Master PDF editor

The free version of Master PDF should be able to fill a pdf form.
It just does basic stuff and shows what the full program offers.
https://code-industry.net/free-pdf-editor/

Some are in deb packages.
They will install, but they may not make a menu entry in Puppy.
They do make a /usr/share/applications .desktop file, you can drag and drop to desktop, to click on, to run.

Hardest thing is figuring out which one to use for the Puppy version you are using.
May need some of the other dependency QT packages.

I got it working in Fossapup64 9.5 using the 64bit deb package for Ubuntu 16x - 20x.
Made a menu entry in menu->Utility

Free version is suppose to do this:
Create new PDF document from scanner or existing file(s)
Fill PDF forms
Add and/or edit bookmarks in PDF files
Comment and annotate PDF documents
Split and merge PDF documents

I do not really know how to use it.
So I can give little help.
I know! We do not need to read no stinking manual! :roll:

Fred also has an older, supposedly less restricted, version in his Debian Dog Stretch and Buster repos that should work with a lot of Puppies.

If you want to use Master pdf editor (which is a good choice) you really need the older 4.6.1 version (not one of the newer releases, since many functions do not function in the newer free version):

fredx181 added it to BusterDog repo sometime back:

https://doglinux.github.io/busterdog/amd64/
https://doglinux.github.io/busterdog/i386/

You do get an 'upgrade message' on startup, which you should just ignore.

LibreOffice can also be used to edit pdf, but personally I always use Masterpdf 4.6.1

Yeap, I'd come to that same conclusion. Best version is 4.xx. Version 5.xx is worthless in comparison.

+1

Sadly both MasterPDFeditor and Openshot have "upgrades" = worse.

The download may not run OOTB. See the discussion here regarding the dependencies which may have to be installed. viewtopic.php?p=7464#p7464

Here is a DOTPET of master-pdf-editor_4.3.61 for Bionic64. On one version of Bionic64 tested, I needed python-qt4_4.12.1+dfsg-2 installed from the PPM. With the second Bionic64, masterPDF started right away.

Probably could convert the PET into a masterPDF SFS version.

MasterPDFEditor-4.3.61-qt4_focal_amd64.sfs supplied with all the QT4 libraries need to work "out of the box"
Made in Fossapup64-9.0.5 but may work on Bionic64 as well.

Yes, I made a 'typo' above; I meant version 4.3.61 as others confirm.

Just as an additional note - that 4.3.61 version also seems to work fine using Qt5, at least in WDL_Arch64 where I use (needed) Arch packages sane, qt5-base and qt5-svg:

Code: Select all

pacman -Sy sane qt5-base qt5-svg

I have the tar.gz version of masterpdfeditor 4.3.61 untarred into /mnt/sda2/000portable_apps/master-pdf-editor-4 folder on my system; then I make a copy of its desktop file into /usr/share/applications, and modify that to point to where I stored it's files as follows:

Code: Select all

[Desktop Entry]
Name=Master PDF Editor 4
Comment=Edit PDF files
Exec=/mnt/sda2/000portable_apps/master-pdf-editor-4/masterpdfeditor4 %f
Path=/mnt/sda2/000portable_apps/master-pdf-editor-4
Terminal=false
Icon=/mnt/sda2/000portable_apps/master-pdf-editor-4/masterpdfeditor4.png
Type=Application
Categories=Office;Graphics;
MimeType=application/pdf;application/x-bzpdf;application/x-gzpdf;

Works thus fine with Qt5 for me (I don't have Qt4 libs installed on my system).

Having said the above, I do think a more fully portable (e.g. sfs) version that includes qt4 libs is way to go for the future since no guarantee it will work with future versions of Qt.

I have 2 question: Does the work (PET) presented by @bigpup have restrictions?

...older, supposedly less restricted...

If so what are they?

Is there some other reason I would not want to use the OP's PET in QT5? For example, is navigation bad or are new features not worthy or ...

Thanks in advace. Curious

Sorry, I can no longer provide the many occasions when newer than version 4.3.61 masterpdfeditor is restricted in functionality since after testing the pretty rubbish later versions long ago I didn't of course keep them. But it really is (not at all 'just supposedly'). Many of the menu items that work fine in 4.3.61 are not active in these newer versions such as bigpup posts about in first post of thread - you need paid version to activate the blocked out functions. Otherwise, stick with older 4.3.61, which remains very functional indeed (and remember that older 4.3.61 masterpdfeditor version will work with Qt5 libs instead of Qt4 libs, as I mention in my previous post).
