bugs in vanailla pup and void pup.

Post by Jadm »

Hey everyone, its been a long time ( about 3-4 years)! I am a returning Puppy Linux user, and man things seem to have changed while I was gone. So I have found a few bugs in the new puppies I have tried and thought I would share them in hopes the maintainers can fix them. I also just had a few thought I would chime in on.

1st the bugs because those are important to fix.

1) this is the BIG one, void pup does not come with “mtools” pre installed, this makes it impossible to install grub (because grub requires a Fat32 file system, thus dooming the install to fail which would cause a lot of head aches for the new Linux users that are some times driven to puppy :’(.

2) none of the current main line puppies seem to work with ventoy, I seen others where talking about it in the forums like it worked. I am using eufi ventoy though, could that be why ?

3) vanilla pup will not load the proper amdgpu driver for my gaming pc, I tried installing a new one and every thing no luck, I do have two gpus so maybe that is it ? One is the integrated graphics the other is a rx6600.

These are more of opinion then a “bug”( but the first one did confuse me) ..

also both the puppies have removed or disabled the full install, I understand that this does not work with eufi, but I could see why some one would still want to use this, you know for old Pcs. ( just my opinion though maybe put it in an “ advanced installer” or something ?)

On another note while I have been gone I have started, and almost finish an associates in computer science, so I plan to start helping keeping puppy Linux great! I really like the move that both vanilla Dpup and void pup are taking in changing package managers. While I think I will miss pkg and pets, it was a move that needed to happen a long time ago ( just my opinion).

Hi @Jadm

Here is a new test build of VoidPup64 with mtools added:
https://github.com/peabee/woof-CE/relea ... .02-210123

Future releases will also have mtools.

Full install is still there - it's just "hidden" to make it difficult to use:

Code: Select all

# to enable full install to hdd (before running this script - puppyinstaller):
# export ENABLE_FULLINSTALL=1

Builder of LxPups, SPups, UPup32s, VoidPups; LXDE, LXQt, Xfce addons; Chromium, Firefox etc. sfs; & Kernels

Hey @rcrsn51 , so for context I'm a returning. Puppy Linux users from about 8 years or so ago ... So there's multiple ways to install puppy Linux ( or there use to be any ways). You have the frugal install which is actually the most common way this is where all the files from the USB is copied to the hard drive and a save file is created.. then there (or was any ways) the full install that would install puppy Linux uncompressed ( much more like a a normal Linux install). My understanding is that full install wasn't working with uefi ( sorry about the previous typo) so it was removed. As you see from the information about though, it's not been removed just "hidden"..
