@BarryK rm -rf /root/my-documents works. (I should have said ALL other items are deletable). It becomes a 'character device' in the upper layer (see pic). I can post my standard (p-series) DOTconfig if it helps.

OK, thanks for testing.
I'm wondering if my problem is that the top rw layer is a /dev/zram
I suppose will need to try it as normal uncompressed.

@BarryK - I'm pretty sure the 'character device' is overlay's version of aufs' whiteouts. In the s15pup64's & recent Fossapup64's I made, this also 'always works'. Sorry, I can't explain the mechanism - that is the domain of the likes of @dimkr

@BarryK - I thought about overlayfs & containers. Does that need a special setup? My chromebook crostini container uses kernel 6.6.67 - overlayfs-only, so I thought I'd post the DOTconfig. Is much smaller than what I use, but may have useful settings info.
