I don't have the skills to understand but It might be useful for someone else to help you

boot into another linux and see what HDMI device works
add same to a fresh /etc/asound.conf

MSCW is installed on fossapup (and probably on others pups) You could compare.

So, there is that Furthermore I checked asound.conf and compared it to my laptops' (running EasyOs 5.3, sound is ok) and it looks exactly the same (device 0 instead of 3).

But you are right it does seem to appear that there are 2 lines missing and the LAST line is also different.

The main thing that stomps me over all of this is why does my sound over HDMI work with any other OS, you know?
One positive thing about all this is that I did learn a LOT about the workings and file structure and configuration etc. That is pretty neat.

I will buy an USB sound card tomorrow and see what that is doing. Interesting to learn about that too.

Both config files look exactly the same I have even copied the asound,conf from my EasyOs laptop into the troubled machines', did a manual re-write, everything.

The only difference I can see is in the dmesg output where the first 2 lines are somehow omitted. I think THAT is the culprit.

As to how to change that or getting these 2 lines in the appropriate file.......I have yet to discover.

copying the configs from one machine to another might be less than useful with different hardware

is the fossa asound.conf from the same machine as the one you are trying to get easy working on? if so please post the entire asound.conf from fossa and a screenshot of mscw from fossa

You might be on to something.........

I am not at home at the moment but I will make sure I will put your suggestion into action tomorrow.

Then again it shouldn't be this complicated to get the sound to work in Easy on that machine. Because:

1) Any other OS has working audio on that machine.
2) The 2 lines missing from the dmesg is most likely the cause of the issue.

I will do a clean install again tomorrow and will create a clean Fossa as well and then change it. (Although I am pessimistic on the outcome.)

I could be talking out of the top of my head here, but do remember that most of Barry's creations over the last several years have been highly experimental in part. He's tried out a LOT of ideas you wouldn't normally even find in cutting-edge mainstream distros.

Like ownerships, for example. I don't think I've ever seen another distro anywhere that has Firefox running under its own ownership group ("firefox"). I accept this is all part of the experimenting with containers, but.....perhaps this might point you in the right direction..?

Indeed, you are so right. That's what I was thinking also. Well, along those lines because the nitty gritty of 'Puplike" OSs is still something I'm trying to figure out and learn. (Heck I'm still having to wrestle to master a proper install to USB the "Puppy" way but getting more comfortable with that as well.) And that's a good thing. So much to learn and it's addictive too.

After trying all I could possibly think of and applying all the tips and tricks forum members provided it occurred to me that (in my specific case) the problem has to be something else. I am at peace with that now and I will not keep trying at this point because this is an issue that is waaaaay above my head.

I accept this is all part of the experimenting with containers, but.....perhaps this might point you in the right direction..?

I moved the TV to my Lenovo desktop. No problem with audio over HDMI to the TV.

UPDATE

Just did a fresh install. Used mixer first, choose in "configuration" HDMI output, MSCW set device 3, did the sound test and "beep". Awesome.

Saved session, rebooted, checked sound.......nada. Went over to the mixer, "configuration" and the HDMI choice was gone!

Only "stereo output" and "off" to choose.

Did another fresh install. Applied the above with one exception: I did NOT set any card or device as default.

Saved session, rebooted, did sound test and it worked.
(But now the drives don't show up and can't click any of the applications).

Doing a hard shut down and start up again and see what will happen. PS load is very high, the graph in the tray is solid red.

I'm clueless as well. At least Things are (somewhat sorted) now and all works well. After starting up this morning I was still a little skeptical as I did made some changes here and there (not sound related) and saved the previous session.

All I had to do was to select the HDMI device in MSCW. The settings in the Mixer was the same as the previous setting with HDMI output still selected.
All is well

5.3 may have worked as well after so many fresh installs and configurations, I don't know. 5.3.1 was on a USB I use(d) or my MackBook Air and plugged that one into my PC. The previous installs of .1 I made on my PC all "failed" to do the sound thing, it was only after I transferred the laptop install (which I also created on my PC but never ran on it as it was intended for my laptop) TO my PC that the audio over HDMI would work. In one go, just by selecting it AND select it in the Mixer WITHOUT setting card 3 as default.
After rebooting the Mixer still showed the selected HDMI output, MSCW highlighted device 0 but device 3 was still checked. I highlighted that, sound test worked, started Chromium and the sound was ok. Also in MPV player and Celluloid. NOTE: I did not set device 3 as default because that broke stuff before for reasons mere mortals do not understand.

On my PC I created another fresh install for testing purposes and I will see if the I can replicate the issue or not. I will also do a fresh install of 5.3 for the same testing purposes.

Welp, it did it again!

Set dev3 as default last night, saved session and HDMI device is gone from the mixer again!

NOTE

I JUST found this out: The issue mentioned in this topic ONLY affects 5.3. I just took a 5.3.1 installation from my laptop, plugged it into my PC, started up, and sound works ootb without having to configue anything! Saved session, rebooted and sound is working once more without having to configure anything.

Very interesting to mentions: This time I did an unencrypted install (no password at installation phase).

It's me again.

I have this new (second hand) Lenovo ThinkCentre and all the above issues do NOT apply anymore.

NO issues with sound whatsoever. So the former issues where machine specific.

Just needed to say that as so many of you where helping me out to get it solved and again thank you all for that.
