Apparently they changed the default mode for save files in Fossapup64 9.5. I want it to be the PUPMODE 13 used for save files to only update every so often. How do I change the operating system to use PUPMODE 13? Can I do this to an existing save file? On my USB installation, basic.lst doesn't mention "PUPMODE 13" and there seems to be no file that lets me change the list of options in the startup menu.

You need to specify it in your bootloader configuration file. Booting with save file from internal hard drive make pmedia=ataflash, external drive make pmedia=usbflash. A save icon will appear on desktop. Time save intervals (zero for no automatic saves during session) can be specified in Puppy Event Manager from menu.

amethyst is correct; and you can use your current SaveFile. It will require a reboot for the Save Icon to appear on the Desktop. That's when you open Menu>System>Pup Event Manager and set the Save Interval to zero/0 or some specific interval. By "only update every so often" you probably want zero/0 which equals Never; so you only update manually. Make sure that the "Ask at Shutdown" box is checked: otherwise it doesn't Ask and automatically Saves.

Does that mean you are booting from a USB Key; or did you mention a USB Installation that only by way of reference? Where is your SaveFile: on USB-Key or internal hard-drive?

AFAIK, if your SaveFile is on a USB-Key the default setting is PUPMODE 13; if on a hard-drive PUPMODE 12.

What boot-manager are your using: grub4dos, grub2, something else? If grub4dos, look for a file named menu.lst on your boot-partition; if grub2, look for a file named grub.cfg. Both are text files. The 'pmedia=ataflash' or 'pmedia=usbflash' argument should be on a line beginning with "kernel" under grub4dos; with "linux" under grub.cfg. Add or edit as necessary.

I installed it to the USB drive and was booting there - it was the only way for the save file creation tool to recognize it.

How exactly did you do the install of Fossapup64 to the USB???

It may not be using the boot loader that is in the Fossapup64 ISO.

If Fossapup64 is installed on a USB stick and booting from it.
The save was located on this USB stick.

It should be running in pupmode13.

There should be a save icon on the desktop.

So, you are not seeing this?

What does it say about it in Pup-Sysinfo -> Sys-files -> PupState?

If you boot and see a boot menu with selections on how to boot.

DO NOT USE THE ONE THAT SAYS RAM ONLY.

That makes it boot, not use a save, and boot like it did the very first time.

It loads the save file but not in the wanted PUPMODE=13. I used Pen Drive Linux to install Puppy Linux and Fatdog64 to the USB flash drive.

"I used Pen Drive Linux to install Puppy Linux". Not every bootmanager knows how to manage the booting of Puppys. I don't know what Pen Drive does.

On first shut-down Puppy will ask where to create a SaveFile or SaveFolder. The default is the partition from which Puppy booted. But you can select a different partition if it's available. Encrypted partitions, those otherwise entirely under the control of a different operating system and those formatted using a format Puppy doesn't understand are not available. SaveFiles can only be located on Fat32 and ntfs formatted partitions. Either SaveFiles or SaveFolders can be located on partitions that at Linux formatted.
