Booted each USB on bare-metal. Same boot behaviors as seen booting them in a VM; namely SG2D launches to desktop, while Ventoy traps almost immediately after the KDE Menu

This is a pleasant enough experience to keep testing for a few days/weeks.

Is it ready to elevate this thread to its own KL subarea, similar to KLV-Airedale?

Results: Tests of booting KLV-KDE-CE from its ISO file to its desktop

Note: Booting KLV-KDE-CE from its ISO files eliminates issues of extractions and boot-menu changes which often can result in errors. The ISO file booting is trouble-free retaining all the properties expected in a Frugal use.

The Approach and Intent:

• Merely download the ISO file to the launch USB and boot it to desktop to be operational. No intermediate step(s) required.

• At boot for all tests, KLV's default boot Menu item taken without menu change.

The presentation is really impressive but I miss ALL goodies making Puppy user friendly:

- no easy remastering
- no way to use without to login
- it does not start on my PC after usual frugal install (kernel panik)
- the start from USB-card needs unusual very long time, to long! Installation on the disk is a MUST

this thread contains to much to big pictures to be user friendly (perhaps it is because my transformer DELL Laptop as a low screen resolution because of the touch screen?).

xbps seems to be exactly the opposite what it arguments to be: it is not simple!

if you want to install somewhat else, you need some helper like xdeb but xdeb is not included in the repository!

(with xdeb, it would perhaps be simple to install refractasnapshot from sourceforge / devuan and refractainstaller and to have the possibility to include perhaps easily all the new stuff in a new iso and install it efficiently! See please the works of our forum user EXTON at extix.se or exton.se ...)

Ah! Ok, thank you very much! Since months the thematic is very actual for me as I nurse a lot of months now my own version of Debian sid with the most great KDE - applications (see short list above). And, separately of that, I use daily a remastered version (actually of Triton 8.0 32-bits of our forum user «petihar» of the French division of the forum). As install KDE pure is very complex (and perhaps not really possible : the actual official KDE forum can not manage Konqueror , we have to do such concessions now!) I use xfce4 as base for the session persistence (in sid 32 bits and in sid 64 bits) as well as in that remastered Triton 32 bits! This works well and is (very) small and most easier . You can see in the following print screen of Triton the both trays : at the bottom the usual tray of Triton and at the top the tray of xfce4 (it is the same with the 2 hidden bars). The raw image of the remastered Triton with that xfce4 as only the size of 400 mB, it is a real Puppy what concerns the size but the KDE options are not any more included it it - they are only re-installable without toil.

In Debian SID, both, they are included but the images are very more heavy: between 3,7 and 4,4 GB of course .

Why?

Because I write often in other characters than ASCII . I write in Korean, and Tamil actually but did also write in Japanese and Chinese in the past. And I can store the settings of the keyboard for 4 layouts of the keyboard in the settings of XFCE4 (as well as, of course, in the KDE settings!). And it is VERY important for me .

As I can remember large parts of Russian (that I did learn 60 years ago ) but not write any more or of Greek (that I did learn at school) I know it is important for lots of people having have that humanistic form of education. It is not only a matter of seeing a beautiful screen (*1 but also of access to a form of dialog and inter comprehension...

(*1 In reallity I find the new screen backgrounds of KDE absolute ugly! And since LXQT we don't need KDE any more because of the use of QT!

So after a 22 hour drive through the heart of the USA, I am home and finally got to download and boot KLV-plasma, and it boots extremely fast, runs very fast, and opens applications very fast. And it pretty much feels like a mainstream windows/mac desktop, only FAST!

So that's nice.

I will be using it and getting a feel for KDE in the next few weeks.

@oui, as far as remastering goes. there are several methods with a Kennel Linux, one is to make a custom "plug-file" and replace the stock plug file. You can remove or add anything you want and build the rootfs from your own script.

Another is the Psuedo Full Install method. Unsquash the rootfs and rename the directory to 'upper_changes' and then create an empty dummy directory with the prefix 07, so something like '07Dummyrootfs.' Boot that and make any changes you want, uninstall, install, and then when you're done run @fredx181's backup script and it will make a copy of the 'upper_changes' which you can squash into a new rootfs. That's your remaster.

Or you could start with a more basic build, like a no_X first rib script and do the same thing, either a Psuedo Full Install or a custom plug file.

Remote desktop access

It is now possible to enable remote access to the desktop with one button directly from System Preferences. Once activated, the user can connect to the KDE Plasma desktop from another computer using RDP.

You have to understand, since Puppy first started it has spawned a whole host of other small lightweight OSs, for which Puppy was - to a greater or lesser degree - the inspiration. These other OSs are NOT Puppy, of course, but they operate under the same sort of principles.......and because of this, they will always have a home here, under the broad Puppy umbrella.

Try 'em out! You may find you actually LIKE some of them.....

The above comment about deforming Puppy is disgraceful nonsense and not of course welcome in this KL development thread. It also shows lack of knowledge of the history of union filesystems. I happened to start my UNIX-related life in 1990 on Sun microsystem workstations and layered filesystems were often used by that time. In fact Sun introduced and employed these concepts that Sofiya (?) is being accused of 'deforming'; Sun had used them several years prior to my own research group early experiences:

Sun Microsystems introduced the first implementation of a stacked, layered file system with copy-on-write, whiteouts (hiding files in lower layers from higher layers), etc. as the Translucent File Service in SunOS 3, circa 1986

I suspect Knoppix was the best known user of such techniques in more recent PC decades, but there were several small distros released using aufs or some earlier version of union filesystem. Puppy Linux was certainly a nice small distro implementation so maybe we should all thus now stop further distros using union filesystems. Ridiculous attitude really.
