im looking to make a multiboot cd/dvd with
- haikuOS 32
- Bodhi 32
- ReactOS
- Freedos
- puppy 4 - 4.x series

anyone have any ideas??

the SG2D sounds like an upgraded version and might not function due to needing the old mbr way of doing things

I seem to remember Lucid Pup also had this capability, and maybe even Bionic (even fossapup64_9.5?). If you have a puppy 4 series and you can boot it, it seems like you would be able to do it from there. If not, one of these others would probably do the job.

Is this it?

I've still got a few multi-iso DVDs knocking around, but haven't used them in years.

might be, thought they got it a little more automated than that though ( after reading the readme file )
dont remember having to do anything with the menu entries before burning disc

i know its been awhile and ive lost a lot of stuff, over the years

i know i had 2 discs floating around somewhere, off hand cant remember if they got damaged or not

1 was pre-built i think by the package creator from memory had about 6-7 puppies on it

2nd one was one i created, think it ended up with 10-15 iso's on it

i spose worst case scenario i could try removing hhd and putting it in an enclosure, providing its not an ide drive in the laptop

well i found 1 of them not sure which one though

for nostalgia purposes
listed puppies:
- Puppy 3.01 Retro
- FireHydrant 3.01 Retro
- Wolf Pup Linux 1.0 Retro
- Chihuahua 3.02 alpha Retro
- Puppy 2.14R 1.01
- Puppy 2.12
- Puppy 2.02 Opera ( Mean Pup )
- MemTest86+ 2.01

however i forgot i'd removed the hard drive so only
- Puppy 2.14R 1.01
- Puppy 2.12
are really usable with such low ram and no drive

found no 2
listed puppies ( menu entries )
- Puppy 3.01 Retro
- FireHydrant 3.01 Retro
- Wolf Pup Linux 1.0 Retro
- Chihuahua 3.02 alpha 6 Retro
- Puppy 2.14R 1.01
- Puppy 2.12
- Puppy 2.02 Opera ( Mean Pup )
- Puppy 1.09CE RAM ONLY
- Puppy 1.09CE save_file
- Memtest86+ 2.01
- Reboot
- Poweroff

I would think even then trying to actually do anything on the system would require a swap file somewhere.

Seems like in that scenario you should be running a tty setup with no desktop.

I have a single 1.6Ghz celeron Toshiba netbook, with 2GB of ram, and it's amazing what it can do. I run fossapup64_9.5, F96_CE4, KLV-airedale, and up-to-date browsers, Libre Office. It all works, and not even very slow, except for heavy websites. Of course it's a 64bit processor.

But if I only had 800MB of ram, I don't think the OS could run very well even without using a serious application. There's got to be some kind of port or slot on the motherboard for you to add a drive.

yeah i cant remember when pfix=noram came into affect think it was pups 3 and 4 series

however after addding a harddrive ( 240gig kingston ssd ) and making a 3.5gig swap
- using puppy 2.12 to format drive and adding linux swap partition
- puppy 3.01 Retro starts to work fine

by the way kinda funny seeing only ext2 and ext3 as main file formats  ( there were others but im not gonna list them all )

currently experimenting with drive layout
- cant see a way to change drive from GPT to MBR in the older gparted
- trying to add a /boot specific partition
this might allow me to drop the iso's i want for install if i cant figure it out any other way

if it works i'll make a new post about it

idea is to get
- haiku 32 ( ram 384mgs required ) ( the new beos )
- freedos ram??
- bodhi 32 ( ram 384mgs required )
- debian 12 with ice or jwm running on it

its only for experimental stuff so i dont screw up my main system
