It would maybe be convient that I owned that thread, but I think we should use the wikka for general information about pWidgets and the forum for discussions. Then it isn't that important who owns the thread. But, it would be handy if there was a link to the pWidgets page on the wikka in the first post.

Hi Guys

Slacko64 is really working well. I cannot seem to find the location of pets for this distro. I need one for the latest version of Calibre and Transmission. My book download site needs transmission 2.93 or later. I did download a binary from calibre website but issues.

Would appreciate any help.

It was compiled in Bionicpup64, but good chance it will work in Slacko64 7.0
says it needs the other pets also posted to work.

Calibre

You can get it from it's web site:
https://calibre-ebook.com/download_linux

Use the terminal command it says to use to download and install.
If the first command gives problems.
Read the info about why you may want to use the second command they give.

Very important:
You will need to have the Slacko64 7.0 devx_slacko64 _7.0.sfs loaded to provide needed files and programs for compiling.
Get it here:

Download the devx.sfs to /mnt/home location
Use sfs-load-on-the-fly program to load it.
May have to reboot to get it completely loaded.

It will not make a menu entry for calibre.
You can run it from terminal by typing calibre and pressing enter.
Can go to opt/calibre
Drag and drop the calibre file onto the desktop to make a desktop icon to click on.

I have created 3 half-Chinese language pets each for slacko 7.0 and slacko64 7.0:

(ibus cannot run in slacko 7.0 and slacko64 7.0)

scim Chinese input platform:

slacko64-7.0.0: scim64_1.4.14-en-zh-raring-14.0.6.pet (12 mb)

yong Chinese input platform:
slacko-7.0.0: yong3264_20201122-en-zh-raring-14.3.6.pet (8 mb)
slacko64-7.0.0: yong3264_20201122-en-zh-raring-14.0.6.pet (8 mb)

Plus 2 Chinese language pets each for slacko 7.0 and slacko64 7.0:

To use:
(a) any 1 of the 4 half-Chinese language pets will enable you to display and input Chinese in slacko 7.0 (use 14.3.6.pet) and slacko64 7.0 (use 14.0.6.pet)

(b) the name corresponding Chinese language pets will give you Simplified Chinese (use zhcn pet) or Traditional Chinese (us zhhk pet) menus, icon labels, tooltips for slacko 7.0 and slacko64 7.0. For the Chinese pets to work normally, you must install a suitable half-Chinese pet prior to install the Chinese pet.

64 bit version Burned to known good USB 3.0 via Live USB Maker, and tried a 2nd via Etcher.

Tried to boot on Dell M2400 laptop with 4gb memory. Boot screen flashes real fast and lands on a grub > screen. Looks like it couldn't find menu.lst. Tried ls command but it couldn't find anything. Tab key did list commands.

Boot problem finally solved at least with a workaround.

At the grub prompt after the failed boot type:

root=(hd0)/

then press enter, and then ESC key. On mine, the menu appeared and it was able to boot. I found this on another thread viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2057&start=10 on a post by Deanus.

Maybe someone knows how to build this in?

Just giving a brief report of the journey to replace my old system with the new Tuxedo laptop. AMD Ryzen 7 4800H and Nvidia 1650 TI

- Boot with usb-stick (fbdev) - no wifi, no touchpad, no brightness adjustment of screen, no backlight of laptop keyboard, no hdmi
- Upgrade to kernel 5.4.86 (from 4.19). Wifi ok, touchpad ok
- Disable noveau driver
- Install Nvidia driver. Hdmi ok, no laptop monitor
- Grub default boots Slacko 7 with nvidia to external monitor (normal startx)
- Extra Grub option with pfix=nox and execute an alternative startx with vesa driver for laptop monitor
- Appimages - Gimp, Inkscape, ... Make executable links in /usr/bin/ and *.desktiop files to integrate properly
- Turn of acpi boot service to allow turning off laptop monitor when using external monitor. Using boot parameter acpi=off resulting no wifi
- Select the correct sound card in the sound card wizard (sound was directed to hdmi)
- Install redshiftgui (PPM) to improve monitor brightness adjustment. Works only for external monitor

It has now become a really impressive system for my daily workload.

Issues to work with...
- Monitor uses correct resolution by 2560x1440, but refreshrate refuses to work with 75 Hz. Only 60 Hz is used.
- Adjusting laptop monitor brightness and the backlight of laptop keyboard doesn't work. Next kernel upgrade will be interesting.

These are minors... let's work!

I'm trying to test the slacko 7 on a pc and I get this:
warning:pae disabled. Use parameter forcepae to enable at your risk
This kernel requires the following features not present on the cpu: pae
Unable to boot - please use a kernel appropiate for your pc

on other occasions I could easily find where to put the forcepae order but in slacko 7 I can not find where that parameter is put, can anyone enlighten me?

pc is a pentium 4 with 512 ram memory.

Are you using the special No PAE kernel?

Specifically compiled in slacko 7 for 32 bit:

• 3.16.85(no pae)

• 4.4.249 - default

• 4.9.249

At boot time, on the Linux line ("vmlinux ..."), add

--forcepae

It will unlock the Intel firmware to expose PAE such that the PUPPY can utilize it.

otherwise, the kernel "no pae" I already saw but I do not know how to create an image by changing that one to that of the iso, if it is not very complicated you could indicate some tutorial to try, thanks again

For older systems that won't boot PAE kernels - new kernels have the forcepae option and adding

-- forcepae

to kernel line gets it to boot. (note there's a space after -- )

Also @ninjum you linux line should look like "pfix=fsck" not pfix-fsck

Hope these 2 comments help.

P.S. Once the linux line is typed complete with your changes, can you hit F10 to start boot? Just curious

and then click "b" buttom

There is a bug in the release version of '/usr/sbin/shutdownconfig' whereby dialogs providing options for optical drives and other dialogs providing selection of the save partition, are never shown.
The patched version of 'shutdownconfig' in the attached 'ydrv_slacko_7.0.sfs', should fix this.

Yes, I understand that a 'ydrv_slacko_7.0.sfs' is of questionable benefit to those who boot Puppy .sfs files from a CD/DVD.

Edit: perhaps I should explain that 'shutdownconfig' is the script that produces all those dialogs you see on first-shutdown.

Everything works except running Mike Walsh's portable Iron Browser requires libwayland-client and libwayland-cursor and probably other deps. Didn't try any further to get it working.

Anyway other than that a solid firstup effort.

Not in the least bit surprised, TBH, Darren. Slacko's, due to their origins (and the conservative nature of the parent distro) always have a 'barer cupboard' than the 'buntus. The Wayland stuff has been standard fare from, I think, around Tahrpup onwards...

The 64-bit versions of Iron-portable have this included. I never bothered including it with the 32-bit releases; until now, I've never heard of it being necessary. I can soon add the Wayland items into the next release if there's enough call for it.

(EDIT:- I know why, now I think of it. My own 32-bit Slackos run Iron-portable via a Xenialpup chroot.....in the same way I first introduced it from a Tahrpup chroot when you were playing around with the "Phoenix". Remember? Both of these include the Wayland libs by default.)

Oh, I'm still knocking about, same as you. You don't get on here as often as you did, and I have another "life" as a mod over at BleepingComputer. BTW; in case you weren't aware, I updated the Iron-portable chroot SFS package to use Xenialpup instead of Tahrpup. Some folks were starting to post about 'clone' requirements getting beyond Tahrpup's default stuff, so I figured a move to the next generation was probably appropriate....

Needs re-building again to include the newest Iron 88. That'll be a wee project for the coming days..!

Thanks for this explanation - I had been scratching my head to understand why shutdowns often seem to hang for a very long period of time, but this makes sense. I see it mostly when doing video conversion and my swap partition gets almost totally used up due to only 2Gb RAM in the machine. Would be nice to know how to bypass the swap cleanup - especially since at that point I have saved my video files elsewhere and dont care what happens to my RAM or swap contents.

Could try running this to clear out RAM before you shutdown.
cleanup memory

If you are running in pupmode 13 and have anything that needs to go into the save.
Do that save first using the save icon.

I had noticed, when trying out new versions of Puppy (with a frugal save file), such
long shutdowns that I suspected a Puppy bug !

But after a number of reboots and continued
testing, I couldn't find anything wrong.

Definitely different shutdown logic than in Slacko 5.7.0 !

It's supposed to be:

I just downloaded slacko64-7.0.iso three times on this computer running puppy, using a wired ethernet connection, and here's what I got:

is the md5sum of the iso, NOT the sha256sum ...

So please check it with:
