NO video on twitter and instagram for me.

105 opera portable version works ok, but the rest...... DOESN'T WORK in fossapup96

Have a nice day.

hi

i only have bionic64.

i only d/l opera because
the online income tax service
i use doesn't like palemoon33.

i find opera way too sophisticated
for me, although i was a big fan
from version 3 until 13.

palemoon is fine for my needs.

cheers, mm

this seems odd:
i placed opera64 in /mnt/home.
used it for website not liking palemoon.
later, saw that it was no longer in /mnt/home.
found it in /.
i don't know if /lib64, symlinked to /lib
is relevant.
opera64 opens from /. i don't want to put it
back in /mnt/home until i have a better notion
of why it moved & if the /lib64 is involved.
i will try to turn off any automatic updates.
puzzled, mm

!!edit
when i opened opera64 from /.
i did not run it.
this time, when i tried to run it
it quickly slowed, put 4 or 5 lines
on the load display.
a right click on opera64 tab on taskbar
let me kill it. now palemoon, minimised
on another desktop had put 10 lines
on the load display, no idea why.
mainmenu>system>taskmanager
let me kill palemoon.
experience has taught me that the
compu will freeze, need hard shutdown
if i don't act quickly.

@mmmrr I am running Opera 108.0.5067.20 on a F96-CE_4 with a full real time kernel 6.1.67-re-rt20 #1 SMP PREEMPT_RT.

I have it stored on an ext4 formatted /mnt/home which is a symlink to /mnt/sdc1 on this machine.

So far it has not moved on this system from there. But most odd is that it did on your system so I wonder if it has to do with the /mnt/home symlink changing?

Sorry, guys! I guess I owe y'all an apology.....

I've fallen a wee bit behind with keeping Opera up-to-date. Blame Fred! His scripted updaters for most of the other portable browsers are that good - and SO reliable! - that I've become lazy. I haven't needed to update most of 'em, because the script allows the user to take care of their own updates.

Anyway; I've just uploaded the newest build of Opera (v108.0.5607.40).......and you can find it at the link in post #1 of the regular Opera-portable thread.

viewtopic.php?t=1448

Enjoy.

thanks mikew.
i deleted all obvious traces of
the problem opera.
properties of /lib64
feb 2019, 0 bytes.
it symlinks to /lib
15 march 2024, 232 MB

/lib contents look like system files,
hdparm for example. not opera files,
though the date puzzles me i'm not
losing sleep over it.

off to see if mega accepts palemoon
as downloader again..mm

edit 1:

mega still happy with palemoon
major good news.

d/l as zip file. md5 ok
opened zip, .tar.xz with Uexract
to logo/icon red O,' opera portable 64'

first thing i moved icon from ~/Downloads/op64
to /mnt/home. got a could not move notice.
deleted directory by move. moved op64-port-.tar.xz
to /mnt/home. the .tar.xz gave .tar.xz.extracted gave
'Opera-portable64' with icon of directory.
inside..useless fragments.

returned to O-icon in original directory in
~/.../op64. launched, ran, did minor tweaks.
closed it. retry move to /mnt/home. got..

Moving /root/Downloads/op64/Opera.zip.extracted/Opera/Opera-portable64.tar.xz.extracted/Opera-portable64 as /mnt/home/Opera-portable64

@mmmrr :-

Odd. Very odd. However...

You've not given any details on this, so I have to ask. Are you, by any chance, running your Puppy from a flash drive.......and is that flash drive formatted FAT32 (as it comes from the factory)?

FAT32 doesn't support sym-links, y'see. So; here's something you can try. These portables will quite happily run from a flash-drive; that being the case, are you in a position to format a second flash drive to something like ext3? Once formatted, you can move the entire portable onto that second flash drive, and run it from the 'LAUNCH' script...

Does that work for you? Just a thought, but it's worth a try. :) (You wouldn't be able to add a Menu entry - it relies on sym-links - but that's only for the user's convenience, anyway. These portables can be run either from a Menu entry OR direct from the 'LAUNCH' script. You have the choice.....which makes them more versatile! :D

nail on head, mikew!
my ommission.
a few years ago the hdrive
on a big imac i'd been given
quit. precisepup 571 had been
a perfect fit for several years
so i put pp571 on 32 or 64 gb usb.
kept on keeping on.

i bet i used fat32 for ease of
something i've never used.
if it's possible, would it be wise
create a ext2/3/4 partition on
the usb for opera?

i'm in another room on a different
computer so don't know how much
space bionic64 occupies on usb
thanks cheers..mm

edit 1
yep fat 32..5GiB bionic64..52GiB unused
says gparted.locked while running.
in another usb slot on a different usbstick
i could boot a copy of that bionic to modify original usb, while it was unmounted.
or some other puppy already on a usbstick?

edit 2
there are 3 usb ports, on the back.one port
for kboard/mouse, one for bionic/opera [if poss]
one for plugin for a 4 usb socket extension bar.
i guess opera would run from usb in extension bar?

no wiser voice has said bad idea
so i'll try shrinking the fat32 partition
to make room for a new ext3 partition
where opera will go. i've learned not
to do these tasks in the middle of a
sleepless night..3am hére..so later for
later. mm

@mmmrr :-

Um.....yes; that should work.

Under normal circumstances, with this setup you would need to start Opera direct from its launch script ON the ext3 partition. IF you're going to keep your Puppy on the FAT32 partition, you still won't be able to link any shortcut into Pup for starting Opera (due to the sym-link issue with FAT32).

However, we CAN cobble together a wee launcher script - and a .desktop entry for the Menu if ya want one - to point to Opera on the ext3 partition, and start it that way. We'll need to see a screenie from gParted - once you've set-up the ext3 partition - before we can write the launcher, though, so we get the $PATH correct. I recommend setting up portable browsers this way because it keeps the browser cache outside the 'save'; the cache on a browser has a nasty habit of ballooning exponentially if you're not careful, so it keeps this particular issue away from Puppy itself.

Obviously you can clear the cache regularly, but this way it's not so critical to watch it like a hawk. It gives you a bit of breathing-space... :D

The 'launcher' script can go in /root/my-applications/bin, and then the .desktop entry simply points to this. I do this sort of thing a LOT, so it shouldn't take much sorting-out. I'm very used to doing things this way!

Keep us posted, please. :)

thanks mikew
both for yr ok on scheme
and offer to custom fit.
i'd prefer to put the whole
os onto an ext format usb
but once this imac is happy
to boot an os i like i'm loath
to make any changes.

i've spent hours trying to get back
a setup i'm not sure how/why
it got lost. the firmware underneath
is slow motion apple , a bit opaque.
but lovely display, runs well & very quiet.
only 3 usb ports.!

will post . cheers, mm
ps i usuaĺly choose ext2
because it's always worked
for me. is there a compelling
reason to use ext3 for the opera
partition.?
i was thinking of possible
future tenants but how much space
would opera want under load?

opera64: opens; runs; gets tweaked; closes;
reopens; with tweaks saved. slow opening from
click on launch--4 seconds--seems sluggish.

i made a relative link to 'LAUNCH' in the first
window which opens when i click on sda5 .
first try worked --8 seconds to open opera.

i prefer one click on desktop for browser.
the palemoon is >menu>internet>palemoon
because i can't remember how to put a link
on the desktop. ... mm

With respect to your comment...

...slow opening from click on launch--4 seconds--seems sluggish.

Ya gotta realise, there is NO comparison between early Opera - up to and including Opera 12 - and the current incarnations. The old browser was renowned for being fast and lightweight. The current builds are all based on the Chromium code-base.....the open source builds on which Google Chrome itself is based.

Chromium is a heavy browser, though at least it does now have the benefit of almost 17 years of non-stop, continuous development....dating right back to the autumn of 2007. Though "heavy", it IS "stable" (and the Linux builds are far more so than their Windows counterparts).

The other difference between now and then, and the main reason browsers are ALL "heavy" compared to what they used to be, is that the web itself is a far more dangerous place than it once was. Consequently, a ton of safety & security stuff has been gradually added over the years to try and counteract all this.....and that all consumes space (and takes a lot more in the way of resources to run it).

Opera 12 dates from a time when the web was still a relatively innocent place, compared to what it's become....

(*shrug...*)

well thanks anyway,
i knew the opera story.
it can sleep in its kennel
'til another website declines
palemoon33 . the simplicity
of palemoon's interface is so
satisfying, time after time.

it was fun to do something with
gparted again. superb utility.
readily usable by novices.
thanks again, mr. mikew,
due to yr explanation i realised
that i could symlink inside ext3
partition. would ext3 be slower
than ext2? i had that notion.

cheers, mm

Thanks for sharing this version:

With my F96CE_XFCE_FUSILLI 4.4 I was working with version 105 portable, and updates never ever work with twitter, instagram or tiktok videos.

Nowadays with this last version, it woks perfectly and I can play videos on this sites.

Thanks a lot for your good work.
