This is a modular, minimalized, FossaPup9.5 system (about one-third in size of the original release) but don't be fooled, it has almost all of the functionality of the original, full version. Most of the usual Puppy applications are included plus some smaller applications and there are some significant improvements. This is great for (especially) older machines, as a rescue system or for those that still like to keep things small and functional. I use it almost exclusively as my daily driver on my old desktop computer 2G Ram/CPU and it does everything I need. The included ydrv has the additional applications and the initrd.gz is a modified version to enable additional drives like a bdrv, cdrv., ddrv, etc.
NOTE: A browser is not included. I recommend mikewalsh's portable Chrome as browser here: https://mega.nz/folder/HDZElDQK#bbkJFR0QPA3q13JbEnAN6g.

Re: Fossapup-Fire
Thanks, Teeny-tiny and up and running exactly as packaged on my gen 2 i5 based Fujitsu S761 laptop, circa 2012. Smallest pup I've run in a while but lively and happy.
Nothing added wrt firmware as my wifi card is kernel supported in the stock kernel. SNS connection solid.
Dmesg pretty clean, the only fail is:
Code: Select all
root# dmesg | grep -i fail
[ 0.307726] acpi PNP0A08:00: _OSC failed (AE_NOT_FOUND); disabling ASPM
[ 0.789885] ata1.00: failed to get NCQ Send/Recv Log Emask 0x1
[ 0.790987] ata1.00: failed to get NCQ Send/Recv Log Emask 0x1
Clipboard working, lidsuspend working on this hardware -requires PB push to wake but that's ok-
All my portables run just fine, all current: Sylpheed, Brave, Slimjet, un-googled chromium. LibreOffice and MasterPDF Editor (older versions set up as portables) also run correctly.
Sound (youtubes checked) working in browsers OOTB, no other multimedia checks as yet.
Nice to see evince on board.
I don't usually like dark themes but the stock one works well enough.
Posting from Brave v1.62.156 now.
One question, which version of @ozsouth basic was this based on?
Here's to the 'master of pruning'
My pups: LxPupSc64 and Voidpup64 with LXDE ydrv and synaptics touchpad drivers, both using small savefiles for customizations. Ydrv based NoblePup64 and Fossapup64-small (both LXDE/PCManFM with no savefiles). No fdrvs throughout.

Here's to the 'master of pruning'
The one I downloaded at the time, I think it was the third or second last base version without the additional programs (it was very bare and not much of use at the time). I did a lot of corrections and additions after that (you can see on that thread some of my posts at the time). I don't know if he included some of that afterwards in his follow-up releases, didn't check. So this is basically what I ended up with myself and thought I would share it for those interested. ozsouth did the hard work with the initial pruning of philb's official release though...

Re: Fossapup-Fire
I did start a series I called micro & sent someone (not amethyst) v1 & v2, but decided by v3, at 159mb it wasn't very useful. It had
Ted, evince, calcoo, mhwaveedit, minixcal, mtpaint, gparted, pupmtp & gftp. Netsurf as adrv, updated 5.4 kernel & security files.
Polished products aren't my specialty, so @amethyst 's pup will be better.
Re: Fossapup-Fire
@Marv BTW - I've added extra JWM themes so you can change to a lighter theme. Select JWMDesk Manager from menu and then click JWM Theme and change. I've also added extra icons themes which you can also change.
Re: Fossapup-Fire
After running this a bit I wanted to change the JWM button scheme but discovered not all of them work for me. Attached a .pet with the original buttons and some others added. All works for me now. You can change the JWM button scheme as follows: JWMDesk Manager from menu > click Windows tab > Theme and Buttons (the second block) > select and change.

Re: Fossapup-Fire
@amethyst , Thanks for the JWM add-ons. I'll add the buttons to my working main SFS. All good on themes. All in all, continues to be a slick very small but quite usable JWM based pup. I see it as an ideal small USB stick install with one portable browser on board. Haven't gotten there yet...
I'm currently running Fire using a ydrv, basically @peebees' 13.8MB one for Fossapup-Less IIRC with a few look'n'feel changes and application default settings. Gives me LXDE and PCManFM for not too much added weight.
I've checked multimedia stuff a bit more and the included gnome-mplayer works fine on CDs and DVDs and just mplayer set as the audioplayer default seems fine also.
Thanks,
My pups: LxPupSc64 and Voidpup64 with LXDE ydrv and synaptics touchpad drivers, both using small savefiles for customizations. Ydrv based NoblePup64 and Fossapup64-small (both LXDE/PCManFM with no savefiles). No fdrvs throughout.
Re: Fossapup-Fire
Before I step away from this - I can't get pequalizer to work with this edition which is a pity since you won't have a system wide sound equalizer. However, Gnome-Mplayer is installed and you can use mplayer's builtin sound equalizer when using gnome-mplayer. One way of doing this is to invoke the equalizer in gnome-player's preferences like this: Run Gnome-Mplayer > Edit > Preferences > Under Mplayer tab add the necessary in the blank space under Extra Options for Mplayer. Example:
Code: Select all
-af equalizer=3:3:0:0:0:0:0:0:7:7
Note that there are 10 "sliders" from left to right separated by a colon. Values are from 0 to 10 and the first "slider" is highest bass value and the last highest treble (so the "sliders" are for bass to treble from left to right) . As you can see in this example I have 3 for my first two bass "sliders" and 7 for my last 2 treble "sliders" levels. Specifying the first two for the bass levels and the last 2 for treble are generally sufficient for me but you can of course play around with the values to find what works best for you.
More: So tried an equalizer when on the net. Downloaded and installed the addon called Equalizer for Chrome browser which does seem to work okay for me (tested with youtube). So that then covers it basically for a sound equalizer when using the internet too. Cool.
Re: Fossapup-Fire
@Jasper I've been using 'fire' off and on for a while now and continue to like its slimness. I have really only changed two things in it other than my own preferences -abiword out, geany & LXDE/PCManFM in- I added libdvdcss from the puppy-common64 repo so that all dvds would play and changed the permissions of the /usr/lib/cups folder so that the cups admin files etc. would be found and cups-devd etc. would run. chmod -R 755 /usr/lib/cups did the trick.
cupsd wasn't happy with the 777 permissions on that directory. Post change, printer setup of my Brother laser was normal. The key to that puzzle was here: viewtopic.php?p=91460#p91460
Cheers,

Re: Fossapup-Fire
New upload see first post. I've been using my previous version for the last week and made some new improvements (including things like modules for hardware acceleration which will be useful if your hardware support it, enabling zram swap, etc.). The zip file contains the base sfs, ydrv and modified initrd to enable more drives (bdrv, cdrv. ddrv, edrv, etc). Use a kernel which supports your hardware (aufs) and your choice of browser (I use Chromium).
Re: Fossapup-Fire
This distribution does not have pEqualizer installed (and I can't get it to work anyway) but you can access Alsa's equalizer instead (pEqualizer is just a frontend for Alsa's equalizer). Make sure you have the file .asoundrc present in /root (if you see a backup of that file .asoundrc.bak, delete the .bak extension) but if not, try the attached zip file, unzip and place the file in /root. To access and set the levels for the equalizer, run the following command in terminal:
Code: Select all
alsamixer -D equal
Note that once you have set the equalizer levels with the above command, it will affect the sound "system wide" ie. media you play with your media player as well as when on the internet (like playing youtube videos).

Re: Fossapup-Fire
I ripped glibc2.39 from Noblepup and tried it with this puplet. Totally experimental (use at own risk) and I just loaded it on top of the existing system for fun. May or may not be useful for something that needs newer glibc. Sharing it for what it's worth (6MB download): https://drive.google.com/file/d/1pmkZwl ... sp=sharing
Need to have preference to your running base sfs so load it as an adrv, bdrv (safest, so no installing). Note that this may break things. It did break my installation package of Abiword/Gnumeric but otherwise seems fine.

@Amethyst
would you mind give some explanation how to use the glibc2.39.sfs with your fossapup-fire.

Rename the downloaded file to adrv_fossapup64_9.5.sfs > place it in the folder with the other puppy files > reboot

Re: Fossapup-Fire
maybe I am missing something, I downloaded and extracted the file. Do I replace the files into the full version of Fossapup64?...
Re: Fossapup-Fire
NO. This is a distribution on its own but you need to add your choice of kernel (in other words a zdrv and its vmlinuz file), an fdrv (if needed) and your choice of browser.
Re: Fossapup-Fire
It is working very comfortably.
This post is also written in Fossapup-Fire
Japanese version is also available!
Thank you very much!
I hope you will be able to translate and read the article in Japanese!

Re: Fossapup-Fire
hi @amethyst, I tried your fossafire on my daily Intel Atom netbook with 2gb ram and GMA3600 graphic which been running Tahrpup606 (64bit) for some time.
I frugal install Fossafire by mounting the iso, and copied all files into a directory. I then edit my grub menu.lst and boot from this new Fossafire directory.
The initial boot process went smoothly, but eventually I will get a warning stating X run into problems, and I booted into a blank black screen without flashing input prompt.
When pfix-nox is use, I run xorgwizard manually, but all 3 options (vesa, modeset, fbdev) X failed to run. However, when select automatic video driver, I can get into a working desktop. Further inspection, the driver in use is gma500_gfx.
I do understand that my hardware is quite old for this kernel. But this remaster runs well on this netbook. Is there something i did wrong?
Re: Fossapup-Fire
@lizardidi It's setup to use the intel driver by default, I think. You did the right thing to run xorgwizard and eventually get to the desktop with the correct driver. So everything runs fine with the new selected driver? If you have saved your changes, then next bootup should use the correct driver. If not, I don't know. It uses one of ozsouth's kernels so if it's a kernel issue he may be able to help.
Re: Fossapup-Fire
I apologise for missing one important information:
This pup boots into pupmode 5, which disable save session.
In my boot code, I tried pmedia=ataflash / atahd / usbflash, all unable to force the system into pupmode 13. Hence the loaded video module unable to persist till next boot.
As for Ozsouth Fossa small, same issue on this netbook. But once successfully boot to desktop, both pups really make my netbook fly with smooth video and YouTube playback.

Re: Fossapup-Fire
Hello @lizardidi
Question
Would a manual session save address the save problem?
If so, you may need to use the "psave=...." at boot time for the PUP to find your session you've saved.
Curious

You are not saying if you have a save file already so I assume you don't have one yet. Change pmedia= to ataflash (if you are booting from HD) or usbflash if booting from flashdrive. In pumode 5 at shutdown, create your save file and then reboot. You can change the save interval in Event manager. Another option is to work without a save file and save your changes to an adrv whenever you need to. This can be achieved with the Save2SFS tool that you can find in my nicOS-Utility-Suite in the menu.

lizardidi wrote: Wed Dec 25, 2024 6:44 amI apologise for missing one important information:

The first time booting, it will run in pupmode 5, because there is no save to use.
If no save is used it continues to boot in pupmode 5.
You should be offered to make a save, when you do a normal shutdown.
Do you get offered to make a save, when you do a shutdown?
If yes.
You need to place it on the same partition the Fossapup-Fire install is located.
To run in pupmode 13 it has to boot using a save file/folder.
pmedia=ataflash or usbflash tells the boot process to have the OS run in pupmode 13. But does not affect pupmode until a save is loaded during the boot process.
pupmode 13 gives options for how the save is written to.
pupmode 12 it is automatically written to the save at all times.
pupmode 5 is not using a save, so it boots with nothing to store changes and everything is new.
.
.
The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.
When I was a kid, I wanted to be older.
This is not what I expected
Re: Fossapup-Fire
Thanks all for the responses!
@bigpup ,for every successful fresh boot into X, no shutdown was offered at shutdown. Checked the Puppy event manager, confirm it was Pupmode 5.
viewtopic.php?t=6598
Problems discussed in this post is very similar... but after applying the methods.. Unable to boot consistently.
@Clarity Thanks for this. Will test later. Maybe I try put a empty save file and check whether it will trigger the save session to occur.
Actually on this potato netbook I tried almost all official puppies from Precise to Bookwormpup. One weird behavior on this netbook which need Gma500 graphic driver, old pups can boot into X without problems. More modern pups (with newer kernels) often having a hard time booting into X. This include the official Fossa, F96, Vanilla, and Bookworms. Other distros such as Slax /Porteus also having this boot into blank screen issue. Two exception though, that is Tiny core current and Bookwormdog... Both with relatively modern 6 series kernel yet able to boot into desktop, with some tweaks of course. Something must have change during the building process of these distro's kernels that drop the support of this specific graphic driver... I think. Apologies for any mistakes for the technical terms.
Such small remaster variant is very useful for netbook with slow processors and limited memory. As I tested during the few successful boots, the video playback is smooth and all operations is very very snappy.. Once succeed, I will have a OS which I very familiar and comfortable to use, with modern kernel and glibc that make modern Web browser to run on such old hardware.
