New kernels (s15pup64) break truecrypt7.1a

Post by watchdog »

Truecrypt 7.1a fails the first mounting volumes using s15pup64 (a build of June) with kernel 5.15.117. I was compelled to revert to older kernels. At ibiblio huge_kernels are no more updated. The published kernels are not archived for later use.

Not sure if any will solve the Truecrypt issue, but new kernels are first published on this Sub-Forum, https://www.forum.puppylinux.com/viewforum.php?f=65 and many preserved on https://archive.org/download/Puppy_Linux_Huge-Kernels. The best place to start a search for Kernels is on the Forum's thread: each publication may identify whether or not the offering was built to comply with the 'user-merge' Rule that must now be adhered to with newer Ubuntu-or-debian based Puppys. Ozsouth alway now provides that information about the new kernels he publishes.

AFAIK Truecrypt is no longer maintained, but its archives can still* be opened in Veracrypt which is. This post may --I'm guessing-- suggests that the problem you wrote about may have been experienced using Veracrypt, but has been fixed. https://www.veracrypt.fr/code/VeraCrypt ... ?showmsg=1. Note the 2023-05-18 entry.

Download links for Veracrypt are here, https://www.veracrypt.fr/en/Downloads.html. But as far as I can tell they are either to (a) source files for compiling or (b) don't include GTK3 components; and (c) none are specifically for Slackware so additional libraries are probably needed to use under Slackos even if that's possible.

Frankly, I'd consider some other encryption application. Don't use it much, but pzip has replaced my use of veracrypt. IIRC, my portable version of pzip ran under Slacko. Packit, which AFAIK runs under every Puppy, offers encryption as an option. There have been recent posts about ZuluCrypt and LUKS.

Edit: Update, just stumbled upon the claim that ZuluCrypt can manage Truecrypt volumes. Discussion about ZuluCrypt on the Forum is here, https://www.forum.puppylinux.com/viewto ... 244#p92244

* The post suggests that support for TrueCrypt will be dropped; which I take to mean hasn't yet been.

I'm happy with Truecrypt 7.1a even though it's not maintained. I think I'll use it for some time in the future using an appropriate kernel for my old PCs. Many thanks for the link to the archive of puppy kernels.
