the previous message is from beta1, the one I just wrote is beta2, I think you can look at it from this menu when you put the sfs files into mnt/home, but the gz didn't open for me

remove the fake .gz from the name and give it execute permissions to run.

Also for it to show any SFS packages, you have to have them stored in /mnt/home.

To have a /mnt/home in the file system, you have to make a save, and are booting using the save.

/mnt/home to the file system, will be the partition the save is on.

I did what you wrote,
I put the sfs files in mnt/home
I replaced it with sfs_load.overlay in usr/sbin
I understand the logic, it looks like a nice graphical interface for uploading sfs files, if I can't do it I'll upload it manually

Frugal install using a save folder.

Using Package Manager (synaptic) to download and install dictionaryreader.app (0+20080616+dfsg-2.1).

DictionaryReader is a dictionary application that queries Dict servers in
the internet to let you look up words.

It and a lot of other dependency stuff also downloaded and installed.

Got this error when completed.

The app seems to be working and is similar to Pdict program that has been in Puppy for years.

I noticed that and tried to build a version using, IIRC, the one from F-96. IIRC, it contained an incompatible binary suggesting pdict would have to be recompiled; something above my pay-grade. So I substituted artha via synaptic. Not many dependencies and it's Offline: better with my occasionally flaky wifi.

Artha seems to be a Thesaurus not a dictionary.

But it does seem to be good if you want a Thesaurus.

Well after using my thesaurus to find out the difference between a thesaurus and a dictionary --not much the way I use them-- I booted into f-96 and figured what the big deal with pdict is. It's the variety of dictionaries it offers. I also almost figured out how to transpose f-96's to Bookworm. But there's an error involving coding and coding 'ain't my job'.

At the end of the day, pdict is a front end providing direct access to dict.org. dict.org exists, and pdict's config -- in /etc-- specifies it. Still this error remains:

Edit: Like Einstein, I only thought I was wrong. Tried it again and it works.
Requires a Restart-x. Fixmenu's isn't sufficient as the pet writes to /etc.

I installed your pdict pet.
Did nothing else.
Have Pdict listed in menu->Document

So I did not have to restart x or anything to get it showing in the menu.

Thanks for providing this pet to have a program that should be in any Puppy version.

Now that I actually know that pdict is not just ONE dictionary, I agree it should be in every Puppy. I'm not sure how it fell out, or why it had previously been in. When I examined fossapup64-9.5's /var/packages there was no reference to it even though it was installed.

Not sure why I thought it needed a restart-x. Your original post got me trying to recall how I had previously explored the problem. Even though it was late at night, repeating what I thought I had done suggested the need to carefully examine the code. That revealed the need for the dict binary; and testing a prior build the need for config in /etc. Never a good idea to work when you're tired. The pdict-1.pet I posted was third version I built. It was tested last night. The original text of my post reported the failure. I shut-down without Saving.

Although I was in a rush this morning --and only working on my first cup of coffee [also bad ideas]-- I had had the idea that a restart-x might be necessary. When that worked, I attributed success to it. Since it's not needed, I guess last night's failure must have resulted from something I did or didn't do and don't recall.

I have just got it running in qemu in EasyOS 5.3.2, and it runs nicely. Internet and audio work, but video is only vesa. There is something strange with the screen proportions.

Then I can try the vmware video driver in qemu, which should give superior performance.

Yes, it is big, in Easy 5.3.2 have /usr/lib/libxatracker.so.2.5.0 which is 8.2MB

In Bookworm Pup64, there are other components that maybe could be removed if you don't want to support vmware?

/usr/lib/x86_64-linux/gnu/vmwgfx_dri.so 25MB but that is probably hardlinked so doesn't add any extra size.

is it a new build that you put on Smokey01, was trying it and in last version 11/06/2023 apt is not present/working.
In beta2 apt worked in terminal.
It's really a nice work, like BarryK, i test a lot on VM so i like vmwgfx too.

just installed the RC version, and like the project i misdownload, bash don't find apt command.
Synaptic name appear in the menu but no icon and no response.
I installed it directly ans haven't check in LIVE, will tell you.
It's a gorgeous distro and fast.

@N_da , The support for APT etc is on the bdrv, included in the iso, not in the main SFS in bookworm64. In my frugal install to SSD, that bdrv goes in the directory with the main SFS, initrd etc. and is loaded automatically on boot. I don't use the supplemental adrv or the fdrv so I omit those.

@N_da. 30 second cooks tour. The drive use is pretty much in line with other newer pups, except for the addition of the bdrv with its' APT/synaptic support. puppy_ dpup_10.0.sfs carries the bulk of the OS, the adrv carries a 'starter browser, the fdrv has the firmware for many -but not all- wifi cards , modems, or dongles, and the zdrv, paired with vmlinux for a given kernel, has the kernel modules. initrd.gz basically assembles the layer cake that is puppy from the various 'drives' and then switches to run that puppy. A ydrv will be loaded if present, and a number of us use it to customize the install, substitute another window or file manager, or 'replace' a savefile. Greatly simplified but the gist is ok I think.

In my install, the Atheros wifi card in all my computers is directly supported by all newer kernels thus eliminating the need for the fdrv, and all of my browsers are run as portables and located on my data partition so are present at first boot and simple to link to the tray ao I don't need the adrv. Instead of using a savefile, other than for first setup, all my customizations and look'n'feel are carried in the ydrv so unless I specifically add or change something in the ydrv, every boot is a fresh start. Makes me more inclined to try things out even if there is a fair probability of failure or even crash. Even on my somewhat dated hardware (circa 2012), recompressing my ydrv if I add something to that directory on the data partition (symlinked to the desktop) is a matter of 20 seconds or so, so not odious.

It has a Radeon Display chip/card/whatever.

00:01.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Mullins [Radeon R4/R5 Graphics] (rev 45)

When booting, it boots with the 800x600 vesa display and freezes hard on the 1st setup screen.

When booting to the console with pfix=nox, that works. When I run the xorg wizard and try anything but the default, X fails and goes back to the command prompt. The default freezes the same way as before. edit: also tried manually entering "radeon" and "radeon_b10" in the xorgwizard. /edit

My guess is a missing display driver or some kind of mesa.dri related file...

If I understand correctly, the Woof-CE generated firmware and 6.1.X kernel of BW64 (and Vanilla Dpup) are based on the content and configuration parameters currently employed by mainstream Debian 12 (Bookworm).

Debian Bookworm will be at 'Full Freeze' status on 24 May 2023, at which time software/firmware updates are essentially complete for the official release of Debian-12 on 10 Jun 2023.

A quick check of the fdrv of BW64-Beta1 suggests it already contains the Mullins iteration of Radeon firmware for the R4/R5 Graphics chipsets, but I don't know about specific support for revision 45. Even so, the next release of BW64 (Beta2) will contain any potential firmware updates concurrent with the official release of mainstream Debian Bookworm.

Maybe @dimkr will also reply.

I just installed it with the kernel_5.4.53_usrmerged.tar.gz in https://www.smokey01.com/radky/puppy-bookworm64/ instead of the default kernel. It loaded the display correctly and there was no lockup.

I repeated the procedure again just to be sure...and it's the same password is wrong! It appears that this Luks + password encryption option is defective !!!

/mnt/sda1/BookwormPup64/dpupsave66.tar.gz it creates a pupsave on it self - doesnt ask for name on savefile like F96-ce and others.

i can see it loads on bootup - but the iso starts from scrach again, like there is "nothing" in the save file?
