Be careful what you ask for. The purpose of an operating system is to run applications on your computer. The purpose of a Window Manager is to customize what is displayed easily. The smallest XFCE Puppy may not be able to run the applications you want, in particular web-browsers. The most commonly used XFCE-Puppy may not be the best Puppy for your computer.

I used to be an advocate of XFCE. I have not been for the last couple of years because Radky has developed enhancements to JWM making it the most easily mastered, feature-rich, light-weight Window Manager. It’s built into many Puppys, and can be installed into others, https://www.forum.puppylinux.com/viewto ... 274#p32274.

This thread may be of interest, https://oldforum.puppylinux.com/viewtop ... 7#p1003057. Note in particular zagreb999’s post 5 ½ years ago:
“The the best xfce is in debiandog or xenial dog” Emphasis supplied.
to which I would now add ‘or newer debian or Ubuntu dogs’ which you'll find here, https://www.forum.puppylinux.com/viewforum.php?f=22

XFCE OSes use XFCE as Window Manager and Thunar as File-Manager. To create an XFCE-Puppy requires that Woof be manually edited; or an existing JWM-Rox Puppy be remastered. Rox as file-manager is 'baked-in' to most Puppys as that's what the use of an un-modified woof will do. Thunar can be added to a Puppy, but it's hard-to-impossible to replace Rox as default file-manager for all it does. And Thunar as a file-manager requires more computing resources than XFE --note there's no 'C'. XFE is a light-weight, elegant, multi-pane, themeable --requires an additional pet-- file-manager that can be added to any Puppy via Puppy Package Manager. But its worth reading the various threads about it you'll find here, https://www.forum.puppylinux.com/viewforum.php?f=101. With XFE added, you have rox doing what it does automatically--such as manage the pinboard-- and XFE available for User-management of files.

That leaves the Windows component of XFCE to be considered. Radky's JWMDesk is far superior. The only advantage XFCE has is its option to use Whisker-Menus which in addition to displaying the names of the applications also displays the content of the contents of /usr/share/applications/xxx.desktop's comment argument providing a newbie with clues to its usage. AppFinder will do the same and can be installed into any Puppy via PPM; and once installed a launcher to it assigned to the Taskbar or Panel. See my post here, https://www.forum.puppylinux.com/viewto ... 513#p21513

Neither XFCE nor AppFinder by handles applications created for JWM-Rox properly by default. Most applications will be assigned to the 'Other Category' on the Menu: pretty useless. The pet attached to the above thread 'fixes' that issue. So, if even if you do go with an actual XFCE, you'll likely want to install it.

Despite the hurdles which have to be overcome to provide XFCE to a JWM-Rox Puppy, peebee has provided an xfce_ydrv which can be used. https://sourceforge.net/projects/lxpup/ ... /Desktops/. If necessary, ask how.

You’ll find other implementations, some specific to particular Puppys, on this thread, https://www.forum.puppylinux.com/viewto ... 707#p17707

Finally getting to the questions you actually asked: As far as I know the smallest XFCE Puppy which may be serviceable --support some mozilla Web-browsers-- is (Caro)lina-1.3 available here, http://www.smokey01.com/carolina/isos/.

I’m not sure what might be the most popular XFCE-Puppy. But if I were to insist upon using XFCE, I’d either follow zagreb999’s advice –choose a debiandog-- or as they are now available, one of the Kennel-Linuxes, https://www.forum.puppylinux.com/viewforum.php?f=192. Like ‘debiandogs’, Kennel-Linuxes are NOT created using Woof. Rather, each has a unique initrd that enables a user to run a major linux OS as a portable operating system. You have many to choose from. Several use XFCE. Ask which.

That was more asking about. If I were to ask for something, it would be like LxPupSC as a Upup & without LXQt, or more plainly the XFCE ydrv for Mainline Fossa: viewtopic.php?p=76396#p76396
