Package update

When I try to update the software packages with Synaptic 35 packages are listed as upgradable but are then held back. Similarly with nala, 35 packages listed as upgradable but then when nala upgrade is invoked the message received is that all packages are up to date.

Could someone explain what the issue is please?

This is why.

You can manually override the hold on each package but if you do there is a chance you may break something.

Thank you for your explanation. I'll leave well alone. Maintenance of my "conventional" Linux installations led me to believe that updates are the way to go.
