EasyOS Kirkstone-series version 5.5.5

Version 5.5.4, October 4, 2023
Forum feedback starts page 3:

Version 5.5.3, September 26, 2023
viewtopic.php?p=99724#p99724

Version 5.5.2, September 22, 2023
Decided to start a new thread. Given the fundamental changes in 5.5, probably should have started the new thread then.

There was 5.5.1, a hurried bugfix release, now more bugfixes and one major change; dropped NetworkManager in favour of updated Puppy network tools. See blog announcement:

https://bkhome.org/news/202309/easyos-k ... eased.html

Looking good!

I have 2 (two) problems on version 5.5.2 "fresh install": :(

1. Missing the 4 YouTube hosted channels on my Multi-TV Display.
2. Start_up Welcome_Alert is not working.

Best regards,
Reynaldo

Good morning,
Since version 5.5.1, it is no longer possible to download software with the flatpak program. There appears to be a time synchronization problem. In addition, the French translation is less complete. Youtube dl no longer downloads certain URLs, but this is not due to this new version. (this problem exists on older versions). easy 5.5.2 works fine otherwise.
Best regards,

Alfons sent me an email, updating from 5.5.1, SNS did not work, it popped up a window with:

"No wireless extensions detected"

He then tried Network wizard, and that worked.

Curious, because I tested SNS wifi, but only on a new install of 5.5.2, and it worked.

I also tested Flatpak, and it worked.

Yes, there is a time-sync problem for some users, I think if you have the hardware clock set to UTC.
That is a bug in flatpak itself.

Flapi detects that failure, and pops up a window asking you to sync your computer time from the Internet. That fixes it.

@LHESTIA
Did you not get that popup window?

Regarding youtube d/l. I updated 'youtube-dl' to the very latest version before building 5.5.2.

Regarding incomplete French translation, can you give a specific example?
If I have one example when a translation is not happening, that will greatly help tracking down the cause.

The latest youtube-dl is here:

https://github.com/ytdl-org/ytdl-nightly

That is the one in 5.5.2 (or should be).

I am not surprised if problems are experienced with youtube-dl, it currently has 3,838 open issues:

No problem with the update, using it now.

And, SNS works great.

I have sent a message to rerwin, asking if he knows anything about that error message.

Hello,

Just installed version 5.5.2 onto a USB flash drive as a frugal install and everything went without a hitch.

The new network manager works OOTB and it connects after every restart. (wired connection)

I'm able to download Firefox.

So far so good. :thumbup2:

Thanks Barry K. :thumbup2:

Update to test 5.5.2 ,all good .
But i shure dont get usr-merge simplicity !!?!
for chrome sfs ...as all my other sfs load .
Read all i could find , one said dont forget to put your ''addon install' in usr/local/opt ,was not about chrome and applied to ubuntu 16.04 subjet, but hey ! debian package does install it in opt , no go here ...i wont detailed all my efforts ,looking at how chromium is ''deploy'' in 5.5.? (flatpak too...what a huge pain...)to do the same in an sfs, niet ,non ,no bueno.
One thing i did not tried yet ,is move libs from /opt/google/chrome libs to usr/lib.
So until i resolve this sfs ,i can confirm Easy version control still work great !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great distro BK !!!

There is no problem with the /opt/google/chrome path. /opt is not part of the usr-merge changes.
Usually when an app is installed under /opt, you have to create a symlink to the executable from /usr/bin
Or add to the PATH variable.

Alfons has done some more testing and sent me an email:

have due to your test, SNS works great https://forum.puppylinux.com/viewtopic. ... 327#p99327 made another attempt with a new installation 5.5.2 and received the message, see foto01.
My laptop on which I have installed EasyOS is a MacBook Pro and on this I use the wireless driver wl broadcom-sta-wl-20201202-k5.15.120-20230710-kirkstone64.pet, with which the WLAN runs very stable - (Note on wl driver see https://wiki.debian.org/wl).
With SNS the wireless driver wl is no longer recognized. I have now loaded another b43.. in /usr/lib/firmware and with it it now works with SNS - see foto02, but the WLAN does not run as stable as with the wl-driver.

@rerwin or anyone else,
Any idea why Alfons would be getting that error message with the wl driver?
SNS has been in use in Puppy like forever, including Fossapup, this problem must have been encountered, discussed and fixed.

Here is the photo of the failure that Alfons sent:

I searched the forum, found a discussion about broadcom driver failing, which was due to missing firmware.

But in Alfons's case, Network Wizard works, as well as NetworkManager in Easy 5.5.1 (same kernel), so the problem is something else.

Looking at the capture 9504.png I see a few points to queery if I may?

I'll add these in no particular order>

Your Globe on the bottom line doesn't show any connection active so your not connected to anything? Maybe not even lo loopback.

You might have a look at /tmp/sns_wired_log so start with as your sns interface says it's a wired connection. And an screendump or attached copy if your not sure of it's contents please may help.

IP Info >Wireless . For me never shows anything other than what you show, so I wonder if it's actually used nowadays as I thought it related to the old radio network interfaces. I believe Canada was/ is the last country to still use them (in the polar regions).
(i'm now connected via a usb lead via a usb0 port and an old 4G mobile phone as i'm two houses from a 5G tower, no i'm not skiting, it's just where they put the tower. The old tower was 15+km away and often repeatedly dropped out. Barry would know these problems from old.)

IP Info > i'd like to know whats shown in the other tabs please, mine show >>
> INTERFACE >Hostname, external ip, lo settings (loop connection), what port (mine is usb0) details and address of the the Harware connected;
> DNS > the dns settings generated by dhcpcd;
> Routing > settings for the interfaces active;
> Statistics > Basic set of the Network stats for connected port.

Could I ask for screenshots or lists for these other screens plus a screenshot of the /tmp directory please in case something shows up as strange or missing.

To me, I'm wondering if your source device is actually connected through to your system or is it locked out for some reason.

Thank you for your answers.
Rox-filer is not translated into French. Regarding flatpak, I saw the pop-up window but whatever the position of the hardware clock the problem seems to persist. With earlier versions, flatpak worked correctly. (I am currently working with 5.4.9).
Best regards.

in 5.5.2 writing from chrome latest ,finaly .
Made a pet of my sfs , loaded ,said :no entry menu ,
It still had a easy .control from dunfell sfs + menu/gnome center + an xml ,removed those,
abracadabra menu entry is there .
Hours of reading ,looking & messing arround ,laughable !!!
Else ,why i have to ''rebuild'' right-click choices i had i miss so much?.
if i pinpoint that one ,i'll share it .
sns look a bit slower but work ! edit :on first 5.5.2, rebooting it look faster.
Should i state ,all that from upgrading to 5.5.2 ,no fresh install.
edit: chrome pet work ,sfs still have usr-merge warning !?! ok , still do not get it ,but pet seem fine !!!
so a working 134mb pet(yes, compacted as pet) compare to a 1.8Gb flatpak ,i do not get the interest ,no war here ,or a smaller ,short one .
re edit:Does it worth it ?
as i did not even tried simply installing gg-chrome-stable debian !!!
But you could look into that pet of latest 117 if you wish .

@ BarryK
@ bugnaw333

Having updated one one of my copies of 5.4.10 to 5.5.2 I also found that none of the
4 YouTube hosted channels functioned. With the exception of France24, they continue to
work in 5.4.10 and a variety of other Pups plus Cinnamon versions of Manjaro + Ubuntu 22.04.

The France24 channel has a dual reason for failure as they changed to a new YT stream on 19/09/23.
Having corrected that on my copy, the 4 channels still failed only on 5.5.2 due to an
SSL certificate failure which I have never observed before. This issue is therefore
unique to 5.5.2 and the same for all YouTube hosted channels. I will need to issue a new
version of the Global TV Panel to accommodate the new France24 stream.
The error in each case regardless of youtube-dl version is as follows: (Hope it throws some light on the problem)

Code: Select all

# sh ./cna_news
# [ytdl_hook] ERROR: Unable to download API page: <urlopen error [SSL: CERTIFICATE_VERIFY_FAILED]
certificate verify failed: unable to get local issuer certificate (_ssl.c:1007)>
(caused by URLError(SSLCertVerificationError(1, '[SSL: CERTIFICATE_VERIFY_FAILED]
certificate verify failed: unable to get local issuer certificate (_ssl.c:1007)')))
[ytdl_hook] youtube-dl failed: unexpected error occurred
Failed to recognize file format.

Exiting... (Errors when loading file)

@bugnaw33

Regarding "2. Start_up Welcome_Alert is not working."
That optional pet can be found here:
https://forum.puppylinux.com/viewtopic.php?t=8218

In the case of 5.5.2 and the reversion to SNS the default sleep of 18 seconds at the start of the /root/noob/startup_welcome_alarm.sh
needs to be increased as SNS takes longer to establish a working connection than the previous network manager.

I suggest that you start by changing it to 25 seconds (more if need be). On a fast external nvme I found that my normal 13 seconds
had to be increased to 21 seconds in order to get correct operation. Ideally it should trigger 2/3 seconds after the first 2 popup messges.

I am wondering if /etc/ssl/certs is fully populated after you updated to 5.5.2

Does it have lots of symlinks?

Also, does folder /mnt/wkg/.session/etc/ssl/certs exist?
If so, delete it and reboot immediately without saving the session.

...that may have whiteouts that are blocking /etc/ssl/certs in easy.sfs

Alfons's problem with wifi gets curiouser and curiouser...

There is a photo above showing SNS does not recognise the wifi interface, even though 'wl' driver is loaded and Network Wizard works.

I have been communicating with him by email, and he confirms that /sys/class/net/wlan0 exists,
and /sys/class/net/wlan0/device/driver is a link to "wl" driver.

So wifi is OK, but when he runs SNS from a terminal:

...I had a quick look at the code, puzzled why that failure. @rerwin what do you think?

Do you mean that you plugged in a usb wifi adaptor?

Before adding any extra wifi adaptor, and sns shows nothing detected, would you kindly check a couple of things:

Code: Select all

# ls -1 /sys/class/net

...does it list wlan0?

If so, do this:

Code: Select all

# readlink /sys/class/net/wlan0/device/driver

...that will show you the name of the kernel driver that is using wlan0 interface.

Check that the driver provides a description field:

Code: Select all

# modinfo <insert driver name> | grep '^description:'

Finally, start sns from the terminal, see if it outputs any error message;

Code: Select all

# sns

Fixed!!!

Alfons is using the broadcom-sta-wl kernel driver, named 'wl.ko'. I compile that everytime I do a kernel upgrade; however, as it is compiled separately, it is not signed. There is a method for signing a separatly-compiled module, but I never followed that one up.
So, when the 'wl' module loads, the kernel treats it as "tainted", and if you run 'dmesg' in a terminal you will see lots of error messages about being tainted.

However, the module does load and works. The problem is that the 'modinfo' utility, that returns information about a module, will just return an error message if run "modinfo wl".

The 'sns' script runs modinfo to obtain a description of the module, gets nothing back; end result sns fails to find the wl driver.

I have fixed sns, see attached, with false ".gz". Rename to just "sns", right click, choose "Properties..." then tick the three exec checkboxes. Then copy it to /usr/local/simple_network_setup/, replacing the original.

@nnriyer , I think this might work for you to.

I have let rerwin know about the fix.

Hi Barry,
1. It contains 255 items.

2. All 255 items are symlinks dated 21/09/23 but I noted that their target /usr/share/ca-certificates/mozilla/
only contains 127 files.

3. Yes, I deleted that folder but same error persisted with the 4 YouTube channels

I doubt whether the fact that I updated from 5.4.10 to 5.5.2 is an issue as in his post
@bugnaw333 stated that he did a fresh install of 5.5.2 and found that the 4 channels were not working.

Re: EasyOS Kirkstone-series version 5.5.2

I downloaded the latest ca-certificates from Debian Testing, ran 'update-ca-certificates', got the latest 'youtube-dl' from the nightly builds site. Tested:

Code: Select all

# youtube-dl https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2jf2W2CPtiA
[youtube] 2jf2W2CPtiA: Downloading webpage
WARNING: Unable to download webpage: <urlopen error [SSL: CERTIFICATE_VERIFY_FAILED] certificate verify failed: unable to get local issuer certificate (_ssl.c:1007)>

ERROR: Unable to download API page: <urlopen error [SSL: CERTIFICATE_VERIFY_FAILED] certificate verify failed: unable to get local issuer certificate (_ssl.c:1007)> (caused by URLError(SSLCertVerificationError(1, '[SSL: CERTIFICATE_VERIFY_FAILED] certificate verify failed: unable to get local issuer certificate (_ssl.c:1007)')))
#

I then downloaded 'yt-dlp', from here:

https://github.com/yt-dlp/yt-dlp/releas ... 2023.09.24

tested:

Code: Select all

# ./yt-dlp https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2jf2W2CPtiA

Success!

So, I am wondering, does yt-dlp have the same commandline params?

@ETP , can you detect yt-dlp and use it instead if it is installed?

I can do the same thing for the youtubedl-gui.

Rox-filer is not translated into French.

In EasyOS 5.4.10 Messages in /usr/local/apps/ROX-Filer is a symlic to !o /usr/share/locale. In 5.5.2 it's a real folder.

In 5.5.2 i have replaced this folder by the symlink, I have too replaced ROX-Filer.mo in /usr/share/locale/fr/LC_MESSAGES by the ROX-Filer.mo of 5.4.10 (in terminal, by precaution ROX-Filer was closed)
And then the menus are translated.

I don't know if the modification of Messages has broken something. And curiously the "(All)" displayed in the title of a window when the hidden files are not hidden is not translated by "(Tous) as in 5.4.10
