My first steps into Puppy 64-bit world

Post by amethyst »

Okay. so I have unlimited internet now so can do more things on the net especially in terms of streaming, etc. Many sites have DRM requirements so you require a 64-bit browser (32-bit not supported for this anymore). So the need to go 64-bit browser and checking out the 64-bit Puppys. The only 64-bit Puppy I had was a beta version of DpupBuster which I started up. Got everything set up and it performed well even with the very latest Firefox browser but being a beta release there were some hickups in terms of stability. Downloaded all the Fossapup64 versions. Had problems on my machine with the available 9.6 versions: slow booting couldn't get my hidden wifi connection set up. The CE version wouldn't allow me to use an old kernel and the kernel that comes with it hangs on my machine, very frustrating. Then tried the original 9.5 release. What a revelation, everything just worked OOTB, I even slotted in an old Tahr 64-bit kernel. This looks like a Puppy I can run on this machine for quite a long time. Just a tip for users with slightly challenged machines like mine: Disable or get rid of Conky. According to Task Manager it eats up the second most resources after the browser on my machine.

Actually downloaded Xenial64 too. Everything works and I can run the latest Firefox portable. Very fast and 500MB (uncompressed) smaller in size than Fossa64 9.5. I'll be using Xenial64 most of the time since I can do everything that Fossa offers on my old machine with less bloat.

@amethyst I ran Xenial successfully but soon switched to Bionic64 which I still have machines running. Xenial64 is a solid OS and matches up well with older machines like the ones that ran 32 bit Windows XP or 32 bit Windows 7 but are 64 bit capable.

Back using Fossapup9.5, seems rock solid. Unfortunately had a few crashes when running Xenial64 probably related to running it with the newest
Firefox (all crashes occurred whilst streaming). I may download Bionic64 to check it out as backup in place of Xenial 64.

Bionicpup64 8.0, Xenialpup 7.5 and Xenialpup64 7.5, and Fossapup64 9.5.

All of these have the program Quickpet on the desktop.

All of them have bug fixes and updates that are provided after they were released.

These are not part of the ISO package.

Run Quickpet -> Info -> (the version name) Updates

Reboot updating the save so the changes are now being used.

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.
When I was a kid, I wanted to be older.
This is not what I expected :o
