flatpak uses 7.1G

I was having difficulty getting my microphone to work in the OBS-Studio .pet from the quickpet in FossaPup64_9.5. I decided to give the flatpak a try and see if it would work.

Most of this 7.1G is /var/lib/flatpak/repo/objects 2.8G and /var/lib/flatpak/runtime 3.7G. I knew flatpak needed some storage, but didn't know that much!!

If you decide to do it, adding more flatpak apps isn't as painful. The OBS flatpak seems to be about 600mb. Personally I can't uninstall flatpak fast enough and avoid it like the plague in my Puppy OS's.

@trawglodyte :-

Jeez-us. Even I didn't realise Flatpak was that heavy. I know it's containerised, sand-boxed and isolated/insulated from the OS to the nth degree, but really.....that is just totally OTT.

Mind you, it just goes to show the pace of technological progress. Back 3 years, when I was upgrading the Pavilion to its max of 32GB DDR4, it was still reckoned an amount for enthusiasts. Fast-forward to today, and 16-32 GB is recommended by the tech blogs as an average amount for day-to-day usage. 64 GB is what the enthusiasts are looking to have now, and even some of those are already eyeing up 128 GB RAM with the newer DDR5.....

And to think our very first 'puter, a Dell laptop in 2001, came with a grand total of 128 MB.....and was running Win XP on that, with a tiny 20GB HDD. Anyhoo.....

.....back to OBS. Have you taken a look at the portable version of OBS I put together? See here:-

It's not bang-up-to-date - I think it's v21.6.0, or summat like that - but it runs fine for me in Fossapup64, based around an AppImage. Microphone detection works A-OK for me - I tend to make use of the Logitech c920 HD 'Pro's onboard stereo mikes - but if this is hardware-related, it might not work for you. It's a hell of a lot smaller, though, at a little over 100 MB.

Entirely up to you, of course, but if you DO decide to try it, let me know if it's any good, willya?

Mike. ;)

I tried your portable OBS before the flatpak Mike. Could not record sound with my audio interface. The problem may not be related to your version or the quickpet version.

What would help me track down the problem - Can you confirm that when other people use your OBS they can go to Settings>Audio>Destop Audio and it has their soundcard or several soundcards to choose from? The same for Settings>Audio>Mic/Auxiliary Audio? Generally, I select my cards here, or it says "default" but so far on Puppy they all say Disabled and there are no other options. I've used the Alsa Wizard and have recorded sound with SimpleScreenRecorder.

Hm. Audio is not my strong point; I freely admit, where this is involved I tend to build on the work of others.

What's the output of

Code: Select all

arecord -l

.....on your system (just out of curiosity)?

And, I'm curious; what exactly were you wanting to use OBS for? What d'you envisage doing with it? We may have an alternative that would do the same job...you would not BELIEVE some of the stuff Puppy members have put together for our favourite canine over the years.

Mike. ;)

@mikewalsh

Code: Select all

root# arecord -l
**** List of CAPTURE Hardware Devices ****
card 1: USB [AudioBox USB], device 0: USB Audio [USB Audio]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 2: C920 [HD Pro Webcam C920], device 0: USB Audio [USB Audio]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

I use OBS for a lot of things. I'm kind of visual, if I can see something I get it quicker. I send videos to friends a lot and sometimes use it to show a problem I'm having, etc.... Like, for example, I tried a cool app a guy made for Puppy "PuppyMint" that changes the desktop to a Linux Mint style desktop or a Windows style desktop and lets you customize the menu. I wanted to make a video trying it out. He asked for feedback and I thought seeing someone's first impression and attempt at using it might be helpful, and probably somewhat humorous as it took me a few tries and fails to figure it out.

Ah. Somebody else who's discovered the benefits of Logitech's c920. Good cam, wouldn't you say?

Um....."AudioBox" USB, huh? Wassat? Do you not HAVE an internal card.....or are you running one of these odd little NUCs? Or some other SBC..? Or is this an external sound card? (Questions, questions... :lol: )

I'm quite curious, now. Some hardware specs wouldn't come amiss at this point, so's we can get a better idea of what your set-up is...

Mike. :D

@mikewalsh

My beloved PreSonus AudioboxUSB has been with me a long time, but I may be retiring it. I used to use it for more serious recording multi-tracking, but these days I mostly just like the analog knobs on the front, and being able to do speakers or headphones and control both. Because internet content often is quiet or loud it's just nice to grab a real knob. It sends to a pair of AudioEngine speakers. But it also allows me to keep a real XLR microphone (or two) ready to record. I currently have a cheapie dynamic mic.

I do think the AudioboxUSB has some inherent problems though, it's never been quite right. Even in Windows with driver straight from PreSonus it is glitchy. Such as breaking out into nasty digital noise when I launch certain apps. I suspect it has something to do with 32-bit float vs 24-bit, or conflict between 48000 and 44100Mhz that newer interfaces automatically resolve.

On other Linux distros I started going down the rabbit-hole with .conf files and so forth. But then I realized if I started changing things I'd have to remember in case I get a different card that I want to do 32-bit float or 96000Mhz or something. And, uhhhh, Linux audio (despite basically working for most things out of the box, gets complicated fast if it doesn't)

If you're interested I have two videos up right now, the first uses the webcam mic, and the second is the AudioBoxUSB with my cheapie dynamic mic. I think you'll hear straight-away why I like the Audiobox. But the webcam mic is okay too. My audio doesn't have to be professional or anything.
