If you go here:
https://www.seamonkey-project.org/

Download the latest version for Linux, which most likely is what is already setup to do by clicking download now. (This will be the 64bit version).

If you need a 32bit version or a specific language version.
Select Other Systems & Languages under the Download Now.

Select to download it to a location.

Example install:
Navigate to where you downloaded the file: seamonkey-2.53.18.2.en-US.linux-x86_64.tar.bz2 (I picked US version). Latest version at this time.
UN-compress it using some program for doing this. (I used PExtract or UExtract programs).
In the directory created from UN-compressing will be a directory seamonkey with all the files in it.
Place this seamonkey directory in /opt/

Menu Entries
To have menu entries for Seamonkey and the different programs in it.
Download and install this pet package
provided by dogcat

seamonkey-menu.pet
(3.43 KiB) Downloaded 134 times

After installing.
Some Puppy versions may require running:

Code: Select all

fixmenus

in a terminal to get menu entries to show up.

Note:
The menu entries are setup for Seamonkey directory to be located in /opt/

To do internal updates.
In this version of Seamonkey under Help is check for updates.
That should be how to now keep it updated.

Note2:
Some of the following posts will provide more info on using Seamonkey.
One has a script pet for making language changes.

@Jasper

Would your Seamonkey-2.53.18.2.en-GB PET be 32bit or 64bit version

I'm guessing 64bit as @bigpup says:

Navigate to where you downloaded the file: seamonkey-2.53.18.2.en-US.linux-x86_64.tar.bz2

Asking so I am sure

Thanks

The pet is 64bit.

You can download and install a 32bit version by doing it as stated in the first post.

The 32bit versions are located by clicking Other Systems & Languages under Download Now on the linked web site.

Thanks for offering pet packages!

However, this topic is more about how to get Seamonkey from their web site and install it in Puppy Linux.

Providing a pet package, is always going to require a constant building of a new pet package, with every release of a newer version.

Software pet packages really should have their own topic.
Which will provide a place to talk about how to use the pet package and discuss any problems, bugs, fixes, etc...... about the pet.

I am thinking about providing a seamonkey.desktop file pet, so it can have a menu entry.

Seamonkey Contains an Internet browser, email & newsgroup client with an included web feed reader, HTML editor, IRC chat and web development tools,
Also wonder if some way to make a .desktop file for these different programs in Seamonkey.
So these programs could be accessed by menu entries.
They are all available by starting Seamonkey and starting them from it's menu bar.

@bigpup :-

Unfortunately, with SeaMonkey, you're facing an uphill battle to try and start components individually. Research shows that while it's possible to fire it up showing E-mail, or Kompozer, because the whole suite is so tightly integrated together the browser will STILL be running in the background.....because it serves as the base upon which everything else is built.

This has always been the case with Thunderbird. It runs upon a modified instance of the Firefox code-base. Seamonkey is descended from the former Mozilla Application Suite ; apparently, "Seamonkey" was the original code-name for the project..... It boils down to this; it is impossible to start each component separately, because they're all tightly coded together into a single binary.

You're not the first to ask this..!

Mike. ;)

bigpup, I haven't used Seamonkey for a while. So I forgot that Mikewalsh published portables for both 32 and 64 bit Oses. viewtopic.php?t=1640

Downloaded, unpacked and ran the 64 bit. The extracted folder had Mike's usual LAUNCH and Add-Menu scripts; and automatically located web-cache, settings and addons within its folder. Used its internal mechanism to update to the latest version. I'm not sure that if one were building from scratch you wouldn't have to include the contents of Mike's included "extralibs" folder --mostly libpulse libraries-- for Seamonkey to render sound.

Hi bigpup,

Attached are the 5 desktop files, .xpm file and pixmap that I used in the 32-bit version I posted, they are borrowed from Barry Kauler's 64-bit Seamonkey version at http://distro.ibiblio.org/easyos/amd64/ ... kirkstone/

In 64-bit seamonkey they launch 5 different programs, in 32-bit they launch 4 different programs, (the 32-bit binary seems to be missing chatzilla).

The programs are Seamonkey web browser, Seamonkey mail and news, Seamonkey IRC chat client (chatzilla), Seamonkey Composer html editor and Seamonkey Addressbook.

Edit removed file attachment, see three posts below for new try

Have you gotten these to work with the latest Seamonkey version 2.53.18.2?

After placing them in /usr/share/applications and do fixmenus in a terminal.

There are menu entries for the different parts, but nothing happens when clicked on.

Didn't look at anything, just working off the pet I posted and where the changes I did came from.
I most likely have startup scripts somewhere that I missed, will get back in a bit after I figure it out.

Hi bigpup,

I missed some scripts and symlinks that should have been included with the desktop files, sorry for that and sorry about wasting your time. Including the whole package (I hope!) this time. This is tested on the latest 32-bit & 64-bit seamonkey.

This is set up according to your instructions about dragging the seamonkey directory to /opt/

Included a test pet and the whole set of files in case you want to rename the pet to something better.

Using the 64bit Seamonkey I am unable to get onto Facebook. Is this a common issue or just me?

It is Facebook and only wanting to support Google Chrome browser and maybe Firefox.

Most likely other web sites, that need people using those two browsers, will also have problems.

Google seems to have a control of the Internet and what is needed to see web sites.

Seamonkey is not a good choice to try and navigate within "The System"

I'm just playing with Seamonkey portable now. Good browser, but when wanting to use "mainstream" internet (google based) one has to use something that gives the appearance of an "authorized" browser, so I find that for accessing things like google, using Ungoogled Chromium or LibreWolf is a good choice. They have the up-to-date code necessary, and appear as Chrome or Firefox, while still allow for de-googled high security settings and addons.

Of course the best choice is to delete your facebook account, and X, and anything else that fingerprints and tracks your every move.

Basically I access google.com to file my hours on a google docs spreadsheet for an organization I work with, Everytime I log in, google sends my recovery email a notice that I've logged in on a "new device," so I take that as a good sign that Ungoogle Chromium is doing what I want it to do. Of course I have to delete the entire history everytime I close. I like LibreWolf because it does that everytime I close the browser automatically. But I switch between them for different tasks.

I tried an older version of Seamonkey 2.53.1, it did display Facebook correctly, and was able to log into Facebook.

So maybe a bug got into the latest release 2.53.18.2.

I went back that far in the version, because I kept finding info that it worked in Seamonkey, reported for older versions.

Love them updates.

Fix 10 and brake 3!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just to check and see what happens.

Did internal update of v2.53.1 to v2.53.18.2

That broke it for accessing Facebook.

Well, the internal update works OK. :thumbup2:

I added the pet download to the first post.

Seamonkey surely is an okay browser. I have it on all my Linux distro's and Windows. I do not use it that much though; only when something doesn't load as expected in other browsers.

Not about the browser being OK to use.

It is the constant changing, of what is required, for a browser to properly display a web page.

If a browser does not keep updated with these requirements.

That is the issue with it being useful.

Inspired by dogcat's Menu entries for Seamonkey, I've re-worked the way the portable version fires-up. See this post in the Seamonkey-portable thread:-

viewtopic.php?p=129086#p129086

Still only a single Menu entry.......but clicking it immediately gives you 'multi-launcher' to choose what you want to do with Seamonkey.

Mike. ;)

@AntonioPt
you need not create a package of each language. ;-)
a couple of years ago I wrote a little script.
This is detecting the seamonkey version, downloads the desired language package and installed the xpi file.

how to use
seamonkey must be installed of course
the .mozilla folder must exist in the home directory ( this happens automatically after 1st seamonkey start )
IMPORTANT
close seamonkey completely!

click menu start -> Desktop -> language pack installer
choose desired language click okay
xpi language file becomes downloaded atomatically to the Downloads folder
seamonkey launch automatically and ask for installation, click okay
close sm and launch sm again
click Edit -> Preferences -> Appearance -> choose installed language
restart sm

seamonkey-nls-0.3-noarch.pet
seamonkey xpi languagepack installer

May a dumb GUI user ask a question?
Will the SeaMonkey .pet package obliterate my old SeaMonkey 2.49.1 or will it simply upgrade what I have?
ie, websites, passwords etc in the manager and history.
Or do I use a piece of paper and pencil, write the websites and passwords all down first?

@TC-21-32 :-

Try the 'portable' version. This has been re-jigged recently to give a 'launch' GUI for accessing the individual components of Seamonkey separately. It's completely self-contained, and won't touch an existing installation. You can also add, or remove, a Menu entry from wherever you have it situated. (These work best from outside the 'save'; it keeps the bulk of the browser & profile out of it, and keeps it 'lean & mean'. Which is the whole idea of them).

For bookmarks, save your existing set-up as an HTML file somewhere safe. Then just import it into the new version.

You can find it here:-

https://forum.puppylinux.com/viewtopic.php?t=1640

Up to you, but it will allow the user to run more than one build of the same browser without either touching the other.

Mike. ;)

Thank you for that Mike.
I did try portable 2.53.18.2 in May. It upgraded seemlessly from 2.49.1.
I had to look to see which version I was using it was that good! True.
But the memory in task manager for SeaMonkey was just going crazy, wildly going way too high. It was wild to see! So I use old 2.49.1.
Maybe I should try a fresh download.

My latest notion had been since I store it in an ntfs file, that was the problem.
That came from the Brave portable thread when you suggested storing it in a Linux file system.
I'll stop since I've already highjacked the thread. Didn't care to do that.
I'll admit I'm not smart enough to save my bookmarks and password manager files as an HTML. Darn Secure Socket Layers (SSL) get me every time.

NoScript for Seamonkey (ツ)

https://noscript.net/getit/#deprecated- ... c-versions

Noscript version 5.1.9
Available at the link at the top of this page.

Works with latest 64-bit SeaMonkey version 2.53.19
This is working well with all the sites I have visited so far.

I have not tried it with the 32-bit Seamonkey, if you try the 32-bit let us know how it goes!

uBlock Origin is available as a Seamonkey Add-on also from the Seamonkey Add-ons page.
Another good Add-on is SeaTab X2 0.3.3 - it adds a close button to each browser tab and email tab (like Firefox has) is also available from the Seamonkey Add-ons page.
