Hello
I have Xenial64 on a Dell E6230. There is also Win10 and another Xenial.
I am trying to install other Puppies to try but have a problem when trying to install a boot loader as menu.lst is read only. I dont know why, but can I change it to not being read only.
Help appreciated.
Thanks

Re: Menu.lst is read only problem
Hi:
I don't know this can solve your problem but I solved this situations really easy, you only need to right click on menu lst, choose properties, and configure permissions.
I case u tryed this and doesn't work, I have no idea, sorry....

Re: Menu.lst is read only problem
I'm using xenialpup 7.5 too, I have it since 2018 so its possible I installed programs to do this, but its possible you need to addapt RIGHT CLICK options.
You can search for pets for puppy here: https://archive.org/download/Puppy_Linux_Forum_Pets and I think RIGHT CLICK OPTIONS pet can help you to configure it.
More info about this pet at: https://wikka.puppylinux.com/Right-click_menu_options
As I told u, it is possible I am using some specific option to edit propierties of files, but I can remember which one.
Is possible another use can give u a better solution. I hope this.
Cheers

Re: Menu.lst is read only problem
Tell us more about installing the boot loader.....was Windows already on the machine and able to boot? Is the partition NTFS formatted for Windows?
This could be a factor as to why the menu.lst is read-only. I was able to install Grub4Dos on a NTFS partition and successfully dual boot Puppy's and Windows on a DELL INSPIRON 1505e laptop which is still working well but is only 32 bit capable.
Re: Menu.lst is read only problem
Hi @number77 !
Had once a similar/same Problem....... got it working (made Partition writable)..... but can no longer exactly remember how i did.
Could have something to do with Fast Startup enabled in Windows (Settings)
Maybe have a look here :
Answer probably can be found here.

Hello rockedge.
Not sure how what I did for the boot loader but I think I installed win10 to first partition on ssd, then installed grub4dos to find my Xenial partitions
Re: Menu.lst is read only problem
Just tried something, I had old menu.lst which was not read only. I replaced the two files then grub4dos ed it and now working perfectly and not read only.
I am not sure what I did but think it had something to do with the win10 install as this has never been a problem before.

Re: Menu.lst is read only problem
Last time you used Windows 10.
Did you do a normal complete shutdown or hibernate shutdown?
Make sure to do a complete normal shutdown of Windows 10.
If it shuts down in hibernate.
It will not fully release control of drive!
The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.
When I was a kid, I wanted to be older.
This is not what I expected
