Chrome Browser is now in control of the Internet

Post by bigpup »

I know this has been posted about before.

But I have to let off some steam someplace :x

I just tried to log into my cell phone service account by using my computer.

I could not get it to log on.

I started a conversation with that online, click here for help, can we help you, person

After about 10 minutes of give and take messages.

I asked could my browsers cookie setting be causing this issue.

A short wait for an answer and I get back.

OH! you are using Firefox. :!:

You need to be using Chrome browser to be able to log in!

Used Chome browser and logged in with no problem. :( :x  :o :( :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!:

This is a result of lazy or inept web developers. Years ago there were a lot of sites coded to only use MS Internet Explorer.

@wizard :-

Believe it or not, Wiz, even today I still find the odd one that actually tells you at the top of the page that you MUST use Internet Exploder, 'cos it's been "optimized" for it! ('Optimized' for Trident.....gaaah.) God knows what these webmasters are doing.....IE is no longer supported AT ALL, so probably abandoned or 'forgotten' sites on a long-term VPN hosting a/c - long since paid for 'up-front' - that hasn't yet expired. Such sites are few and very far between these days, thankfully......but they're STILL hanging on by the skin of their teeth!

That's MY guess, anyway. Probably not far off the mark, at that...

I've seen this coming for years, TBH, but it doesn't bother me. Truthfully, I don't care what browser I use; so long as I can get online and do what I want to do, that'll do me. A browser's a browser as far as I'm concerned. I really couldn't care less what the "badge" says..!

This situation happens to me everyday when connecting at work.

I need chrome for everything, it's the same situation as years ago with Internet Explorer. This situation happens specially when u are working with "official documents", doing online activities with your goberment.

I really hate this situation, it makes me have chrome installed in my PC and I don't like impossitions.

Have a nice day.

This is a result of lazy or inept web developers. Years ago there were a lot of sites coded to only use MS Internet Explorer.

I was always concerned about cross-platform, cross-browser abilities of the web sites I made and spent a lot of time finding the right bits to achieve good page rendering on a broad range of browsers and systems. Takes a bunch of effort to do it. This forum is constatnly being tweaked to try to give all users all of the globe a decent expereince using our web presence. From Google-Chrome to SeaMonkey with waves of Firefox and palemoon......and even Dillo and the terminal ANSI graphic only text based terminal browsers like Lynx.

Seemed to me that was what a good programmer/developer would do.....unless it's all about total control and $$$$ just cutting out diversity and those pesky bothersome concepts like freedom of choice. Streamlined to fit one assembly line maintained by robots and hedge fund oligarchs.

:welcome: to the Machine......

We are Google!

We will control everything!

Resistance is futile!

We control your browser!

We control your web site!

You're traveling through another dimension, a dimension not only of sight and sound but of mind.
A journey into a wondrous land whose boundaries are that of total Google control!

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.

ChatGPT is another dark road down the path of total control.

It has a dark side to it!

It has already been found to make stuff up.

Give answers that are left leaning or refuse to even give an answer.

Seems just like humans.
It only knows what it has been given to learn.

There is a topic on ChatGPT

Chrome Browser is now in control of the Internet

Before yesterday, I would have agreed with you !

But, last night, the family chromebook received
an error message screen when attempting to try the
Peacock TV NBCUniversal website: https://www.peacocktv.com

(This unrelated website shows the cute "something went wrong"
error message HDMI cat picture that was displayed by Peacock on our chromebook:
https://www.nexttv.com/news/peacock-doe ... al-monitor
)

Helpful suggestions on the web suggest: use Firefox !

I am sorry to inform you that our Chromebook (which uses
the Chrome Browser version 103) is not a supported device for Peacock.

But Peacock does seem to work on our Windows 10 laptop
using the EDGE browser !

But I'm not looking for help, I'm just reporting a "Chrome Browser fact" !

@oldaolgeezer - I have both chrome & firefox (via Crostini) on my 2022 Chromebook to cover that - browser specificity is now happening a lot.

ChatGPT

There is talk of this ChatGPT everywhere  Even Tomas (the author of Slax) jokes about it on his blog:

New version of Slax is available, and I take the opportunity to use ChatGPT to let AI generate an announcement about it. Here it is! :-)

You all create advertising for all this yourself. And the scheme is the same. 1. "I will not use this Evil!" 2. "Oh... This technology is so modern and everyone uses it... I should try it too..."

Funny, that is not what they say at Peacock web site help!

Peacock is available across a variety of devices.

Web Browsers:
Chrome 95+ (Windows/Mac)
Firefox 88+ (Windows/Mac)
MS Edge 95+ (Windows/Mac)
Safari 12+ (Mac)

But this is not the first time, a browser update broke the browser, for something it did work on.

@wiak :-

Google, of course - despite the Chromium Project and its parental role to Chrome being public knowledge - still like to pretend that they have developed Chrome completely off their own bat. Look at the sheer number of ordinary Windows users who seem to think that Chromium derives from Chrome.....that Chrome is the parent of all, when in fact Chrome itself is simply another 'clone' forked-off from the open-source Project.

Says it all, doesn't it?

(Although I myself am not Scottish - I was born in Islington, so technically a Cockney, though the family moved to South Yorkshire when I was very small, before moving down to Norfolk when the old man's firm sent him there in the late 60s - my ex- was an Edinburgh lass. Born at the lower end of Princes Street, so she told me, and her family had lived in the same house for four generations.)

But this is not the first time, a browser update broke the browser, for something it did work on.

It's a classic scenario. Right Hand "What are we doing", Left Hand "I have no idea". Even the biggest and best of companies fail to communicate and update their help files and documentation in a timely manner, and it's infuriating.

Yes, whether professional or personal, closed-source or open, these problems exists and will continue until we arrive at one-consciousness.

That probably wont happen though as nature shows constant reconfigurations as well.

I haven't been in Edinburgh since 2004. Last time I was in Scotland was 2010...

I was born over the bridge and up country further: Perth and Kinross-shire (in the latter).
Original university days in Edinburgh centre.

I remember around 2000 when some websites claimed they would only work with IE.

Then that monopoly broke, and they had to support Firefox, too.

And now the OP notes that some are back to "monopoly thinking" with Chrome.

Ugh!!

Bigpup - whenever you get an issue like this send an email to the company (or administrators) whose services you are trying to use.

Let them know that you are unable to connect because their programmers have chosen to support only a single browser.

Explain that you are unable to use that browser due to your IT department rules (yes I know that you are your own IT department :-) )

Explain that your IT department requires your device to be reset each day (for security reasons) and does not allow information to be shared with GoogleAnalytics.

When they ask you what browser you use - politely refuse to tell them and explain that you work in a high security zone and are unable to share that sort of information.

Ask them to update you (in writing) urgently when the recent changes will be rolled back.

Keep re-sending complaints daily for one week.

If they don't sort out the issue go somewhere else. (OK this won't work for Netflix but it has worked for me with banking websites and online trading sites so far...)

These days websites can serve different versions of their webpages on a "per user" basis - so they have no problem making things work for you as long as you keep letting them know what works and what does not.

28 february 2023 I wrote a post about this theme , and I agree with your oppinions about the priviledged position of chrome when talking about nowaday browsers.

Knowing this, I use chrome without using it, haha, how is this possible? Using Slimjet, an improved chrome "derivative".

Advantages of slimjet over google chrome

Slimjet is a web browser that is based on the Chromium open-source project, just like Google Chrome.

While both browsers share many similarities, there are several advantages of Slimjet over Google Chrome:

Privacy: Slimjet has enhanced privacy features compared to Google Chrome. It includes built-in ad-blockers, pop-up blockers, and anti-tracking features, which help protect your online privacy.

Customizability: Slimjet allows users to customize the browser interface with a range of themes and skins. It also includes a range of customization options such as mouse gestures, keyboard shortcuts, and customizable toolbars.

Faster browsing: Slimjet is designed to be faster than Google Chrome in terms of loading web pages and executing JavaScript.

Resource-efficient: Slimjet is more resource-efficient than Google Chrome, which means it uses fewer system resources and can run on older hardware.

Security: Slimjet includes built-in security features such as automatic HTTPS conversion, phishing protection, and a password manager.

Productivity: Slimjet includes a range of productivity tools such as a built-in PDF reader, screen capture tool, and a customizable quick-search bar.

Integrated mouse gestores.

Overall, Slimjet offers a range of advantages over Google Chrome, particularly in terms of privacy, customizability, speed, resource efficiency, security, and productivity, and the most important for me....

I'm using a CHROMIUM based browser.

I have all chrome advantages, addons...

But I'M NOT USING GOOGLE CHROME.

Try it and add your oppinion.... chrome is the leader but I don't want to increase its number of users!

Yeah, I tried it long time ago, and I must reconognize Min is Better than slimjet when u are only thinking about SPEED and open source, that means that you can edit adapt it and colaborate in its developement, but I chose slimjet over min, because slimjet has a richest feature set:

It includes a built-in ad blocker, a download manager, and a customizable toolbar.

It also has a wide range of customization options for the interface, shortcuts, and more.

Compatibility: Slimjet is built on the Chromium engine, which means it is compatible with most web applications and sites. This is important for me, because I need to access web-based applications for my work and personal use.

Stability: Slimjet is known for its stability and reliability. It is less prone to crashes and freezes than some other browsers, which is important for me because I need to rely on my browser for work or other tasks.

Built-in tools: Slimjet includes a range of built-in tools that make browsing easier and more efficient. For example, it includes a screen capture tool, a translation tool, and a weather tracker.

Extension compatibility: Slimjet is compatible with most Chrome extensions, which means every user have access to a wide range of third-party tools and enhancements., compatibility with web applications, stability, built-in tools, and extension compatibility make it a strong choice if u need a browser that can handle a range of tasks and applications.

As I said, I use other browsers (mainly Firefox and Opera) but slimjet is my first one.

Thanks for your suggestion.

Thanks for that info on Slimjet.

I will look it over and see what it may be able to do.

Slimjet is not Google free.

Notice what it says in this option for setting up privacy and security settings.

Aha, so... could be possible / legal make an ungloogled slimjet versión to be used with puppy (like the portable ungoogled chromium)?.

I'll answer myself....NO, because slimjet is not free but proprietary software, but it could be fantastic.... and dreaming is free, 🤣

Meanwhile, you can do like I do when I want to disallow google ... install any of these addons:

Privacy Badger: Developed by the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), Privacy Badger blocks third-party trackers and cookies and "can" help prevent Google from tracking your online activities.

uBlock Origin: This popular ad-blocking extension can also block Google Analytics scripts, which can help prevent Google from collecting data about your browsing habits.

Decentraleyes: This extension helps prevent Google and other content delivery networks (CDNs) from tracking your browsing habits by serving popular JavaScript libraries locally instead of requesting them from a CDN.

Google Analytics Opt-out Add-on: This official add-on from Google allows you to opt-out of Google Analytics tracking on all websites.

But you must have in mind that using these extensions may affect the functionality of some websites that rely on Google services, and may not provide complete protection from all forms of tracking because we don't know all the techniques that google use to STEAL us (Google depends on it, so they take care of retain us into ignorance).
