Mullvad privacy browser (Firefox ESR fork)

Post by Null_ID »

Greetings again, did any of you Puppians know about this one?

https://mullvad.net/en/browser

It's another fork of Firefox that follows the ESR dev branch (in that way setting it apart from Librewolf, which follows the main dev branch), created in cooperation with the Tor Project to supposedly enhance privacy. Kinda like Tor without Tor, it instead promotes the Mullvad VPN service. I tried it last night with F96-CE_4 and it at least runs nicely, felt very smooth. Just download the official archive and unpack it somewhere, you're good to go. I for one will welcome another browser that doesn't whine about my use of the Root-privileges.

I've been using the Mullvad browser in fossapup but audio doesn't work. That may be because of how I'm starting it: neither the "start-mullvad-browser.desktop" or the "start-mullvad-browser" links would work for me, so I'm just clicking on "mullvadbrowser". I think I need some special "Puppy magic" for the audio!

Otherwise I like it fine!

@FredW On systems without pulseaudio, sound won't work by default with the new Firefox (and Mullvad too).
But a workaround is to run it with apulse (will emulate pulseaudio) e.g. from mullvad-browser/Browser/ in terminal: apulse ./mullvadbrowser
edit: or apulse /path/to/mullvad-browser/Browser/mullvadbrowser # change /path/to to what it is for you
If you don't have apulse, install it, here's a .pet by OscarTalks : http://www.smokey01.com/OscarTalks//apu ... x86_64.pet

Thanks! Worked like a charm!

I like that it opens so fast, remembers nothing, and you can have multiple instances running at once. Very simple and elegant!

You tried to start from the wrong script. Goto where you unpacked the files and look for a script called "mullvadbrowser".

This allows root usage.

So which free VPN client is recommended to be used with this otherwise I don't really see the point and would just use TOR instead.

This all depends on your usage and privacy concerns

https://mullvad.net/en/browser/tor-without-tor

Tor-developed browser produced to minimize fingerprinting and tracking. Without using The Tor Network. To free the internet from big data gathering.

........our goal was to give VPN users the browser quality of the Tor Browser – paired with the benefits of using a VPN.

I was led to believe if you downloaded an image/file etc your IP would be logged. Browsing is just fine. Same would apply to using the Tor network.

A VPN would not record your IP.
