New: Tint2 top panel, icons with the ability to change the color scheme of folders.both for light and dark themes.13 colors to choose from.

Now includes two composite managers "Picom" and "xcompmgr" , by default "xcompmgr" is enabled,To enable "Picom" you must disable "xcompmgr" in ( /root/Startup/xcompmgr ). make the "xcompmgr" file unexecutable, restart X.after these steps, select "Picom gui" on the taskbar " Tint2 " - press start and autostart at boot.

Since fully-Arch-Linux-compatible KLA-OT2baseCE-2.0 comes with official and complete pacman package manager (think of it like Quickpet...).

pacman -S chromium

QEMU :

On my test PC, bare-metal, using SG2D, I booted the ISO file to desktop, without issues. Initially, I was taking the defaults KLA boot stanza (RAM0) followed running now with its 3rd stanza (Persistence).

I have on couple occasions where the taskbar at the bottom of the screen disapperas and I am unsure how or why this occurs. I have not set it to disappear-reappear or such. Only changes were to some minor theme changes via Menu>Customize Look&feel. The system has been updated via Menu>KLA Config>its obvious.

The timings on when this disappears is NOT obvious or which event in desktop navigations are the cause. Asside from Eolie browser and uring Openbox config to add desktops, nothing much has been done.

Restarting the deskopt restarts with expected taskbar.

Ideas?

Another issue
While the above test PCs are Intel, I have just booted this on a AMD PC, circa 2016 via Ventoy as well as SG2D. The system boots and when it switches from console mode to destkop mode, the screen attempts to populate, then goes blue-ish-blank. No mouse presence not reacts to keyboard Cntrl-Alt-Bksp. Nothing. The PC's screen is 1600x1200 with graphics via its motherboard (not nVidia). The outcome is the same no matter the ISO filel booter used.

I can Cntro-Alt-F2 to get to another console and after login, I get to KLA's console prompt. I could use some advice to handle this

  • At the prompt, what command could I use to start the desktop here?

  • Is there a way to kill the active desktop that is blank on Cntrl-Alt-F1?

Ideas?

For the AMD problem in its attempt to display the desktop,

  • Is there a hot-key instructing the system to go to console? (this is similar to PUP's cntrl-alt-bksp key)

  • Is there a command to instuct the console to start the desktop? (this is similar to PUP's 'xwin' command)

Thasks in advance.

Is there a way to kill the active desktop that is blank on Cntrl-Alt-F1?

systemctl kill getty@tty2

where tty2 means it's a virtual console for Ctrl-Alt-F2 .
Initially, we log in as tty1 ( Ctrl-Alt-F1 ) main desktop.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
you can add the " terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp " command to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/00-keyboard.conf

Code: Select all

Section "InputClass"
        Identifier "system-keyboard"
        MatchIsKeyboard "on"
        Option "XkbLayout" "us"
        Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
        Option "XkbVariant" " "
        Option "XkbOptions" "grp:alt_shift_toggle,terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp"
EndSection

restartx

Note:but don't forget we have auto login so you will be logged in again right away when pressing "ctrl_alt_bksp"

You can disable auto login
Menu > autologin (ON/OFF)

we don't have a screen lock, that's probably why this message pops up.

Are you running this on a laptop or desktop computer?
uncheck the power manager settings: Menu> settings> power manager -- system--security

That is: startx

Is there a way to kill the active desktop that is blank on Cntrl-Alt-F1?

In your case (blank) try pkill Xorg

@Sofiya I have been experimenting with exiting to prompt (exit X instead of restarting X) and came to this that works for me:
In ~/.bash_profile :

Code: Select all

  if [ -e /etc/systemd/system/getty@tty1.service.d/override.conf ]; then
if [ ! -e /tmp/autostartx ]; then # if /tmp/autostartx not exist do auto startx (first time login after boot)
if systemctl -q is-active graphical.target && [[ ! $DISPLAY && $XDG_VTNR -eq 1 ]]; then
touch /tmp/autostartx # make exit to prompt work rather than restart X (after first time login)
  exec startx
fi
    fi
  fi

EDIT: Perhaps it can do without the first and last line
When running openbox --exit or pkill Xorg from terminal from the Desktop it will exit to prompt then, which is IMO important feature.
But at first time login (at boot) it will autostart X .
(result of this is that RestartX from the menu will not restart X though (exit to prompt too))

I removed the exec startx and replaced it with just startx

We could look at KLV where we use logout to drop X to console or weedog void where we used pkill xorg.
We had to deal with autologin in KLV

It will be some hours before I can really look because at the moment I am waiting at the airport in New York City to fly to Colorado. My flight is at 8 PM and it's only 2:22 PM

KLV and KLA are very different (if only because of difference runit <> systemd but also Void <> Arch I think).
Have a good journey and/or arrival !
EDIT:

Yes I think that's best for a multi-user system .

Due to the latest updates of the Arch packages, some dependencies have been changed. As a result, some programs have stopped working. The KLA-OT2baseCE-2.0 image will be rebuilt, and corrections will be made to the build plugin. The image name will remain the same " KLA-OT2baseCE-2.0 ".

An observatioin that applies probably to all KLs: The BOOTISOS folder is locked. Thus when new releases or additional ISO files are available they cannot be added while the system is alive.

Need to unlock this on/before/after boot to desktop

Can the BOOTISOS folder be released after system start. I am using KL's boot option #3 "RAM2 Persistence..."

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for re-awaking brain cells.

For 30 years I have been aware of this command. And in PUPs, had become so accustomed to 'xwin/xorgwizard'.

I am going to need something to stop forgetting useful information. Maybe diet, more alcohol, or medical hemp in my salads will change things (smile). :geek:

Thanks again.

I just booted up KLA-OT2baseCE-2.0

and boy is this nice!

First of all, it just seems ridiculously fast. It opens LibreWolf appimg faster than any of my other operating systems, I mean more than significantly faster, like almost instantly, whereas all the other pups and KL's have a delay that has something to with theme engines.

But also, this system looks REALLY nice.

Perhaps the speed has something to with it being systemd based, but I believe KLV-Xfce is the same, could be wrong about that. And I'm not sure I want systemd, but it I do wonder if the speed difference is related. The system seems to do things like open the puppy-forum in a browser head over heels faster. Maybe that's wireless driver modules?

That's all above my paygrade.

At any rate @Sofiya, this system is totally impressive. I'll be playing with it quite a bit.

I now have to figure out again how to use AUR.

do it first thing:
To install packages from AUR Install the necessary development tools pacman -S --needed base-devel

And in Pamac package manager settings, set the switch to on to use it

Thanks I did read that, and I did it. But then I realized you updated the iso today, and I was using one that I downloaded before leaving town on Thursday.

So I downloaded the updated version and copied the files I'm about to boot.

Like I said, the LibreWolf appimage opens enormously faster on KLA-OT2 than any other OS so far, but as far as the puppy-forum browsing speeds are concerned, I'm noticing that the forum is opening faster on F96_CE, so I'm attributing that to the fact that I also updated the LibreWolf version from 111 to 113.

Perhaps the theme engine delays I'm getting opening LIbreWolf in other OS's are not present in OpenBox/Tint2.

I installed the base-devel and I'm reading the AUR wiki here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Arch_User_Repository

Basically AUR packages are source code that are compiled then installed. Correct?

I'll start with Xfe. I installed this in KLA-Xfce, so I must have compiled it from AUR, or did you help me with that? @Sofiya you may have compiled the package for me. My memory is fuzzy on that.

Also, it looks as though I may have to install all the dependencies, or does pacman manage that somehow?

yes this is source code which compiles and builds into a package xxx-xxx.pkg.tar.zst package and then installed

Where did you install Pamac from?

The assembly is performed by base-devel - let's call it "devx" , the dependencies for the program are installed by themselves

You find the program in the AUR package manager and it installs itself .

I don't understand you a bit

yes this is source code which is compiled and built into xxx-xxx.pkg.tar.zst package and then installed

Also, it looks as though I may have to install all the dependencies, or does pacman manage that somehow?

Where did you install Pamac from?

The assembly is performed by base-devel , the dependencies for the program are installed by themselves

You find the program in the AUR package manager and it installs itself .

I don't understand you a bit

Okay, I'll get back to you when I can form a more intelligent question.

@geo_c Probably there are different ways, but here's what I did (and works) to install xfe from the AUR :
pamac update # if required
pamac install base-devel
pamac build xfe
Then xfe should be installed + dependencies and there's also a package in /var/cache/pamac/xfe

Thanks @fredx181 , the piece I was missing is running the 'pacmac' command. I wasn't totally aware that it had it's own command lines.

In fact I installed base-devel using the pacman command, not pacmac.

Thanks, I knew there was a package, but I cleared all my caches and apparently didn't save a copy.

I still think I should install it myself to learn pacmac.

Those are the dependencies I was referring to. Seems that maybe using the pacmac command like Fred did is the easy way. Not that installing three dependencies is terribly difficult though.

The reason I asked the original question is that Arch wiki gave some switches in pacman to install and update dependencies automatically, and I wasn't sure that was the way to go, or if I understood the pacmac approach at all, which it seems I did need clarification.

install pacman -S --needed base-devel

everything is very simple open pamac
in the search enter xfe - select it
then click build , wait for pamac to build the package then install
