S15Pup64-22.12+1-T not able to boot from install on USB drive (solved)

Post by kris777 »

I have the same effect when flashing the latest PuppyLinux.
I recorded on two different mini SD cards (e.g. sandisk extreme 32GB) + USB adapter .... the cards are operational because I recorded different linux distros on them, e.g. Mint 21 / Debia / Ubuntu / CloneZilla etc. and booting from the pendrive was always correct, i.e. live systems booted OK???
programs for burning ISO to USB are:
USBimager / mintstick / balena etcher / also terminal program dd !!!
My OS is : Linux Mint 21 based on Ubuntu 22.04
Older versions of Puppy linux worked OK ????
i tried the latest version : S15Pup64-22.12+1-T.iso
https://sourceforge.net/projects/spup/files/S15Pup64/
Is there something wrong with the latest ISO images for flash drives?
I checked two mini sd/usb adapters
and also all the usb ports on my laptop that had only one flash drive with Puppylinux connected
the dd recording command is:

Code: Select all

dd bs=4M if=/home/kris/Pulpit/S15Pup64-22.12+1-T.iso of=/dev/sdb status=progress

I have two operating systems LinuxMint / Windows 10 and I do not use uefi only older type dos my laptop is also old Samsung R780
ps.
As far as I remember, by saving the Puppylinux ISO file to the usb in this way, I will not get a working PuppyLinux system with saving to the flash drive, but
although the syatem should start and then you can create one from Puppy's live system itself ... am I right?
Well, I just gave up.
But I installed another system on usb: EasyOS and it's OK ( works on the same settings i.e. mini sd card (sandisk) / usb adapter / any usb port ) :thumbup2:
easy-4.5-amd64.img https://distro.ibiblio.org/easyos/amd64 ... /2022/4.5/
:D :D :D
ps2:
Strange but I installed the ISO image (S15Pup64-22.12+1-T.iso) from Windows10 prog. Rufus / parsistance option / patch old bios ...and usb PuppyLinux booted but unable to save system sessions! From PuppyLinux System menu: /Applications/setup/stickpup-usb stick installer
I reinstalled the system on the same usb and now everything works, also the write option.
But why can't this be done from a Linux OS????
same i have with PuppyLinux FossaPup64 9.5 / Ubuntu Focal 64 x86_64 64-bit version from official site

Re: FossaPup64 9.5 / S15Pup64-22.12+1-T not able to boot from install on USB drive

Read this topic:
viewtopic.php?t=157

Read the part about maybe having to edit the boot menu entry that will be on the USB install.

I suggest you use Unetbootin to do the install to USB.
Use the Fossapup64 9.5 ISO or S15Pup ISO, you downloaded, as the source.
(The USB stick does need to have one partition and it formatted fat32)

Unetbootin will do an install that will allow putting a save file on the USB.

If the computer has UEFI bios.
Before trying to boot Puppy, you need to disable secure boot in the UEFI setup.
This is because, Puppy ISO's do not have the needed files, to install the needed Puppy security key, for secure boot.
Just as the computer powers on, should be a specific F key or escape key, that pressed, will bring up the UEFI bios setup.
Some place in it, will be option for secure boot enable/disable. Look for a security section.

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.
When I was a kid, I wanted to be older.
This is not what I expected :o

S15Pup64-22.12+1-T not able to boot from install on USB drive

I don't know why Unetbootin installed the system wrong the first time?
Now it's OK .... but you have to remember about the option : permanent storage. So on Linux operating systems, the PuppyLinux ISO writing program (simple way) must be Unetbootin.
Thanks for the information
