I think S15Pup is "good to go" ?? ............ so what will probably happen is that version 22.12 will be released after 1/12/22 with updated kernels .......... what happens after that with regards to DW is up to @wanderer and @01micko

Questions: Is thisdistro series to become the modern version replacement for

  • ScPUP64?

  • SLACKO64?

  • Something new altogether?

@peebee - I agree - S15Pup64 is good to go! Are you likely to change the init (for those readers unaware, is inside initrd.gz)?

@peebee - 22.12 works well. One query - the iso & wallpaper have mixed case (S15Pup), whereas the drvs are all now lowercase.

VLC now version 3.0.18
Compiled from source in S15Pup and packaged as .pet
Uploaded for testing
http://smokey01.com/OscarTalks/vlc-3.0. ... 4-s15p.pet (64bit)
http://smokey01.com/OscarTalks/vlc-3.0.18-i686-s15p.pet (32bit)

NOTE:- The VLC website has a security bulletin saying that some vulnerabilities in earlier versions are fixed in 3.0.18
Users should decide how relevant such things are, but anyway, with S15Pup now released and a Distrowatch candidate I think it is nice to have this version available for it.

Re: S15Pup - Discussion

Post by Clarity »

Booting the ISO file via SG2D boots to desktop with a couple of subtle desktop differences on the oldest of my test rigs.

  • 1st, after hitting enter on the S15's Menu, it took eons after its 1st 'searching' message to get to the first SFS success. And other messages were slow emerging as well as the system progressed to PUP's desktop.

  • Next the trashcan is missing when arrinving at desktop

Edit: The trashcan and other icons have emerged. I did not notice before posting. Sorry for that confusion on my part

Upon desktop all is well as expected.

Further the popping feedback noise continues on this rig. This time, there, again, is a subtle difference. Its not just activating the Line parm in Retrovol, but activating it OR mic OR aux, either will also stop the popping. As mentioned before, clicking to turn the speaker on/off does not impact this popping noise. The noise seems to suggest it is trying to start some peripheral but keeps trying as it goes POP-POP...wait...pop-pop, continuously until one of the 3 parms are activated.

NONE of the items mentioned in this post has ANY negative impact on this distro's behavior! On desktop,it is as speedy as ever.

@OscarTalks VLC installs and is working! Thanks. Will your VLC PETs for this and other PUPs land in WoofCE repos?

Apologies - +0 had some original Slackware-15.0 components........... +1 is uploaded to update to latest

Suggest anybody with +0 uses the delta to update it - and keep the +0 iso as future updates will use it.

@dimkr says the "old xlockmore package doesn't support DPMS and eats battery life of old laptops with bad batteries"

Anybody having problems with xlockmore?? It can be updated to a petbuild in the +2 release if necessary.

S15Pup is now on Woof-CE.........

Thanks for getting this together peebee! :D

Running s15pup64_22.12, I downloaded the latest Woof-CE, woof-CE-testing-2022-12-08-01:13:21+0200, ran merge2out for s15pup32 and then went through the steps. Everything went flawlessly until 3builddistro got to downloading the huge kernel:

Code: Select all

Installing HUGE kernel to build/
wget: missing URL
Usage: wget [OPTION]... [URL]...

Try `wget --help' for more options.
Could not get kernel list

I suspect this is more of a WoofCE issue than anything else. So I downloaded https://sourceforge.net/projects/lxpup/ ... 32.tar.bz2. It was the latest there and proceeded. Ran perfect, no other error messages and I am posting from the build right now. Looks really good, will continue playing with it.

BTW, I notice that clicking OK on the scpup-hints screen didn't restart the window manager. Thanks for fixing that.

Cheers, J

Thanks @jrb I've added the kernel link to 00build.conf

@dimkr this is for local builds - does it mean ci builds will also use the kernel or will they use the latest kernel-build kernel??

I'm not sure I understand the question.

If I understand the logic in huge_kernel.sh correctly, it will try to download a kernel if nothing is found in kernel-kit/output. AFAIK nobody is maintaining https://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/huge_kernels so I wouldn't be surprised if this code path is broken. CI builds always place a kernel in kernel-kit/output, so they just skip a big amount of old code.

If you want to be sure you don't break anything, build and test before you merge.

until then we will wait
because we cannot tell when the developer thinks their distro is ready

am testing out S15Pup64, impressive overall. After enabling all the PPM repositories and updating the database, I am able to install gthumb-3.10.4. But I am unable to launch gthumb. No response from the menu, although I see gthumb listed. On the terminal I get an error

" root@d2 ~
--> gthumb

(gthumb:10731): GLib-GIO-ERROR **: 18:11:01.600: Settings schema 'org.gnome.desktop.background' is not installed
Trace/breakpoint trap
root@d2 ~
"

any fix for this problem?

Check if it is in:
/usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas

If it is run:

Code: Select all

glib-compile-schemas /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas

If it isn't you need to extract it from the gsettings-desktop-schemas package:

Hi peebee and everyone

I'm trying to learn to translate into Esperanto using MoManager. I decided to try this in S15Pups.

S15Pup32&64:
under Country Setup
Main Language has no option for Esperanto.
Keyboard Layout has epo Esperanto, and it works.
This is as far as I can get until eo_EO Esperantujo gets added to Country Setup, right? Is there an easy way to add that?
