corepup/tinycore and dcore use a simple sfs file symlinked into root for their extensions
so you could put everything you needed in a file and squash it up
and then put it in the tce/options folder to have it symlinked
however i have no knowledge of your application and what it would have to include

Corepup - mpv
Hi wanderer,
first let me thank your for sharing with us the project
i like the idea : minimalist modular system
i want to play with it for learning, so let say i want build a tiny pup with only mpv media player
for start what iso should i use ? corepup dpup buster stretch ? something else ?

i would start with the latest tinycore from the tinycore site
this is the smallest most modular base for your mpv
if it is too new for your hardware
you can try older ones until you find one that works
they might even have an mpv extension already made that you can download
take a look at it and play with it
im sure it can be used for what you want
its also a great learning experience because everything is broken out into pieces
and the tinycore people will help if needed

as it (and the concept of a minimal modular system) is of great interest to me
and it really never was an issue to me about others being involved
beside you guys have always given me tons of help and input

this is just an update on this project
essentially this project uses tiny core as a base to support puppy (and other distro) components
it is possible to modify tiny core beyond it normal parameters
but that is neither necessary nor desirable as it will break the support tiny core receives from its community
like puppy, tiny core is a well designed and actively supported project
it has an advantage over puppy in that all the components are isolated as extensions
and so are easy to add, subtract and modify
in addition it uses the symlink system rather than a layered filesystem so there is less over head
over time the puppy community has developed a wide variety of projects
that though not derived from the original puppy are puppy like in spirit
i hope this project can be considered one of these
thou certainly not of the technical sophistication provided by an actual developer
i encourage anyone who is interested in a minimal modular system to take a look at tiny core
it might give you some ideas or provide some useful components
i continue to play with corepup and to read the forum everyday
so if anyone wishes to contact me just post on this thread

this is just an update on this little project
and a notice that i am still alive and reading the forum everyday
what i do with corepup is just study the system
and try to build a system that i can use everyday
this is an interesting trade off since my hardware does not improve
but tinycore is constantly upgrading their system
to keep things orderly the modifications i make i have decided to restrict to either symlinked addons
or added boot options in the tc-config script
as always i encourage anyone with an interest in minimal modular systems
to take a look at tinycore
i think you will find it interesting and useful
as noted before i also follow the great work on this forum with the keenest interest

its a tinkertoy with endless permutations
i did note that on distrowatch there was a very positive mention of easyOS and puppy in one of their reviews of another operating system
kudos to all the geniuses in puppyland
as usual i encourage anyone interested in a minimal modular system to take a look at this system
i think you will find it very interesting
i would advise starting with the latest tinycore on the tinycore site
i would also as usual like to thank everyone who has worked on all these fantastic puppy like systems

I like this whole tiny core approach, but I'm looking at the install page and it seems like to install on the hard drive it wants to format. Do you have a more puppy-like frugal method?
I'm also kind of looking for a system I can build to run on the command line, and do SSH type stuff. This seems like it might work with the minimal x-desktop.
If you have a base core-pup system that you're sharing (perhaps it's at the top of this thread) I'd be interested in working with it.

I have boot stanzas somewhere to launch corepup from a frugal install
CorePup 6 I had going for a time to experiment with.

do not bother with the old corepup isos on the the first post as their modifications are trivial
it is best to start with the latest tinycore on the tinycore site
the tinycore info should tell you all you need to know
the entire base system runs in ram aside from the extensions
and the extensions can be added to the iso to make a full system that runs entirely in ram
it is very similar to puppy

Then this whole section serves no purpose and should be removed. It is certainly not incubating anything relevant to Puppy.
@rcrsn51 I am leaning towards the same conclusion. Then the Corepup project is depreciated and TinyCore is something different altogether so the Corepup section should be removed as an individual section.
Is there any information that needs to be saved as in moving this section into a topic in another like Projects?

i think it is important that there is information on the puppy forum
that shows that a puppylike system can be structured in different ways (ie symlinks and modules)
and that the various systems can be combined together
but i am not a developer and so this will never be an intensively developed project
so i dont have any issue with this thread being tucked away some where or deleted entirely
after all there is always the tinycore site to go to

Obviously, if it was me, I'd now move all non actual Puppy Linux distros into Other Distros since they are not Puppy.
But especially that Dog-incubator section which was just created (by me) as a holder for these what-are-really pure Tiny Core based projects - albeit with Puppy lookalike additions. However, gives you a dilemma since FatDog is only Puppy lookalike and DebianDogs not even so lookalike. Nevertheless, Dog-incubation should no longer be encouraged so are logically Other Distros section
But also, yes, deprecated - nothing being done on them for long long time now, and nothing probably likely to.
Fact is, the forum discussions can continue between members whether their non-Puppy project is featured in these discussions here or not.
Puppy may not grow or radically change, but that is up to Puppy and its woof-CE situation.
As for all these non-Puppy distros - maybe their dev teams can decide to collaborate and make a single forum of their own, if not separate to their absolutely own forums altogether? Then again, maybe not. It is difficult to see, looking at the forum first page, how they fit into the current structure aside from that little one-line exposure they each individually get - but hardly looks representative of their popularity overall.
Or maybe over time you could somehow work towards a multi-Mainpage - being one per major such distro, rather than a small section in Other distros which is itself a tiny section in Off-Topic; I don't know how easy or possible it is to arrange a phpBB forum such that each distro could have similar facilities as Puppy Linux main page, maybe with some sort of menu first page such that Puppy becomes just one of the main distro pages pointed to? Big job probably, so again, maybe not. And the non-inclusive domain name leaves a problem anyway.
So easiest is just to move Dog Incubator and otherwise stick with current status quo since no one now complaining about it anyway.

i have a suggestion
why not just rename this section OTHER PROJECTS
that is projects not directly related to the standard puppy system but still in the spirit of a puppylike distro
corepup and dcoredog certainly fit in this category
and others may want to put their projects here if the feel they dont fit in other categories
only a name change would be needed

I did try to use StickPup installer within Puppy before I read your message.
I will try again. Can I use the latest build of Rufus, or do I need to use an older build.
I must of read somewhere on the forum members recommending older builds, so just a bit unsure.

Hello again
I have tried the Stretch ISO which was not recognised by my PC as a bootable option (UEFI).
The TinyCore did boot up and presented me a screen of text mentioning minimal BASH instructions available.
Both were made using the current build of Rufus.
I was wondering was a Fossa/Focal ISO ever made? The reason I ask is that I can find current packages available to me.
Or should I not be concerned?

I think that might be the best solution!!
I want to be able to simply boot up with a basic display, no dedicated driver required. No sound needed. Just keyboard and mouse as inputs.
Be able to connect to the net via my wifi device (Intel).
Run an application NZBGet.
NZBGet absolutely needs the following libraries:
libstdc++ (usually part of compiler)
libxml2
And the following libraries are optional:
For curses-output-mode:
libcurses (usually part of commercial systems)
or (better)
libncurses
For encrypted connections (TLS/SSL):
GnuTLS
or
OpenSSL
The ability to compile (if not available) applications if needed.
Is that possible?

in my opinion your goal can be approached in 2 ways
1. you can try to take tinycore and build it piece by piece
adding each dependency until you have a minimal system
that will run NZBget
2. you can add NZBget to a version of puppy that you like
though building up tinycore
would be amusing and instructive
and would give you a very small iso
you might want the full range of tools
available in puppy out of the box
since puppy is quite small overall
and very good with memory usage
you may be able to run it on the system you are using
so yes it is possible
and probably an excellent learning experience
but i would start with puppy first
and then play with tinycore for fun
corepup is a modified iso of tinycore
and it is based on an old version
so i would not start with the corepup isos
