Signal Messaging App - error message when I run it.

Post by cobaka »

Hello all.

I found a squashed file for the 'Signal' app on The Rockedge Kernal site. -> https://rockedge.org/kernels/
After downloading I got the error message below. It's about a missing C library.

Regarding the C library, I found this:

root# find -iname 'glib-2*' | more
./initrd/pup_ro2/usr/lib/glib-2.0
./initrd/pup_ro2/usr/share/glib-2.0

(1) Has anyone here had experience with Signal?
(2) What should/can I do wrt glib2?
I looked in the puppy package manager. Found zip.
Maybe I should be running it on FossaPup, not Bionic64?

Thanks all

@cobaka It's the version of GLIBC that isn't high enough on Bionic to run this program (required is version 2.29 at least).
You can check for what is the version on your system with ldd --version

Yes, no way on Bionic.

Got it @fredx181. Thanks!
Terminal says: root# ldd --version
ldd (Ubuntu GLIBC 2.27-3ubuntu1) 2.27

I need 2.29. Can I replace 2.27 with 2.29?
(My guess) - too hard for me.

OK - moving on past uPupBB64 - I got FossaPup running on a thumb-drive.
Installed 'signal' as sfs. (I think that's the correct word).
Found signal here: menu -> internet -> signal.
Ran signal. Saw the sign-on screen. (yay!)

Now I discover something: I must scan a 2-d code with my phone. Don't have that app. May need a new phone. (Yikes!) Making progress but not home yet. Again - thanks.

@cobaka You need the Signal mobile app! Using that app's QR code scanner/reader it will make the connection as long as that phone has a camera.

The Signal mobile app is all you will need in this case I think.

Hello @rockedge

I'm a little confused. I want to get Signal on my desktop.
Does this install Signal on my desktop or on my mobile?

Thanks,
cobaka.

Once it (Signal) is running on the desktop and you see that QR code that's when the mobile app comes in play. The desktop program and the moble app create a link between themselves. Because the phone does the actual communication work and the desktop acts as the easier to use interface.

Hope that makes sense :thumbup2:
