Barrier-share your mouse and keyboard

Post by wizard »

This howto was created using Fossapup64 9.5, but may work on other modern Pups. This was done quickly, so some steps might not be needed and you might be able to use Auto config on the Client. Feel free to experiment.

Note: if your router is using DHCP (normally the case) your computers may be be assigned different IP addresses if rebooted or if there is a power loss.

Barrier KVM

Barrier is a software KVM program that allows you to use one keyboard/mouse to control two or more computers.

Setup for two computers running Fossapup64 9.5
-both computers must be on the same network subnet (the normal case)
-install Barrier on both computers from the PPM

One computer will be the Server (the computer that you use its keyboard/mouse), the other computer will be the Client. In this example the Server is a desktop and the Client is a laptop positioned to the right of the Server.

Client Setup:
-open Barrier from Menu>Utility>Barrier
-click: Client
-uncheck: Auto config
-enter IP address of the Server
-click: Barrier on the menu bar
-click: Change Settings
In the Network section:
-disable SSL
-enter IP address of the Client
-click: OK

-Shutdown Barrier from the menu bar (not the X)
-restart Barrier
-if it does not show “running” in the lower left, click: Start

Server Setup:
-open Barrier from Menu>Utility>Barrier
-click: Server
-click: Barrier on the menu bar
-click: Change Settings
In the Network section:
-disable SSL
-enter IP address of the Server
-click: OK
-click: Configure Server
Your Server computer will be in the center of the grid
-drag and drop the computer icon from the top right to the box next to the Server
-double click the Unnamed icon

-in the Screen name box enter the Client computer name
-click: OK
-click: OK
-Shutdown Barrier from the menu bar (not the X)
-restart Barrier
-if it does not show “running” in the lower left, click: Start

You should now be connected to the Client, when you move the mouse off the right side of the Server screen, it will appear on the Client screen. Both mouse and keyboard are now controlling the Client. To return to the Server, just move the mouse past the left edge of the Client.

Big pile of OLD computers
