RedHat developing a brand-new, Rust-based "nouveau" replacement for Nvidia GPUs...

Afternoon, gang.

Just came across this link over at Linux.org, and thought it might be of interest to any of you who are running fairly new Nvidia GPUs:-

https://www.gamingonlinux.com/2024/03/n ... announced/

It's still in the very early stages.....but the older, more complex "nouveau" in-kernel driver will be around for a long time yet. It's not going away anytime soon.

The Rust-based "Nova" driver will be leveraging something called the GSP co-processor, which is a feature of the RTX2000-series and above. This thing is linked to the GPU's main processor, which offloads stuff to it like initialization & scheduling, etc.....supposedly making life easier for the GPU proper, and allowing it to devote more of its resources to what it was built for, i.e., managing the display.

Just thought some of you might be interested in this development. Something to keep an eye on...

Mike. ;)
