How to install further software in BookwormPup? There's no apt.

Post by NorbertK »

Hello all,
i have built a little virtual machine under Virtualbox with the current Version of BookwormPup. I wanted an virtual machine to give the thing a different IP Address in another subnet for some tests.

I did a frugal install on a small virtualbox disk , got my x.org configuration sorted out and gave the box a fixed Ip address , bridged by virtualbox. Then I configured my pfsense with firefox

Nice, small and fast.

But would like to install further software with apt, but there is no apt.

There is a menu entry for synaptic, the usage of apt is described in the (very good, btw) documentation .

I am sure that i am missing some obvious step here, but I don't know what.

Can anyone give me a hint or two ?

Thanks for reading so far !

Norbert

:welcome: @NorbertK If you do from terminal e.g. :
apt update
apt install <somepackage>

Doesn't work ?

Yes, it gives

'command not fond' and this is correct.

Code: Select all

locate /apt

gives a bunch of directories but no 'apt' as such.

I resume I missed a crucial step in the installation, bu as I said, i am very new to puppy linux.

Menu/Setup contains an entry for synaptic which does nothing, no error, just nothing ...

Then probably something's wrong with your install, for me synaptic and apt work on BookwormPup64.

@NorbertK

APT is in the bdrv (sfs file) in the BW64 iso.

Is the bdrv in your virtualbox installation ?

I had the same problem with BookwormPup64_10.0.4. It wouldn't copy the bdrv sfs file to the installation. When I copied it over, the apt and synaptic showed up.
Better yet when I went to use version 10.0.5, it worked correctly and apt and synaptic showed up

This is merely an observation: Each release comes with its own set of resolutions and challenges.

Would it be good if all future releases are in their own thread within the forum's subtitle, for obvious reasons?

Just an observation for smoothing following topic discussions. As such those who discover problems when they are running with earlier versions of the same distro, their requests wont affect things associated with newest versions.

If it makes sense, we will see this going forward: Or if it makes sense present behavior is acceptable.

Thus this post needs no response. We members must insure we indicate the particular version of the distro we are using in the topics we raise.

I can confirm I was having this issue.

I installed Bookworm64 via the frugal installer and it didn't copy over the bdrv file and apt was not found. After manually copying it over to the frugal install and rebooting, apt is working.
