F96_4-CE 4th Gen Dev Tester with a New Kernel 6.0.9 Made for F96

F96_4-CE has a brand new kernel 6.0.9 compiled last night. The fixes from @radky 's F96_3-radkyCE are not completely in this version yet so I am going to try out radky's version with the fixes and improvements with this kernel in the next hours, to see how the kernel performs in this scenario.

• This kernel has both AUFS6 and Overlayfs built in.

• SMP PREEMPT DYNAMIC

• KVM virtualization support is built in.

• NTFS and FAT32 read and write support built in.

• Lz4 and zstd compression support enabled

Firmware (fdrv_fossapup64_9.6.sfs) is constructed from a Debian derived kernel build using @fredx181 's script for making KLV kernels. Which I then modified for use in F96 by moving /usr/lib/firmware to /lib/firmware and squashing the result into the fdrv

Using QEMU and running F96_4-CE in a virtual machine I have noticed that there is a double mouse cursor. This makes using F96 awkward in QEMU in the VNC mode. Using TigerVNC client to talk to QEMU's VNC server and the F96 virtual machine works very well.

To fix this add to the QEMU command line arguments : -usb -usbdevice tablet

UPDATE: F96_3-radkyCE is stable and very fast with the F96 kernel 6.0.9

I tested @BarryK 's Osmo build for EasyOS with the Contacts functions working in F96_4-CE and I can report after one small library (libhtml) was installed via PPM, it started right up and all Osmo systems are a GO for launch.

I will have to make sure this gets into the next release.

radky's F96 has the window shade function working with the mouse scroll wheel. Big feature returned! I'll have to inquire how to fix this as well!!

I would encourage members to test out the new builds and give feedback.

Personally, I have some issues with some sites (awful ISP), however you can easily download the files using terminal if you have a Certificate issue.

Hello.

I am testing F96_4-CE by rockedge.

Here are my observations:
1. While it is booting, some messages which we don't usually see are displayed. Even though those messages don't affect the performance of the OS, I don't want them displayed.

2. I booted, set the timezone to localtime (not utc) and shutdown without creating a save file. When I booted another Puppy, the clock showed the wrong time.

3. We cannot use an IME with Chrome running on Fossapup64 9.6. This issue does not happen on Fossapup64 9.5.

Booted the ISO files for both the 'CE' as well as the 'radky' versions of F96_4 on QEMU as well as on bare-metal via SG2D without issuess to desktop

The Puppy Desktop app is different between these 2 PUPs even though they are in the same family.

Ideas

• I offer an idea: IN the radky version, it has an button for Conky. Also, @ETP has a PET for Conky that provides a menu addition to toggle Conky ON and OFF. Could both be built-in on an upcoming version? (@ETP contributions are in the main forum's "Fossapup User Contributed Packages")

• Lastly, for the Fossa-type distros, knowing that later distros versions have emerged, could BTOP be added to the Repo For its ability to show a greater more granular bit of information about system behavior on a single screen. which is a quite more helpful to any of us who have used it. BTOP is much more helpful at a glance than both TOP/HTOP

The port release for UDP does not work, as shown in http://forum.puppylinux.com/viewtopic.p ... 81d#p73220 .
TCP-portś works as expected.

In the /usr/sbin/firewall_ng script, when I move lines 1185 and 1186

\$IPT -A udp_inbound -p UDP -j RETURN
\$IP6T -A udp_inbound -p UDP -j RETURN

after the "custom extras" at "The rest!" then iptables -v -L shows the correct order and my network scanner is happy.

Might not be clean since UDP rules and TCP rules are mixed up. On the other hand, they are also with the "custom extras".
I don't have any experience with creating scripts, so I can't say if that breaks anything else.

I don't know if this is the right place to post this. Bionicpup64, for example, is also affected.
On the other hand, a new Puppx with many improvements is currently being created here.

Using a uniform issue format should also help the devs.

Note, Gnumeric, if an issue needs images you can open a new tab and just drag and drop from Rox. You can do dynamic resizing and then make reference to the image in the issue tab. You can also make an internal hyperlink to the image if you want to get sophisticated. Have to do images sparingly since file size can get to big.

Following the failure of Gen 3 to boot on my ASUS laptop I thought I'd have a go with the Gen 4 release. This version doesn't hang like the earlier vesion, it boot to desktop. The internal touchpad however doesn't work. Using a USB mouse/keyboard, i completed set up created save and rebooted. I still have no touchpad, but internal keyboard is working. Apart from the touchpad, all so far seems OK. Posting from it with Palemoon.

I checked /var/log/Xorg.0.log, there were no entries relating to my laptop hardware (ASU0A:00 04F3:3134), normally there are entries for keyboard.mouse, touchpad, in the Xorg.0.log. The output from xinput shown below shows no reference to the ASUS specific hardware.

Just wanted to mention that there are alternatives to red-shift. https://www.forum.puppylinux.com/viewto ... 3107#p3107. Not sure what would be involved to implement them.

Conman is a mixed blessing. It is the easiest and fastest application by which to establish a wifi connection. On the other hand, in addition to the issues wizard noted I have these:

(1) There is no way to unhide the password being entered. The most often location from which an internet connection is sought is NOT a public one. By now most people will have long, complex passwords. Simple typing mistakes are not evident and will lead to long, frustration filled minutes of attempting to resolve a problem whose solution would be obvious if the typed password could be shown.
(2) I am compelled to use a wifi extender, a device which relays the wifi signals broadcast by the router. My router broadcasts two, one of which is 5G that carries more information but produces a weaker signal. The extender amplifies those signals before relaying them under different names. In other words, my computer's wifi adapters see 4 networks all of which are under my control. Which one provides the strongest signal at any time depends on interference from other close-by networks (channels? being used by neighbors). Most frequently, the strongest signal is the not-5G generated by the extender. Because two are relays, to access them requires the same password as the direct signals. They present, however, as 'open networks'.

Conman does not have any option to enter a password for such 'open' signals; nor to set the password for a direct network, disconnect from it and connect to its 'relayed' twin. Other wifi controlling applications do.

(3) You might think the work-around to problem 2 would just be to install frisbee or Simple Network System and/or, if necessary, the network wizard to 'call' them. That doesn't work. Or at least not OOTB. They won't appear on the menu, EVER. Something is either missing or conman prevents their installation. I'll investigate further. But if my sometimes flaky and as yet still further encumbered by cobwebs memory is correct, dimkr has mentioned conman can not co-exist with at least one of the other applications.

If the above can not be resolved, then I would argue that conman's advantages are over-weighed by its disadvantages.

I agree. One plus is that conman can connect 2 ethernet cards simultaneously which the other Puppy's could not. But the lack of controls is limiting overall. And I still tend to think Networkmanager might be the way to go.

I have also compiled a new version of kernel -> 6.0.9-rock SMP PREEMPT DYNAMIC that has better tablet and touchpad support hopefully. I am testing this kernel and so far it is performing well in F96-CE

I installed Frisbee and it does have some issues.
1. Does not show in Menu (didn't show in F95 either),
-edit /usr/share/applications/frisbee.desktop
-remove: Nodisplay=true
-restart jwm

2. Loads slowly, be patient

Have used it to change from ethernet to wifi and it works, but doesn't seem to talk to tray icon. You can check with Menu>System>IPinfo

@bigpup Important point, and eventually these packages need to be added to the woof-CE Fossapup recipe to standardize the woof-CE so the builds like F96 using the Focal Fossa 64 bit selections can include the newest stable versions.

I see this Puppy version is using all kinds of new software for providing sound.

I also see there seems to be no help for how to use it or I have not found anything providing help information.

I tried to figure out how to get sound output from my headphone.
Nothing I have tried will make this happen.
But that is the problem.

Am I doing what needs to be done to select the output device and what device is providing the sound?

I have done something to no longer be able to have my analog device as the provider of sound.
At first, before trying to change settings, analog device was in the selection list.
Now it is not.

Update:
I figured out how to get the sound by my headset, but it was not by understanding what needed to be done.
I just kept trying things.

I did this preferences setting in the Volume Control.
But how would I know that clicking on an icon that is identified as: Set AS Fallback would make it work?

I wonder if Conman would be the better choice if a decent GUI control and configuration option was much better? Since it does not yet appear so it makes sense to open up the connection options and methods with the standard Puppy networking tools.

I will be running this version today and looking at a way to merge or leave this version as the base to work from going forward.

My thinking about having ConnMan.
If it works as well as it has so far for me, keep it.
It is very easy to use.

But what if you need more setting options?

The Network Wizard has the ability to make settings for everything you can think of.

I suggest ConnMan be the default network connection program.

Have Network Wizard as an optional connection program, for those who may need to have setting options.
