PupMTP times out?

Post by houndstooth »

I can connect Android to PupMTP in Fossa & transfer files.

The problem is the connection eventually times out where transfer & access stop working.

The temporary solution is to disconnect & reconnect.

It works before timing out again.

I'm keeping my Android awake (not sleeping).

Is this a common with a known fix?

Check your USB connection first. Make sure it was properly connected.
Also try to update simple-mtpfs program you can download it at https://pkgs.org

Alternate solution:
* Make sure that your phone and your PC was on the same wifi router
* Download FTP Server app on google play store.
* Run the FTP server app on your phone.
* On your Puppy. Run the gFTP or Filezilla and connect to your phone using the parameters given by the FTP server app on your phone

Are you stating simple-mtpfs is the same app builtin to Fossa & it's been updated?

I have an older, bigger app I use in Puppy for a more reliable connection using the same physical connection, but I want to use the builtin tool.

I can transfer files wifi but sharing setup takes longer. A physical connection has more integrity when it's working.

Yes it is. PupMTP is just a gui frontend for simple-mtpfs. Also try to update the libmtp too. Or sometimes just restart your smartphone. Android OS might got hang on MTP request sent by PC

@mistfire

Reiterating, PupMTP works just the connection times-out prematurely.

After my last post I transfered a 72MB CD in Fossa using PupMTP.

I would lose the connection if I kept using it, or if I took a break & came back... time.

Before PupMTP I attempted a wireless connection that I could not get to work. When I assert I can use wireless in Puppy, I should clarify that I have successfully used it before but not often enough for it to be rote. My Android file manager could not find the Samba share yesterday.

Xenialpup has an Android connection that does not work without go-mtpfs at 10s of MB.

Would go-mtpfs be the same dependencies builtin to Fossa or is it different altogether, I do not know.

Xenial with go-mtpfs has a more enduring if not perfectly reliable connection.

Wireless connection also appears to vary by the Puppy version. I just connected Puppy-Android SAMBA in an older puplet without a hitch.

The only other difference is in Fossa I was using Ethernet & connecting over wifi.

@mistfire can you recommend a version? Nothing looks like Puppy or Ubuntu. The target would be 64 Xenial, maybe a bare 64 Fossa.

This challenge has returned, trying to ween off go-mtpfs. Fossa without the adrv has a big pop-up pointing to simple-mtpfs if you try to mount an Android, alas it is not in the Fossa repositories.

@houndstooth

The application that does the work is go-mtpfs. Which is available in the PPM of Fossapup64-95.

You can adjust the default timeout setting to allow a timeout.

The default is 50000 milliseconds which is around 0.08 minutes.

Try running the command via terminal adjusting the timeout setting.

I just made to desktop entries that allow me to mount/unmount my phone eg

**EDIT**
It has been noted a few times that the latest build of simple-mtpfs (v4???) is broken (myself & BarryK on the forum).

@Jasper pardon my naivety, the timeout is adjusting? It works for a little while then stops because it's timing out? A connection isn't a connection by design...

Guessing otherwise you are stating the reason there's no simple-mtpfs package in the Fossa repositories is because it is really go-mtpfs? In Xenial at the moment but I will look for it.

What I have not tried yet is using go-mtpfs in Fossa because I assumed it used a different dependency.

FTP is a possibility if that lets me commandeer the Android file system (vs simply transferring files). Had been hoping also simple-mtpfs is smaller than go-mtpfs. I made a little smaller .sfs but the go-mtpfs I use is 47MB.

@houndstooth

I can upload a pet package for simple-mtpfs for you compiled in FP95. It passes all the internal checks....but when you try to transfer/write a file, it spits out an error.

Regarding FTP transfers.....I might have misread this but there is an option/command you have to specify as it will drop the connection. This would be evident on large transfers. It might be a Noops(?) command. It simply to remind the device that even if there is no interaction, the connection should not be dropped for inactivity.

I transfer HD movies, Iso's with no difficulties. Problems or slow down only occurs if a directory has a lot of tiny files to deal with.

If you look in the REQUESTS subforum, I did upload a file back in Dec 2022.

A search for Testing Simple Mtpfs as the topic title with my name. Or I can give you a newer buold.

@Jasper there are many versions of simple-mtpfs on pkgs.org, but we should have whatever we use builtin.

weak connection:
The problem I experience in transfers (both 64 Xenial w/external go-mtpfs and 64 Fossa default) is usually related to time.

if I connect & work fast it works. If I take a break or fuddle around I lose the connection.

app functionality:
Fossa bare (no adrv) has the Android connect gui menu option, but it doesn't work with a pop message requesting simple-mtpfs.

I was just going to hack around, but what I want is the default simple-mtpfs Fossa bare is looking for. Then I'd try to make the same work in 64 Xenial.

Peebee's 32s seem to work but booting any os just for Android file transfers is laborious. Puppy users should have it in everything.

@Jasper here's the dialog in lean Fossa if it makes it any easier to know what it is. Though it isn't in the repositories, it looks like it's supposed to be in:

Both are required ........... the first one is the dependency.

libmtp-1.1.21-x86_64
https://www.mediafire.com/file/u8nmyqu5 ... 4.pet/file

simple-mtpfs-GIT-21-05-2023-x86_64
https://www.mediafire.com/file/jezxe7z5 ... 4.pet/file

Source/s:

https://github.com/phatina/simple-mtpfs

https://github.com/libmtp/libmtp

Compiled in FP95 ............ did not work for me as I said earlier.
