No sound over HDMI

Post by bullpup »

Hi everyone.

I am doing a try out if you will to run 5.3.1 on my workstation. All is working fine except sound.......I feel like such a noob, lol.

Picked the right soundcard, checked the mixer and nothing is muted yet the speaker icon in the tray keeps being accompanied by this big red cross that says no-no.
Sound works just fine in any other including puppies and dogs but refuses in my favorite EasyOs.

Am I overlooking something?
Regards, bullpup.

asound.conf says:

Code: Select all

defaults.pcm.card 0
defaults.pcm.device 3
defaults.ctl.card 0
#SND_HW_PROFILE='0+pci+8086:1c20'

EDIT: Reason I want to fix this: I want to move away from mainstream "big" Linux distros and easyOs is my way to go. Sound is working on my laptop OOTB.

After reading a LOT on the forum over this issue (which appears to be an EasyOs/Easy/pup specific issue) I came across something that at least did something.

I edited the

Code: Select all

/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

file and added 2 lines:

Code: Select all

options snd-hda-intel index=0
options snd-cmipci index=1

It doesn't give me any sound yet but at least the cross has disappeared behind the speaker icon. Still NO sound on either card and/or device. No headphones either.

"Get a pup", they said. "It'll be fun", they said. They where right!

Have you tried the Multiple Sound Card Wizard (EasySetup -Hardware-Audio or mscw in a terminal) ?

Hey @Caramel .

I have. And just about anything else I could do. Read the forum, tried and applied many if not all possible solutions and still getting nada.

It is frustrating and intriguing at the same time. Even installed the Retrovol.pet. Didn't work either.
Like I said all other pup-like distros work but I couldn't use those as a daily driver. Easy is the only way for me (security and containerized). Sound works ootb on my laptop AND MacBook Air. Not on my workstation.

There is also alsamixer to verify that the sound card is not set to mute

I've spent quite a bit of time tinkering with the sound in EasyOS.
Some suggestions:
1) run alsamixer in terminal and choose 'default' sound card.

2) With the regular audio mixer (launched from bottom tray) be sure that mute icons are in unclicked state.
It's easy to mistake whether they are on or off because they are so small.

3) Install audacity and tinker with input settings

@don570 Thanks for the suggestions. Will give those a shot tomorrow. I've shut down the troubled machine after trying to fix this the better part of the day.

@bullpup
Oh no, do not install retrovol!
It will mess things up, hopefully if you uninstall it, things will not stay messed up.
You shouldn't have done any installing of other apps and files, they are just likely to cause trouble.

Is this an update or a new install?

Run MSCW, which runs automatically at first bootup, or you can run it from the menu or right-click on the tray sound icon.
Choose the HDMI interface, click on the "Test Sound", if no sound click on "Configure" and see if any levels need to be brought up, then try "Test Sound" again.

If it still doesn't work, do not install anything else to try and fix it.
Post about the failure here, and we will try and help.

Note, one of my computers is using a TV as monitor, with HDMI, and it works fine.

I presume that you are seeing the HDMI interface in Multiple Sound Card Wizard. If not, then you have a more basic problem.
Run "dmesg > dmesg.log" and open dmesg.log and see if any arror message about audio.

Hi, @BarryK

I used my old bios box with HDMI screen, cable and msi GT 710 graphics card.
Sound works for me. (A USB sound card could cause a problem.)

Here is what I see on my computer when run MSCW:

mscw-msg.png

...HDMI interfaces are listed, though I don't use them.

The point is, MSCW needs to list the HDMI interface, so that you can select it.
If it isn't listed, then you have a more fundamental hardware problem, see my earlier suggestion to run 'dmesg'.

Well, that's the thing......it DOES list it and it DOES let me configure it AND click it. I did all those steps a few times before posting my issue. I am aware of these procedures as I have done them countless times before on other pups and dogs and it works every single time. Alas not with easy os........which %$#@^

I will put up the output of the log in a bit. As far as I can see there is nothing wrong in there. 8-)

after you highlight the entry in MSCW does the sound test work?

after you select card/device do you see the gray confirmation dialog?

is the slider with the red line highlighted? if not, try the small circled mute button

Sliders to the max and sure its not muted.

(Just noticed these images showing a mistake as card 0 device 0 as showing is opposed to card 0 device 3. That is because I paid more attention to the screenshots instead of the actual configuration) But it is set on device 3. I use a Loewe TV as monitor and as said before it usually works with ALL OSs, pups, dogs and mainstream distros.

Beats me, guys. Thanks for all your input so far. Appreciated. :thumbup2:

No the soundcheck does not work........that's the whole issue.

For clarity, the above screenshot reflects my machine and the one before that was an example screenshot from BarryK's machine. ;)

Oh well, I will just go ahead and configure this install the way I like and just going to use it. Eventually I will just buy a set with a headphone jack and use that in stead. Because that DOES work. I just found out an hour ago but forgot to mention.

I am using HDMI audio by default. I have a video graphics card (NVIDIA Geforce gtx1030) in PCI slot.
and the linux kernel automatically uses its audio ability apparently. 'Nouveau' is automatically chose as video driver.

The sound card wizard has a long list of possibilities and they are all ticked off with green check mark.
I must leave them all ticked for my sound to work. This is rather strange but it works.

On my workstation machine with the sound issues there is only one HDMI instance. The above is a screenshot from my MacBook Air I am using right now and has multiple instances.

The thing that strikes me is that a) The hdmi output on my PC works on anything I'd throw at it except EasyOs where it works for others............so my issue is rare as it seems. I really have no idea.

sorry for the confusion about the screenshots

you do seem to have 1 hdmi device, and it does appear selected in mscw but the device does not appear/described as most hdmi devices in the mixer (looking at the screenshots of others)

in the lower right of MSCW is a questionmark when clicked brings up a dialog with the config file listed under technical notes
try renaming the config file and start over with mscw

Dell desktop Optima 990 with a video graphics card (NVIDIA Geforce gtx1030) in PCI slot.
For the record I have unusual situation to get my audio to work.

I don't select one sound card , instead all are ticked off (see image)

Even stranger, The input is set to rear microphone (plugged in)
even though I don't have a rear microphone and it's certainly not plugged in.
...but it does allow me to use my audio input port
so I can record audio.

It's not usually what I do but I give up!

Did everything there is to do: Did the option don provided here above, did all possible configurations (set the HDMI output in mixer configuration), tried every and any possible setting............but still NO sound.

Why does it have to be so hard with Easy whereas any other distro works right away ootb? It's not my TV, it's not my PC and/or it's cards, there's nothing weird in the BIOS, everything is as it should be.

This really blows. :(

If you're desperate...

1) Try USB audio card adapter- they are very cheap(under $10) and should work.
You would have to choose the adaptor with the sound card wizard.

2) If you have free PCI slot try a cheap (second hand) video card
I use NVIDIA Geforce gtx1030 but there are cheaper ones available.

Thought about the adapter tbh.

And you know, it's not that I'm desperate (although I REALLY wanted Easy on my PC as a secure daily drive) it's just that I'm super frustrated and annoyed. I mean, there is this masterpiece of an OS which has everything I was looking for (and then some) and I can't get the sound to work which is essential.

I might buy me another more high quality HDMI cable tomorrow tho. See if that makes a difference although I highly doubt it.

Thanks for your input @don570 . Appreciated.
