Yandex 'portable' browser - New release : 20.4.3.268

Post by mikewalsh »

Morning, kiddiwinks.

Yandex have recently released a new 'beta' for Linux. 19.12.3.332 has now morphed into 20.4.3.268.

This is a good, 'alternative' Chromium 'clone'. However, the previous warning applies; because Yandex have set this thing up to report everything you do back to a Russian 'cloud', make sure you go through the settings with a fine tooth-comb and remove/disable anything that refers to Yandex or Russia!

PepperFlash is included, naturally, and WideVine works without issues.

Yandex have started upping their game, and the browser now sports an Opera/Vivaldi-style sidebar with various functions. Unlike Opera, however, you're stuck with the 'standard' choice of functions, and you can't customise this the way you can with Opera.....or, for that matter, Vivaldi.

It's still a nice touch, however.

Tabs can also be altered to look like those from earlier versions of the browser, either the last one - sharp, angular tabs - or the earlier type, angled with rounded edges.

-----------------------------------------------------

I'll need to mention here, again, the 'workaround' required for bookmarks in this browser. Yandex even want you to save your bookmarks to the afore-mentioned Russian 'cloud', doubtless so that the Russian security services can pick your data over at their leisure. Uh-uh. We don't want that, do we?

So; the easiest way around this is to manually copy across the bookmarks file from another Chromium 'clone'.

Fire Yandex up, and allow it to create its profile. Shut it down again. Go into the portable directory → yandex → PROFILE → Default. Leave this window open.

Similarly, go into the profile of any other Chromium 'clone' you may have, where you have everything set-up. You're looking for a file simply titled 'Bookmarks'. Drag this across to the first window open on your 'Default' Yandex profile → drop → Copy. Re-start Yandex, and voila! your bookmarks are all in place, and ready to go.

----------------------------------------------------------

Anybody interested in this can find it at my Google Drive:-

Any issues, y'all know where to find me. Feedback's always appreciated.

Posting from it now.

Thanks mikewalsh but I might give this one a wide berth.

Can't say as I blame you, Grant.....but I DO believe in providing as wide a choice as possible, and the construction of all these Chromium-based browsers is pretty much identical; if you can build one as a 'portable', you can usually do the same with all the others.
