@geo_c What Vanilla Dpup version did you try to boot - is it 9.2.17? If not, maybe you should try it, because it includes the fix for boot from some USB hard drives.
Can you share the output of dmesg
and lsmod
from a Puppy that boots successfully so I can see what drivers are used? I can add missing drivers if needed.
(And 10.x is in early development, I wouldn't recommend it)

I used 9.2.8, so apparently I'm way behind the curve.
And I did notice 10.x said it was experimental.
I'll get to the dmesg and lsmod, but it won't be for another 24hours or so. Of course I'm not in a hurry if you're not.

No rush, especially if this problem is already fixed

And an addtional question, since I copied files from the iso onto my usb stick, I decided to leave the one called ucode.cpio. Should that one be there?
The file ucode.cpio is a microcode (updated) that mitigates some vulnerabilities in Intel CPU´s.
I also used to run without it, but later decided to add it. According to pupsysinfo, it has a possitive effect on my CPU.
I think the file must be loaded during boot (before initrd.gz).
I followed ozsouth´s tutorial (I boot with syslinux):
https://www.forum.puppylinux.com/viewto ... ode+update
Of course I used the file ucode.cpio from the vanilladpup´s iso.

I have tried using several of the latest versions of Vanilla Dpup
V9.2.8, v9.2.13, V9.2.14
Frugal install.
Installed on an external USB hard drive.
Usually identified as /dev/sdb
Using Grub4dos v1.9.3 boot loader to boot them.
All have the same problem booting......

Although reported elsewhere, this version, too, boots via its ISO file providing smooth desktop running, apps running as expected, and persistence operations as expected on pristine shutdown and discovery on reboots....without issues.
+1
P.S. I have noticed that this thread is marked "(solved)"

Yes, the original problem of this topic is solved.
Version 9.2.15 or newer has the fix.
