Firefox esr portable won't fire up

Post by bigphil »

Hi all,

I'm trying to breathe new life into my mates PC by installing Puppy, it's currently running (sort of) Windoze XP.
The machine is a Compaq Presario 6000 with the AMD Athlon processor and 1gB of ram.
I've installed Dpup stretch 7.5 because I know it run happily on my old laptop.
However as the subject suggests Mikes portable won't launch, in fact the built in browser (palemoon) won't fire up.
Is it something to do with the crap processor?
Any suggestions please.

Regards

Phil.

@bigphil Which AMD processor is in the machine? This model Compaq Presario 6000 was sold with mostly low end AMD cpu's so I am wondering if the problem with firing up the browsers is a combination of the AMD cpu does not support SSE instructions and or the kernel in the Dpup is too modern.

There is a build of palemoon floating around specifically compiled for these older lower end home consumer machines with cpu's that do not support SSE

I think the 32-bit, SSE-only builds (v28.17.0, v29.1.0 & the current v29.4.1, all with glibc-2.28 'tweak'):- --thanks to MikeWalsh & Fenyo-- available here, https://www.forum.puppylinux.com/viewto ... 4251#p4251 is the one rockedge referred to.

But there's a 'catch 22' as Knightmare discovered, https://www.forum.puppylinux.com/viewto ... 711#p86711. It's hosted at mega.nz so you'll need a modern web-browser to fetch it. [Tip: employing an up-to-date Puppy and web-browser, download to a USB-Key; then plug the Key into your Compaq Presario].

If Mega.nz isn't cooperative, some of Mike Walsh's portable programs can also be found at Archive.org.

Palemoon glibc228 Portable 32.

The plot thickens.
I followed the link to Mikes Mega account and downloaded PaleMoon_glibc228-portable32.tar.xz.
I guessed this is the non SSE build as the account had another folder called SSE builds.
In fact Mike mentions the Athlon XP in his bottom post on page 25.
Guess what - it wouldn't fire up.

If you look here-
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_A ... processors
if you believe Wikipedia then all Athlon XP processors support SSE.

I'm at a loss as to the way forward if their is one.

Regards

Phil
