Desktop publishing for all : Scribus v1.6.0 in 'portable' format...

Post by mikewalsh »

Afternoon, gang.

Many thanks to @Jasper for putting me on to this current build. I've had a portable build of v1.5.2 for 3-4 years, but I never uploaded it, or even posted about it. So.....

Scribus v1.6.0 - 64-bit only

Scribus is a well-known, established app that's been around like, forever really. It's the Linux world's top-flight equivalent to MyCrudSoft's 'PowerPoint' (correction: 'Publisher'), although I think it's actually better in many respects. Desktop publishing is the name of the game, and that's what this does. I won't go into details about it; if you've used it before, or have used other 'DTP' apps, then you'll know all about its capabilities. Essentially, it'll deal with anything that would normally end up going into print (or published as an HTML web-document).

Suffice it to say it runs perfectly, since like Openshot, Python is bundled-in with it & it all functions as expected. Tested under my two oldest 64-bitzers, Tahrpup64 and jrb's lite spin on BK's Quirky64 'April' 7.0.1.....100% A-OK.

As always:-

  • Download
  • Unzip
  • Put the portable directory anywhere you like, though preferably outside the 'save'
  • Click to enter
  • Click on 'LAUNCH' to fire it up

The usual scripts will add a menu entry IF required. Available from the following link:-

Short tutorial found by Jasper:- https://explore.psl.eu/en/tools-and-tra ... troduction
Main wiki here:- https://wiki.scribus.net/canvas/Get_Sta ... th_Scribus

Hope it meets with your approval. Enjoy!

Mike. ;)

@Jasper :-

You can tell I'm having one of those days, can't ya? :lol: TWO mistakes.... (sheesh...)

Download link added to post #1 (that's where everybody looks for it). And yes; I meant to put M$ Publisher.....not Power-Point!

(I don't think the effects of that half-bottle of Jack Daniels have worn off just yet.....this is the only time of the year I even touch the stuff, so it has more effect on me!) :D

And "Ta" for the link to the tutorial. That'll come in handy for some, I've no doubt...

Link to main wiki & Jasper's link both added to post #1.

Mike. ;)

it's working very fine in xenialpup 64 7.5. There is only an issue wth fonts. It don't show the fonts added in /root/,fonts, even if I added this path to the font paths

@Dingo :-

Try putting them under /usr/share/fonts instead. It's more of a primary location for apps to search.

$HOME ("/root")/.fonts is far from being standard, AFAIK. In fact, a quick search of my own kennels shows not one Puppy has this directory OOTB. Did you add this yourself? If so, I'm curious as to why....

I symlinked /root/.fonts in /usr/share/fonts. Now fonts are seen. Yes, I added by myself the directory .fonts in /root. It is what I ever done since Puppy 3.01. I understand now that it is not a good practice.

Hey.

Why don't you just put an AppInfo.xml file into the directory.
Then rename LAUNCH to AppRun and you will have a Rox Application Directory (RoxApp).

It will then start just by clicking the directory.

By editing the AppInfo.xml file you can create a context-menu to access the other scripts via
right-click on the directory.

Bionic Puppy 64bit.
Won't use another one.

@Tippe :-

You can turn any of the portables into RoxApps simply by creating a sym-link called "AppRun" pointing to the 'LAUNCH' script.

However, I wasn't aware of the ability to create a rt-clk 'context' menu via this 'AppInfo.xml' file. Yeah, I know; it's 'old-hat' stuff where Puppy's concerned, because RoxApps are nothing like as common in Puppyland nowadays as they once were. At one point on the old Murga-Linux forum, you couldn't move for tripping over the things left, right & centre. Everybody was building them back then, since the RoxApp has always been ROX's 'native' portable format. Why create a new system when one already exists?

Thanks for the info. I shall have to look into this.

Thank you for sharing @mikewalsh. I will give it a try since I have experience using Adobe Indesign and QuarXpress for Windows.

Works in EasyOS. :thumbup2:
