Can Mesa Shader Cache be deleted with no harm? [SOLVED]

Post by Sky Aisling »

Hello, :)
Distro: Bionic Beaver(64)
Machine: Levono H535 6G RAM

Can mesa_shader_cache be deleted without harm?
I clean out Firefox, Palemoon caches regularly with no apparent distruption of the system.
Does the same apply to the mesa shader cache?
My game playing is limited to non-internet dependent apps like Aisleriot solitaire.
Thank you for your response in advance.

Sky

It would be safest to re-start X/Xorg/Xwindows after deleting the Mesa Shader Cache.
That will replace the items in the cache dir, so there is not much point in deleting the mesa cache.
It's only about 2MB in my Pup.

glxgears seems to run properly if the cache is deleted.

@dancytron
@williams2

Thank you both for your responses.

dancytron you write, "YYMV". What does YYMV mean?

williams2 you're right the size of the cache is small. Tonight mine reads 404k. OK, I'll ignore that cache.

Can Mesa_Shader_cache be moved from root to initrd/mnt/dev_save?

@mikewalsh has a method to place browser caches away from root in order to save space inside root. He makes directories in initrd/mnt/dev_save that hold the cache and profiles of .mozilla.

Can Mesa_Shader_cache be moved from root to initrd/mnt/dev_save in the same manner and still work properly?

Thank you in advance for your suggestions.

Update...I've placed Mesa_Shader_cache in /initrd/mnt/dev_save with an relative link back to root. All is well. BB64 running clean on this Dell Inspiron N7010. :)
