QPDF How to reinstall ?

Post by RZG01 »

I don't understand at all what I'm doing, but I've decided that I want to uninstall QPDF. So, I went to "Stup" "Remove builtin packages" and uninstalled it. I regretted it, so I went to Puppy's package manager and tried to reinstall QPDF. I tried several things but it didn't work.

At one point, the program opened but said "there was no plugin to open PDF".

Then it didn't open anymore. I went to the terminal and typed "qpdf", it replied that there was an error loading the library "libqpdf.so.29".

The qpdf packages are here:
https://packages.ubuntu.com/focal/qpdfview

I don't understand anything I'm doing, so "calm down". I'm starting in the Linux world. :D

Thanks

Which Puppy Linux are you using? How was it "installed"?

viewtopic.php?t=5813&hilit=whiteout+savefile

may give some insight into what happened when you used the used the "Remove builtin packages" utility.

as a beginner, you may find it easiest to create a new save file or folder.

can you boot without a savefile/folder and then rename the existing save to something like fossapup64save-old?
can you post a screenshot of the contents of your install folder?

:welcome: To Linux software!

See if this will get you back to a working QPDFview

First get uninstalled what you installed using the Puppy Package Manager (PPM).
Start PPM
Select the uninstall button
From the list of installed programs
Select the QPDFview
Select remove package
When removal completes close PPM.

Now let's get the original QPDFview working, that comes in Fossapup64 9.5
When you use the Remove Builtin Packages.
It does not actually remove them, but makes them so they are no longer seen by the operating file system.
This is because they are in a read only location and cannot be deleted.

This is how to restore anything you removed using Remove Builtin Packages.

This is some info you need to know:
viewtopic.php?t=1819

Note:
PPM has one problem, when getting software from non-Puppy specific repositories.
The software in these repositories were compiled for a different Linux OS.
The software usually is compatible with the Puppy version, but sometimes not everything needed is provided by the other Linux OS repository.
Usually some dependency file or program is not there. (why, because the other Linux OS already has it as part of it's original release).
You saw this when you got this error:

it replied that there was an error loading the library "libqpdf.so.29".

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.
When I was a kid, I wanted to be older.
This is not what I expected :o

Easiest way to replace the missing dependency would be to locate it in the original ISO, then simply copy it across to the matching location in your running Puppy. It must have been there originally, or else QPDF wouldn't have fired-up the first time round.

That's how I would tackle it.

Mike. ;)

To resolve this issue, you need to reinstall the PDF plugin for QPDF. This can typically be done by installing the "libqpdf21-plugin-pdf" package using Puppy's package manager. Also you may need to manually download and install the plugin from a trusted source.

It's also possible that there may be other underlying issues causing QPDF to not work properly. The user may want to try reinstalling QPDF completely or seeking assistance from a technical support forum or professional.
