Looking for a typing tutor program for Linux

Post by Les Kerf »

Is there a typing tutor program available for use in Linux? I have home-schooled grandchildren whom I would like to have learn correct typing technique (which I never learned). There are Windows based programs available but...

Klavaro is available from the PPM on Fossapup64-9.5. It's a small program. The menu entry is under Personal.
There is also a game - Tux Typing (search for tuxtype in the PPM).

On some newer Puppy variants (like dpup) the apt-get commands from https://linuxhint.com/best-typing-tutors-linux will work.

Thank you, I downloaded the Tux Typing and it works well on an older Lucid install I have; this looks like a good starting place.

This is NOT a typing tutor application.

This is a terminal application to test your typing accuracy.

Tested in Fossapup64-95

Going back a few years, before Puppies had largely gone down the 64-bit route, we used to recommend a small touch-typing app called "Tipp10". Unfortunately, it was only ever available as a 32-bit app.

I don't know if the source code was accessible; I never bothered looking for it, TBH. Compiling has always been one of my many "Achilles heels"!

However, they DO now have it available as a purely on-line tutorial. Create a free a/c, and it'll save your progress as you advance through the lesson-plan. I have it set up as a Chrome 'web-app', to launch in its own desktop window from a Menu entry...

I've used some old Edutainment DOS programs via DOSbox (babytype, Mario teaches typing, a few others) many which can be found on abandon-ware sites (legal limbo....unless you have the floppies in your closet of "not obsolete yet" stuff ;) )

GCompris has some BASIC typing modules: https://www.gcompris.net/index-en.html

TuxType isn't bad either.

The last two might just be an apt-get away

I can't find "letter invaders", which I used in my youth....I think it was a C64 program

The classic Mavis Beacon teaches typing Should work under dos\macOS\win32 emulation, but I can't find my old CD to test.

Runs on Fatdog64, not tried it elswhere.

You could also try out some of these:
