Problem wth pinboard after changing background

I have been using Puppy for a long time (I think I started with Puppy 3.xx, but really got into it with 4.2.1). I obviously am not as knowledgeable about how it works as I should be. Two things in particular:

1. Pinboard - Until recently I had not encountered any "pinboard" issues. A few days ago, I changed the background and got a message about "no pinboard in use". Since then, every time I click to open a window, my background and all my icons (except home) disappear. I can get them back by left-clicking on the desktop, but I find it annoying that I have to do this.

2. I recently was researching switching to xfce as a desktop environment, and noticed a lot of references to "ydrv" and "adrv" what are these and how are they used?

I apologize for my ignorance, but I do love Puppy.

I have gotten this "no pinboard in use" message in fossapup64 (well, my heavily remastered version). not at all regularly, but every so often... I had chalked it up to something I had introduced somehow but maybe not...
seems to happen only on boot and restarting X solves it for some time.

The *drv.sfs files are the available layers for newer puppies, if they are present and have the correct name e.g. fdrv_fossapup64-9.5, they are loaded automatically as part of the system. f = firmware, z = kernel, a = applications and y is and extra for addons/patches etc...

Thanks, puddlemoon. Restarting the window manager did seem to solve the pinboard problem (at least for now). Do you know of anywhere I can read up more on how to use ydrv, etc?

The sfs's end up in the stack in this order from the top down:
1) adrv - notionaly an "application" layer
2) ydrv - notionaly a "fix" layer
3) pupsfs - the main puppy sfs from the iso
4) fdrv - notionaly a "firmware" layer
5) zdrv - notionaly a "driver" layer

6) Any "extra" sfs's loaded with sfs_load.

So both adrv and ydrv cover the main pupsfs and so can be used to update it.
The fdrv is under the main pupsfs but covers zdrv and so can be used to update it.
Any "extra" sfs's cannot update any system sfs's.

Note1: In woof-ce puppies the fdrv and zdrv contain files that do not exist in the main pupsfs, (so it doesn't matter that they are below it).

Note2: The save layer is always above any sfs's, so a ".pet" can update any sfs.
