SFS not found 32bit OLDER system (no secure boot or UEFI on BIOS)

Post by gilligan8 »

Trying to boot off a USB drive made via Etcher on an old Acer mini pc that snaps on the back of a monitor (can get model if needed). When trying to launch off thumb drive I'm getting:

sda1 /puppy_upupbb_19.03.sfs not found.

Screen shot attached.

This PC has a very basic old BIOS so it doesn't have anything more than AHCI in the bios (tried on and native and no difference).

@gilligan8 what does the boot stanza(s) look like? Perhaps the USB is not seen as sda1 immediately. Perhaps altering the boot stanza to use UUID to identify the partition.

If I hit "e" a the boot option on the jump drive it says:

kernel/vmlinuz
errorcheck off
pmedia=cd pfix=fsck
initrd/initrd.gz
initrd/ucode.cpio /initrd.gz

change the line reading pmedia=cd to pmedia=usbflash,
then try and boot from the USB thumb drive.

Well, if that didn't work, it may be time to redo your USB thumb drive, BUT, this time I would not use Balena Etcher,
but use Unetbootin instead! I've always gotten good results with Unetbootin, and have read many problems with
Etcher, especially in regards to booting Puppy. Also, may need to enter BIOS setup and check the boot device
sequence and put the USB drive first or second. From your screenshots, it looks like it is trying to boot from
SDA1 which is usually an internal drive. USB thumb drives are normally labeled SDB.

There was definitely something fucky about that image/usb drive.

Ripped the whole partition off and recreated it.

Then used UNetbootin.

Got a completely different menu this time (weird but true):

If I picked "default" I got the same error.

But if I picked the next one... which was just "BionicPup32 19.03" it gave me this error:

If I ran the next option: "BionicPup32 19.03 - Copy SFS files to RAM" it gave me this error:

Not sure it will solve your problem. But even with Unetbootin, I think you still have to edit the syslinux.cfg file it writes, https://oldforum.puppylinux.com/viewtop ... 9a#p851153.

There have been improvements in Unetbootin since that post. But I don't think those enable it to 'understand' Puppys. Someone can correct me if they do.

It actually did pick that up and change that to usbflash on it's own.

Hi gilligan8 !
Try to format the key in fat32 ( and not ext4 ) before using unetbootin.

Well at least we know your computer is finding the USB drive! So, if I read your first screenshot correctly, you have formatted the
USB drive as EXT4? If this is the case, you may need to start over and format the USB drive as FAT32...I know, it sounds weird,
but that is the format I've used with success. Besides, I move files from one computer to another with those USB sticks and
FAT32 allows my Windows systems to read/write to them! Unetbootin may be looking for FAT32 as well, so try that, then
"reburn" your Bionic iso with Unetbootin to your newly formatted USB thumb drive and try to boot with it!
Hopefully this will solve your boot problems. The main drawback to using FAT32 is that you can only utilize savefiles in
Puppy, not savefolders. But this will probably not be an issue, unless you plan on using more than 4 gigabytes (the max
file size in FAT32) for a savefile!

That's crazy.

It IS FAT32... this was all done in Windows... so not really able to format EXT4 (I don't have anything like that installed).

I've deleted the partition multiple times.

I've even tried Rufus now... DD moved and ISO mode... same as the first screen shot on each of these.

So far UNetbootin was the only one that gave me "different" results but still errors as shown.

I've even tried going down to 7.5 and it's giving me basically the same thing.

Hmm, well now...tell us exactly what CPU this computer has, as well as amount of RAM, type of hard drive (if any)...
it could be that this computer is just too old for Bionic, which means we need to try an older Puppy...something like
one of the older Slackos prior to version 7, or maybe TahrPup, something like that with an old 3 series kernel.
At least we may be able to get it to boot. Might not be able to browse the web much except for basic type sites,
and this one! Older Pups don't have the modern glibc that newer browsers need.

@Wiz57 & @gilligan8

I note the first snapshot on the thread mentions sda1 and ext4.

I have run (and am presently running the 32-bit Bionic pup on (1) Dell with P4M and (2) Desktop Pentium 4 with 500MiB RAM.
Dell has more RAM - 2GiB. 1.6GHz clock give sluggish (but useable) performance.
The desktop will boot with 500MiB - but needs more RAM to do more than boot.

As a test - you could try Precise Puppy 5.7.2 - just to confirm functionality.

Wiz asked for h/w setup of your PC. Yes - that's useful info.

It's an Acer Veriton... looks like it might be an Atom processor... that could be the kink!

That said, I do have LXLE running with the i386 32bit installer, so I might be wrong.

it's at my shop right now and I locked myself out of it playing with the network settings :)

I'll check tomorrow and report back.
