Unable to re-install gpg via Sysnaptic pm(SOLVED)

Post by soniabu »

Hello everybody.
as I was unable to encrypt a document, I tried to re-install gpg via Sysnaptic pm;
but it returns me the following error with i don't know how to fix.
If anyone can suffer a road from me, I will be grateful to them.

here detail:

@Sonia: What is your objective? To simply encrypt some files for your own personal security? Or to send them across the Internet using a full public/private key procedure?

for now just for my safety, currently I don't need to send on the internet.
They are personal files that I wanted to encrypt. I could also use cryptomator
but as the default is gpg in the system I thought it would be useful to use the latter.

rcrsn51 wrote: Wed Oct 21, 2020 9:43 pm PeasyCrypt starts with a single file or directory structure of files. It compresses the data into one file and encrypts it with Ccrypt. The dependencies are ccrypt and lzop.
lzop has a fixed 9 byte magic number. ccrypt even provides a tool to 'crack' its password if you forget it. The combination was 'good enough' in time-passed, less so with time.

Even knowing just a small part of the clear text content in a encrypted sequence can dramatically reduce the time required to crack the encryption. When you think about it, secure (encrypted) internet traffic pre-cursored with a dns lookup, when google can see both, and they could also access the same web page clear text to at least gain a insight into the encryption key (encrypted data + them retrieving the clear text content as indicated by the IP/DNS => key). Perhaps why google would prefer everyone used their 8.8.8.8 dns server array.

My "enemy" is not Google but my wife: if you want to be "secured" from your wife Peasycrypt should be enough. I was fast enough to download it even though I usually use the old truecrypt.

@soniabu

looks like one PERL module is missing. Do you have the devx sfs loaded? If so then a simple cpan install or better yet cpanminus (cpanm) of the module will fix it.
In a terminal try:

Code: Select all

cpan App::cpanminus
cpan Gtk3
or:

Code: Select all

cpan install Gtk3

Hi Rock ,

I used the second terminal command: ... but when I re-install gpg I always give me same error: E: initramfs-tools: installed initramfs-tools package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 126
E: cryptsetup-initramfs: dependency problems - leaving unconfigured

I'll run through an install of gpg to see what's happening. It looks like more PERL modules can not be built because of some missing libraries....let's see if we can track them down!

@sonia and @rockedge, the "Can't locate Gtk3.pm in @INC" warning from synaptic is harmless.
The failed re-install of gpg that sonia experienced cannot have to do with it.
BTW, I cannot reproduce it on Fossadog (I assume it's the OS we're talking about, yes?), re-installing gpg went fine for me.

@sonia, I am using FossaDog-2020-09-19_64-bit-UEFI.iso, you too ?
The "installed initramfs-tools package post-installation script subprocess returned error" is a bad error, looks like something went wrong in your FD install.
EDIT: your output shows: " /usr/sbin/update-initramfs: Permission denied" Can you check that file if it's executable or not ? (it should be) or some other reason that you can think of why the "Permission denied"

EDIT: FYI, the gtk3 perl module can be in installed with synaptic or apt:

Code: Select all

apt install libgtk3-perl
(so no need to use cpan for that)

Firstly, thanks Fred for your kind concern.
So my SO is:

****
/usr/sbin/update.initramfs in properties was non-exec; now set it to exec.
***
Now I re-install libgtk3-perl and then try to re-install gpg and see what it does.
I keep you informed.
thanks again sonia
