Pup Only (One week and counting)

Post by bullpup »

I suppose it's official now. I haven't touched my bare metal Linux install for a week now and have been using Puppy only as my daily OS.
Probably no big deal for the brunt of the people on this forum but it is for me! This old dog learnt a new trick.

My "weapons of choice" at the moment are Vanilla Dpup and FossaPup64 both equally configured to my liking and use.
The only thing I still need to figure out is to implement my prescription VPN system wide. Already have it running per browser add-on which will suffice for the time being.
Next thing I'd like to 'master' is to properly use the (frugal) installers packaged with Pups. I've been reading the documentation extensively and I'm SURE I can do it it's just that I haven't been doing it yet. (Lack of time). A break from work is on the horizon next week so I will keep myself busy with these 2 'projects'.

Thanks to EVERYONE for providing so much information for us newbies. Couldn't have done it without you guys.

Hi there

Are you using a subscription based VPN?

If your moving forwards with a frugal installation. It would be useful to inform members what storage device you plan to use and size.

Also, RAM might be useful too. Especially, if you need to create a SWAP file.

Yup, subscription. NordVPN. I tried to install as per their website and that sort of worked but a socket was not created so I'll have to sort that which is part of the next learning curve. But I'm up for it.

As for the frugal install and such: I pretty much have an idea what to do (and what NOT to do lol) as I have been reading quite extensively and having a fairly good idea as to how to proceed. But it's all theory still and have to put that into practice.
If I really get stuck on the latter challenge I surely will ask for help but for now I will just go ahead and do it. If any problems will arise I will look first for answers doing a forum search which has helped me a LOT in the past.

Cheers @Jasper

I don't have NordVPN; and you may already have discovered the below link. But as others with knowledge have not responded, I'll fearlessly and perhaps foolishly call this post to your attention, https://owlhowto.com/how-to-fix-whoops- ... not-found/.

Not exactly in point or directly applicable under Puppys. But it may provide a clue as to how to solve your NordVPN issue.

I suggest that you start a specific thread. There are post about Proton and Windscribe. But those providers offer files which can be used with Openvpn. Does NordVPN? I don't think so. So a discussion of how to setup NordVPN could be generally helpful to those desiring to run other VPNs which also don't.

Edit: Just stumbled upon Jafadmin's thread regarding NordVPN, https://www.forum.puppylinux.com/viewto ... 9603#p9603.

Hope they help.

That might do it @mikeslr. Will give that a shot for sure. :thumbup2:

EDIT:
If I manage to get it up and running I will post a write down on it. Deal. (Gonna be a weekend project though so it'll take a few days.)

@bullpup :-

Yay! Good for you...

I'm a looong way past 1 week, running Puppy-only. (1 month? 1 year?) My next milestone will be the 1-decade marker.....in about 12 months time. I joined the community on the 28th June, 2014:-

Can't believe it's been that long. Mind you, I'm still a spring chicken next to our elder statesman, @Fossil .....

:o  :D

We're very glad to have you with us. You've demonstrated impeccable taste, so..... May your stay be a long (and happy) one!

Mike. ;)

Hi, bullpup and may I too welcome you to the forum. :welcome: :D That young whipper-snapper Mike Walsh is too kind; 'elder statesman'. Hah! I must admit that I first started playing around with Puppy Linux almost two decades ago, in that long-lost time of squealing 'dial-up' modems - and, as the story goes, I never looked back. So, pull up a chair, take your shoes off, make yourself comfortable- and have a drink: you might be here quite a while.

@mikeslr

I managed to get the NordVPN CLI app working on VanillaDpup! :geek: Running now as I type.

It wasn't as straight forward as I was used to install it on regular distros but I did it (eventually).
Going to write a how to for other members today.

Next is to install through OpenVPN via @OscarTalks app VPN on/off. Will do a How To on that also n case of success.

2 weeks now. 8-)
Ghehhehe, got to start somewhere right?

Seriously though I have pretty much set my Vanilla Dpup up the way to my liking and haven't been using my traditional OS since. Well, updated it once and that's it.

While using Puppy on a daily basis it's benefits are getting clearer. Way faster, so much easier on my hardware (less noise) and the responsiveness is so much better.

I am looking forward to eventually get to the "next level" (if there is one) and learn more. Who knows at some point I'll be able to actually give some solid advice to someone
