OpenVPN Net Info & Geolocation

Post by mikeslr »

Edit: Unfortunately, this thread was started in response to a specific question --sort of in the middle of a discussion.
The "How to and Advice on Using VPN with Puppy Linux the first time" thread viewtopic.php?t=4736 provides really good information about setting up OpenVPN using OscarTalks' Application and even the VPN provider of your choice.

And see the next post about OpenVPN
-=-=-=-- continuation of original post -=-=-=--

Verify that your VPN is hooking you up correctly

jafadmin developed this, http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 33#1045733 and ETP recently packaged it as a pet for Fossapup64 at viewtopic.php?p=5224#p5224 from which it can be downloaded.

Seems to work fine under Bionicpup64. Worth trying under other Puppies.

Re:OpenVPN --OscarTalk's Simple Implementation

Post by mikeslr »

It's been a while since I've used these. So I don't know if they require updating. I was just surprised that that links to their threads on 'the old' forum didn't yet exist.

Edit 12-17-21: See OscarTalks' post here, viewtopic.php?p=44810#p44810. An examination of his Section on Smokey's repo --link below-- reveals that in addition to the pet for Xenialpup64 he has also updated a couple other versions.

Back in 2019, OscarTalks developed "A Simple VPN Implementation", the last version of which --AFAIK-- is available for many Puppy via the link from this post, https://oldforum.puppylinux.com/viewtop ... 4&start=30, Packages for many then current Puppys can be found here, http://smokey01.com/OscarTalks/. Look for the ones named 'vpn-onoff". Read the thread on which that post exists from the 1st thru the 3rd page. As I recall, all OscarTalks previous work --including openvpn modules-- are included in the vpn-onoff packages, but the earlier post provide instructions.
Later, d4rkn1ght, published VPN-Switch, https://oldforum.puppylinux.com/viewtop ... 6&t=118013
"I made this simple widget so I can have the two vpn-start and vpn-stop, password changing, and config files in a single place. I just wanted a simple GUI with all these shortcuts. I also added jafadmin Geolocation great script. 8)"

Re: Using Simple VPN Implementation with YOUR VPN

This might not work with whatever VPN server you use, but it's worth reading/trying: viewtopic.php?p=10891#p10891

Update Dec 19, 2021: The advice and instructions provided by OscarTalks and snoring_cat on this thread, viewtopic.php?p=44616#p44616 may be useful in configuring Puppys to make use of any VPN service that offers an opvn extension. Read in particular snoring_cat's post here, viewtopic.php?p=44897#p44897.

FYI, the provider being worked on there was surfshark. AFAIK, surfshark has a solid reputation while offering reasonable 'deals'. Today, it is offering an account for 24 Months @ $2.21 per month + 3 free months and 100% money-back guarantee for your first 30 days.

Just to note that on April 4, 2022 OscarTalks updated the VPN-ONOFF pets for most (all?) Mainstream Puppies. There are now pets for both 32-and-64 bit VanillaDpup. There's also one for EasyOS-dunfell. Link to current pets, http://www.smokey01.com/OscarTalks/
