Palemoon, Pulldown unreadable. (SOLVED)

Post by peppyy »

I know I had this issue before, however I can't remember how to fix it
I am running 31.4.0 64 as an update to Palemoon Portable.
The only thing I can find on the palemoon forum is about themes, which I have no themes installed.
The troubleshooting page says that I have browser.display.use_system_colors set to true. It also does this on pages where I have more than one login choice.

Any ideas?

@peppyy :-

Strange. My Pale Moon is functioning fine.

Image

I vaguely recall when all this began happening a few years ago it was down to GTK+ 3.0 support, but AFAIK, Fossapup64 has this built-in OOTB.....so it can't be that.

Was it just this update that's triggered it? Mind you, I'm on 31.4.1; perhaps update, and check again?

Mike. ;)

This may be related to an issue with "padding" code in the phpBB software itself, something referenced in the palemoon forums here:
https://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.ph ... 11#p234545

The "fix" is for changes to be made to the site itself AFAICT. Haven't used Pale Moon much of late, so other than that I'm not sure,
doubtful it is WebComponents in javascript this time! Search through the Pale Moon forum under Web Compatiblity, might find
something in that sub-forum.

I've seen the same thing at times that occurred on several different palemoon versions. All the tool-tips were unreadable having dark characters on a dark background. It was a CSS fix for Chrome that fixed it a few times but recently I saw it on palemoon running on KLV

@mikewalsh I did find an update to 31.4.1. Didn't do anything as far as this problem goes. I searched the "Old forum" when I had the problem last time, however I may not have all the keywords correct?

@rockedge I will look into that. Perhaps it was something to do with gtk or another requirement? I will also look into "about:config" and see if anything has changed recently. Thanks for the "Tooltip" reference.

I remember that it probably has to do with the gtk theme the desktop is using, and I have fixed this by doing something in a CSS file in /etc/gtk-2 or /etc/gtk-3 or similar.

Hi peppyy:

I might be describing a different issue, but:

I may, to use an old canine expression, be "barking up the wrong tree" but
I have noticed in recent Palemoon usage, when I move my mouse to, for example,
a login in "click on area", an all black "window" drops down.

I've found that if I just move my mouse pointer slowly over the "black window",
I can now read each of, are they called, "suggestions" and click on the one I want.
(if my "list of suggestions" is long, there will be a "slider" to allow
scrolling the "black area" list.)

(I think that months or even years ago, such little window's items could be viewed
immediately without the effort with my mouse. Perhaps this was a
"security" feature introduced to prevent someone looking over your shoulder from
immediately reading the items in your list.)

If this is your issue too, maybe my comment may give a clue about both
what this behavior is really called and what could be changed.

Hope this helps.

Try changing the GTK theme you are using.

Running Fossapup64.
I can change the GTK theme and it affects the background color of the pull downs in Pale Moon.

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.

@oldaolgeezer That is exactly what it does.

@bigpup I have only Numix, numix-dusk and numix-sun available in the jwm desk manager under GTK. It doesn't seem to make a difference which one I use.

EDIT! When I go to JWM Theme and click on toggle dark mode, everything is readable. I will do some more investigation.

Hello peppyy,

Is Palemoon running as root or as spot?

There used to be an issue with browsers in earlier Pups when they moved to GTK3, but GTK3 theme support was not provided very well in Puppy. Nowadays I think it is satisfactory in Woof-CE and I thought it was OK in FossaPup.

I recall the issue involved dark and unreadable tooltips, but I am not sure if the dropdowns are tooltips, so this may be something different anyway.

What I suggest is look at /root/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini
Or /root/spot/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini (if running as spot)

If present, these will take priority over /etc/gtk-3.0/settings.ini but you may want to look at that as well

Have a look at the line gtk-theme-name = Whatever
Try manually editing this line to gtk-theme-name = Default
(This should be a basic theme but with everything clearly visible and was a fix for the issue previously)
If you can see other gtk3 themes installed and available, you can try those in place of "Default"
Always restart X after editing to see any changes

You can find some GTK themes here to add to what can be selected:

@bigpup Downloaded https://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/p ... 121106.pet and tried "Stardust". Worked perfectly. Might try a few more just for fun. Thank you!

@peppyy :-

Zigbert's "Stardust" was a long-standing favourite of mine.....until my eyesight deteriorated to the point where I now need to use dark themes, following permanent damage to the back of the eyeballs due to the nature of my work several years ago.

And it looks good, too!

Mike. ;)

@bigpup Out of curiosity I see these are noarch. Do most of the pets in noarch work with fossa64?

All of the noarch repo packages should work. The "no architecture" means the package is not distro specific.

Does anyone know which, if any, of the themes here are gtk3? Note to future theme creators: it would be helpful if a distinguishing characteristic appeared in the name, such as gtk3_theme_bazaar_purple-1.7. Old gtk themes wouldn't have such designation; so new gtk2 themes wouldn't have to; and without the 3 designation you'll know its a 2.
