Barry,
It is a Dell M4600, with an Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2640M CPU @ 2.80GHz.
If I run Fatdog's gcc (7.3.0) while in easyOS, that runs without error, as does Fossapup's gcc 9.4.0.
Ive also just tried the binary from the devx for Easy 5.0, but same result:
Code: Select all
# ./x86_64-poky-linux-gcc --version
Illegal instruction
I see. It seems that you installed gcc from the package manager?
If so, that is the wrong thing to do.
Do not install any gcc package, just install the devx sfs, it has the correct gcc and everything needed for compiling.
Getting rid of a installed gcc package may not be so simple, as aufs is annoying, leaves behind whiteout files that might block an sfs underneath. You probably need to roll back to pristine first bootup, then click on "sfs" icon to install the devx sfs, to the main desktop, then you are good to go.

I wasn't able to get the ShotCut appimage to work.
I will investigate Signal.
Awesome, thanks!
Shotcut'a appimage from the official website seems to be working fine for me.

Understood, so you won't do any magic from these instructions?
Code: Select all
Linux (Debian-based) Install Instructions
# NOTE: These instructions only work for 64 bit Debian-based
# Linux distributions such as Ubuntu, Mint etc.
# 1. Install our official public software signing key
wget -O- https://updates.signal.org/desktop/apt/keys.asc | gpg --dearmor > signal-desktop-keyring.gpg
cat signal-desktop-keyring.gpg | sudo tee -a /usr/share/keyrings/signal-desktop-keyring.gpg > /dev/null
# 2. Add our repository to your list of repositories
echo 'deb [arch=amd64 signed-by=/usr/share/keyrings/signal-desktop-keyring.gpg] https://updates.signal.org/desktop/apt xenial main' |\
sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list.d/signal-xenial.list
# 3. Update your package database and install signal
sudo apt update && sudo apt install signal-desktop
I've just installed the Steam gaming platform. It's been added to Fun cathegory, but won't run. Am I doing something wrong?
I guess there's no GOG for Linux yet :/
On the other hand there are games on GOG for Linux, so not sure.

Version 5.2 is out! Announcement:
https://bkhome.org/news/202303/easyos-k ... eased.html
I mentioned somewhere that my 50GB monthly data allowance got used up.
Vodafone drops me down to a slower speed for the rest of the month, which is about 150MB/sec, still not too bad. I was able to upload the 5.2 release, took a long time, all night, but got there.

Do you mean that I have to download Shotcut's Appimage on my own and just run it? I've found Shotcut in SFS store! What's better Appimage or SFS? Thaks
Difficult to say which is better.
An SFS can be run in a container, which probably is more secure, but then not all SFSs work in a container.
I don't recall the situation with ShotCut.
Anyway, try the OpenShot and KDenlive video editor AppImages in Easy 5.2.

Updated to 5.2 from 5.1
The update was seamless.
The difference file worked well and was only a small download.
The appimage installer is a great feature.
I like that now it is easy to install ungoogled chromium and update it.
In the past I have used Mike Walsh's portable ungoogled chromium on Easy. This works well but is configured to run as spot, which causes issues with sound on Easy.
Now with appimage it is easy to install, runs as user ungoogledchromium instead of spot, and has no issues with sounds.
And seems like it should be easy to update as well.
Thanks!!

Ah, currently cannot update Ungoogled Chromium. If you look at line 263 in /usr/local/appimage/appimage,
the download is hardcoded for a particular version.
I couldn't figure out how to obtain the latest .AppImage file in /usr/local/appimage/github-find-latest-ver
Apparently, there is a technique using json to query github.com and obtain the latest .AppImage, but I don't know how that is done. I've got that written down in the to-do list.
I'm somewhat hampered by knowing hardly anything about json.
EDIT:
Looking at that version "111.0.5563.65-1", the problem is in github-find-latest-ver
The script should be able to detect the version properly, needs to be hacked on a bit.

Regarding updating appimages, I looked around. It is a pretty common requirement that people want to know how to check if there is a later version on github. I found this:
https://github.com/dvershinin/lastversion
It is a python script, with rather a lot of dependencies, but it does work:
Code: Select all
# lastversion https://github.com/clickot/ungoogled-chromium-binaries
111.0.5563.111.1
That's very good. It can also download the latest .AppImage file.
Definitely a contender to be incorporated into the Installer.

Done a pristine install to internal SSD. All ok, apart from the devx, which is still giving reporting an 'illegal instruction' when gcc is called. Unfortunately there are no other error messages to go on. Bit of a weird one, this.

The option "--with-arch=nocona" means that it will work with the ancient nocona CPU, which is just about the earliest x86_64 CPU made by Intel.
Though only thing that I can think of is that your CPU has dropped support for a machine instruction in the nocona CPU -- but that is extremely unlikely.

BarryK has a note on his news site on removing mhwaveedit becaue it wasn't working. I've found gwaveedit, a port of it at https://github.com/wdlkmpx/gWaveEdit and it at least builds and run's on one of my older systems. I'll leave it to BarryK if he wants to try it on 5.2 as i'm working on something else at present. Last updated august 2022.
Also you could look at https://librearts.org/2022/08/audio-edi ... -audacity/ for alternatives, decent short expainations are given..
EDIT: and i've just been messaged that there was an update early march 2023 as 1.4.24_4, apparently available via freshports, i'll leave it up to someone interested to follow or not.

I tried an old version of mhwaveedit 1.4.21 on easy0S 5.2
and it also stalled when trying to record.
When I set it to 'Dummy' driver in preferences setting it wouldn't stall,
but of course no sound would be recorded.
When I set it to 'OSS' driver ,
mhwaveedit didn't know the device to record (according to warning message)

machine: lenovo optiplex 990 with nvidia gt1030 video card
Quick review of Easy OS 5.2.1
-used delta updater --> nice!
-Frugal install with a more recent version of shinobar's grub4dos went well
-Samba server - set up smooth with Chromebook
-Audio output - automatic
-Audio input - used pulse mixer to turn on front and rear microphones -there was no 'sound in' port listed??
These were the only inputs offered.
Set audio levels and launched gWaveEdit. It could record in stereo right away.
No need to worry about driver settings unlike mhwavedit which needed to be set for alsa!!
I noticed that in gWaveEdit preferences that pulse driver was chosen by default.
I didn't have to use ALSA at all.
-I checked out newest stable Blender package 3.5
https://www.blender.org/download/
Wacom tablet worked with it properly.
Live compositing works.
Subdivision modifier doesn't work because there is no acceleration.
-mtpaint worked with wacom tablet
-gimp crashes if I try to set it up for wacom tablet.
-pet apps and slack packages could be installed properly.
I was having installation problems with the previous version of Easy.

Just built a new external USB ssd with the 5.2.1 for my Asus all-in-one with a RYZEN 7 (amd5700U with radeon 1800 graphics) touchscreen and wireless keyboard/mouse, but it has two problems as show stoppers to start with.
1- it won't allow any keypress when booted to the initial menu, it just sits there until it times out and proceeds.
2- it always drops out and fails when xwin attempts to start. Even if I use xorgwizard and any of the selections (at least the mouse/keyboard is alive in the menu screen here) the alternatives all fail.
Any sugestions appreciated

Easy 5.x is still using the 5.15.x Linux kernel. I'm wondering if that could be a factor.
Toward the end of this year, or maybe early 2024, if WW3 hasn't started, I'm planning on buying a new laptop, so that will be good to test with Easy, and will probably then have to bump to a more recent kernel.
But I'm intending to stay with Intel CPUs. Hoping to get the 14th gen chips.

Fresh install of version 5.2.1 to USB.
I am unable to get the Appimage installer to work, both with/without the fix that was posted 28/03/23 (viewtopic.php?t=8248&start=30)
Neither the Install nor the Online Information work. I have tried both with a wired and a WiFi internet connection .
Any help on this?
Thanks

The kernel settings for this chipset have been included since 5.11 apparently and from what i can read in your config file yours has the settings corretly set.
I've managed to capture and keep xerrs.log and xorg.0.log, attached, either it looks like something is missing or one of your config files need work.

Re: Appi problem.
The problem seems to be, that /tmp/pup_event_backend/network_ does not reflect the network status but is an empty file.
I can overcome the problem by writing to the file, say 'wlan0' , but ANYTHING will do.
The Appimage Installer will then work.
However, 'fixing' /tmp/pup_event_backend/network_ in this way has also the unintended consequence of the tray network icon becoming 'fixed' too; the icon will not change when the network is disconnected.
Finding the 'fix' is a bit of an 'ahaa..' moment for me.
I have been running Easy_Buster since it's release and have noticed from the beginning, that the network tray icon was not working properly (it did not bother me too much).
I have just checked: Easy_Buster /tmp/pup_event_backend/network_ is an empty file too.
Fixing THAT problem, has to be by someone more knowledgeable. (I assume that it is not something that occurs on my system only)
Cheers
