Oh my God!

Not again this road.

Really, no offense intended, though I can't read stuff like this anymore. It's always the same. Millions of words and no bucks. If anyone wants to spend some money, just send a PM to rockedge, ask for bank account or paypal or what ever is there to transfer some money and send it. Keep it private/classified/secret and that's it.

"Keep it private/classified/secret and that's it..."

Huh ??!?

A 'Donate' button, linked to a PayPal a/c, is about as anonymous as you can get. Nobody else has to know whether or not you decide to "help out". That's a matter for your own conscience, and between you and site admin....

You can forget "millions of words", Rainer. Stick that 'Donate' button up there, and let folks decide what they want to do. That's all there is to it. Done & dusted.

What ARE you getting your panties in such a bunch about..? Others amongst us have simply raised what we feel to be a perfectly valid point, that's all....and it is only a suggestion. Somebody raises a valid point, and whomp! you're immediately jumping down their throat?? :o Come on, mate; be reasonable.

It's entirely up to Rockedge as to whether or not he decides to implement something along those lines. It's hardly a matter of life and death, but financial assistance will always be welcome.

well for me

whether we contact rockedge personally
or have a donations system

its important that he knows we are willing to help

and it does not have to be anonymous
people can be recognized for their contributions

so this topic is not going away

have a nice day

I didn't reply to a suggested donate button. I just replied, beginning with "no offense intended" to almost the same stuff: announcements without anything happening. Keep your "shrug" on your own mind!

@ taersh:-

Fair comment! Mind you, you know as well as I do that in this community - as with many other subjects - everybody likes to have a say before anything is decided on. It's a 'do-ocracy', after all.... :D

Wanderer's right, though. The subject won't disappear, and it IS important that rockedge is aware that some of us want to help. The longer this stays "visible", the more likely others are to decide they, too, would perhaps like to contribute.

We'll see what happens. (No offense intended, mate; I'm just having one of those days when I really ought not to post...) Bloody meds are having their usual side-effects again!

I also did not say this topic should go away. Also I'm not thinking supporting rockedge by spending some money would be the wrong way etc. All I said/meant was, that I can't read such stuff anymore.

It is a sickness of the new world of the internet to make yourself feeling good by doing cool/good/great or trendy suggestions or to have a link in the signature leading to a cool/good/great or trendy thingy. In my opinion, most of these actions are hypocritical and doing a service only to make the poster/person itself feeling good.

I'm not yet saying wanderer or anyone else supporting this topic/idea would be or is a hypocrite. I'm offering my opinion based on my own experiences from real life! How do you say? Your mileage may vary?

BUT: this suggestion could have been also sent by PM to rockedge! Simply by sending: "Rockedge, please would you consider to add a donate button to the forum. Done.

Note: even if one may read it that way, I'm not trying to be offend to anyone. I like this do-ocracy very much. I'm not a native English speaker so, sometimes I might get the wrong terms/wording etc.pp.

Sorry for any misunderstandings that way! ;)

However: I'm sick of this stuff!

Long long time ago, I can still remember, I used to have a website on which I put some stuff I developed and included a PayPal link for anyone who wanted to donate. May well be a result of no-one being interested in what I was offering from development, but certainly no-one every donated a cent... So I decided that open-source was never going to pay any bills and removed the temporary-desire-to-earn-from-it from my mind. I also told my kids - do not take up Linux programming as a career!

yes wiak

rockedge probably wouldnt get rich

but the offer still stands
and i for one will donate
you never know the money might be needed someday
we are of course familiar with linux mint that publishes their donations
so we know that some people do contribute

this all is of course up to rockedge
but i do think it is important to at least bring up the subject

and now on a positive note
this is way cool having a new forum
and it seems to be coming along pretty well

cheers

Thank you wanderer for the consideration. We can decide how to proceed once the forum is more settled and fine tuned.

Oh I certainly don't mean that donations aren't fair. I own weedoglinux domain and another similar domain and both are 10 year longterm commitments, yet both opensource and that cost me several hundred dollars in domain name registration fees - of course that was my own choice, and that does not include any possible hosting costs (which I am so far avoiding, because that would be more than I was willing to additionally contribute). Domain names can be cheap for a special one year arrangement (a dollar or two sometimes), but not for subsequent years or long term...

By far the biggest 'cost', if valued, would be in time though, but that cost is only worth as much as the 'product' is appreciated, used, and valued - otherwise in opensource we just have to accept this as a hobby that we contribute to best we can. So personally, when it comes to anything like this I myself do (FirstRib WeeDog, for example) I doubt I would ever ask or accept contributions - I won't be paying more myself into it, but what is paid is already paid (for these future nine years remaining of it...).

So no doubt rockedge has costs involved in running this forum, especially if a paid host. If it wasn't a paid host, it would eventually probably have to become one because otherwise limitations of the site would come into play - for example, total storage size allowed for post attachments, but I have no idea about the hosting situation itself and trust it will be fine whatever happens. If a forum vanishes, the data/information stored on it (as we know) is the real concern - never a real problem to start a new forum otherwise.

Void Linux, by the way, had a problem (never resolved) with lost forum by the way. The person who was longish-term running it, suddenly stopped running it (but owned the domain...), so ever since there remains a frustrating problem that searches for Help on using Void often come up with results pointing to threads on the now non-existent forum and so many times I really wish I could read the answer!!! Void now just uses reddit page for its discussions, but personally I find that very limiting. However, to be fair, one good thing about reddit instead of a normal forum is that threads tend to be very small and a solution soon provided (so more like stackexchange) - I expect most of us agree that a forum is generally a terrible way to store useful information (the result being that we often have to search through a thread of dozens or even a hundred or more pages for something we know is somewhere in there...). Careful forum design and careful administration can probably at least help make these issues less awful (maybe).

Looks like there is a lot of work to do to get members of Old forum registered and regular here though; at least if attached statistics are anything to go by. Mind you, I never did trust these old forum statistics at all, not at all... (36,999 users online since yesterday according to June old forum stats!!!).

But seems to me that most of those currently posting on here now, are to a large extent the same regulars that posted on old forum. Not many seem to have been lost in that sense apart from the more glorious statistics... Perhaps not enough google search bots have registered yet???
